Folio just announced a Great Gatsby restock. Good timing.

  • Whoa really?! Woot woot!

I must’ve missed it, been really busy working today. For a change
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • Looking forward to the restock of Foundation trilogy too. Just hope these aren’t printed and/or bound in China!

  • For those fans of Gideon, Alecto is now going to be the fourth book. Nona the Ninth is next.

Ooh, nice. I'll need to re-read Harrow, I read it too fast first time (like I tend to with books I really like) and can't remember much.

  • I liked it (nowhere near as much as Gideon, mind) but it was confusing as hell! I do rate Muir though - and she likes Disco Elysium so she must be a cool one.

Tolkien fans are going apeshit because a sampler of The Nature of Middle-Earth came out and it contains new details about how time works in the age of the magic trees that pre-dated the sun and moon. Their MINDS are BLOWN.

Just completed The Lord of the Rings. Just felt compelled to read it again. This was my 3rd reading. And I do discover new things each time. Tolkein's descriptions of landscapes, and in particular, how light falls on them are among the sweetest prose to read. I read this time noting the differences between the narrative path and what I remember of the films. It really is Jackson's miracle how it was adapted for the screen whilst retaining the feel of the book.

There are still passages that require further analysis, with references back to lore and clever hints at events in the parallel narrative streams and make it such a pleasure to re-read.

I read the Harper & Collins single volume illustrated version with art by Alan Lee and that really is a pleasure to read.  I still have to read my Folio version and that is a treat for some time in the future.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.

This is written by a pal, has been getting outrageously great reviews since it came out, and is going for 99p on Kindle today.

I’ve just bought it, some of you might fancy it too.

Started reading this a few days ago with no great hope that I'd like it - it's not really my kind of genre. However. I can't put it down. The main character is a bit of a pretentious dick, as are many of the supporting ones but it's a really, really fucking good read so far.

  • I still haven’t got around to it, but glad to hear it’s as good as folk say (and very glad I grabbed it while cheap).

Finally finished American Pastoral and what an absolute triumph of fiction. Wonderful.

What other Roth do peeps recommend?
  • The Way it Breaks by Polis Loizou.

This is about a Cypriot loser who starts working out, gets a new job, and becomes a gigalo. Not my usual read at all but the author was the only other boy in my A-Level English Lit class so I feel duty bound to try it out.

About half way through. It is very well written and I am quite enjoying it.

    ...

    Not enough monsters though.

Finished Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel.

That was a lot of book. And I'm not sure what I read. Seemed to be almost 800 pages of people irritating each other and have quibbles about it all the time. Very British I guess.

Must say that I did really enjoy it in the end. It's no Piranesi, but still very good, and very different.
    Spoiler:

Reading issue 4 of Berserk now (they're all checked out all the time so hard to get a hold of them through the library), and have The vanishing act of Esme Lennox ready for after that. My mom is reading that now and says she enjoys it. She recently finished Piranesi as well and enjoyed that, so only fair that I read something that she recommended after.

edit, Actually, now I think about it, Strange and Norrel is pretty much this forum when someone asks what biscuits are, or that one sausage that wasn't really a sausage, or when exactly tea happens and what you'll have during, or how to drink tea, but not during tea time.

Come with g if you want to live...
  • For those who liked Jonathan Strange, I would highly recommend The Night Circus by Erin Morginstern. I read this via a freebie from work last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Might get that when I'm done with current books.

from wikipedia about The Night Circus:
The Night Circus has been compared to Harry Potter and Twilight, as well as to Neil Gaiman, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

Hard to imagine what it'll be if it gets compared to both Harry Potter and Strange.
  • Wisdom of crowds arrived a couple of days ago. Just finished it. Demolished it because it’s brilliant as normal from Abercrombie. But also, just so dark, it’s really sad that
    Spoiler:

All in all though, very glad it seems to set up more books. Long may they continue.

  • Ooh, didn't realise that was out. Roll on pay day.

Started listening to my first ever audio book today. Thought I'd start in style with Bob Mortimers 'And Away...' which is predictably hilarious.

  • It is good, I was gonna re-read as I didn't fully engage with the first quarter, but got the audiobook instead. It's really well read by Chiwetel Ejiofor, would recommend to anyone with a spare Audible credit.

Yeah Piranesi and the Dr and Mr book are quite different. I bought my mom a copy of Piranesi and she loved it as well, it's not something she usually reads, but she messaged me after and said, "i'm not sure if I fully understand it, but I don't think it matters, as it's still beautiful".

    Love that book so much.
  • Was my birthday last week. Parents sent me vouchers for local bookstore. So ordered a bunch of stuff.

Made me feel the need to finish some stuff too.

Knocked off the antifa handbook by Mark bray. Just a fucking excellent read. Really well put together brief history of antifacism.

That got me back on the reading horse and I'm trying a new tactic of doing fiction and non fiction chapter at a time.

    Going well so far.

About 100 pages in to akala's natives. Brilliant.

Also do le guin's orsinia. Not as far into that and it's a bit of a brick, so TBA on it.

Have White rage, free lunch thinking (how economics ruins everything), and who gets to be smart from the vouchers.

Oh, and John safran's latest. Puff piece. About what tobacco companies are switching too.

Never mind the rest of the pile o shame. Hopefully this run of reading again hangs about for a while.
I'm still great and you still love it.

Tolkien book porn time! Got my super deluxe edition of The Lord of the Rings today which, for the first time ever, includes Tolkien’s own art. It’s beautiful. I don’t remember how much it was when I preordered it, but I ended up paying £110 for it, which is definitely the most I’ve ever paid for a single book. No regrets.
