I really enjoyed it at the cinema but I haven't been able to sit through a second viewing for some reason.

Same, keep dipping into it for 20mins or so but it doesn't really lend itself well to that. Just not been in the mood for a full watch.

It's definitely a one you need to plan for. But totally worth it. Get the bairns to bed, half draw the blinds so the shadows cut across your face, crack a whisky and enjoy.

They did the city with proper models, not some cgi shit, and that really comes across in the solidity of the place.
  • I love Blade Runner 2049. In my top 5 of the last decade for sure.

Just watched Scorsese's New York, New York and holy fucking hell, this is why you watch movies in the first place. There are very few original love stories, but this is one of them. Romantic in an entirely unusual and original way, very funny, strange and quite heartbreaking. De Niro and Minelli have incredible chemistry. If you like musicals, Scorsese or the two leads, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS MOVIE. La La Land borrowed a lot from it, and also reminded me of Woody Allen's brilliant Sweet and Lowdown for how it deals with Jazz. Brilliant, beautiful and entirely engaging. Two thumbs up, way up.

  • All new music, Vangelis not even involved in 2049. The original theme obviously comes in at one point.

Then it also perfectly captures the mood good sequel considering new lead new director and new score

Yup. Nailed the feel, just enough nods and call backs but it's still very much it's own thing. Continued to explore similar themes too. Could have been a right turkey but they did a great job.
  • And they extrapolated the clunky 80s tech perfectly

I think it's a perfect sequel. They couldn't have done any better.
  • It was a tiny bit
    Too long
I’d of done away with the cyber girlfriend plot
Line I’m not sure it added anything

The AI girlfriend thing further explored what it is to be human. Like if you can program an AI to think and react exactly as a human would in any given situation, what's the difference? And I loved the hierarchy where humans treat skinjobs like shit and they in turn look down on AI.
  • Well that explains a bit but then the weird hooker meld
Thing and then the bizarre naked billboard bit?

  • 2049 is brilliant. Rewatched it on iPad a few months back. Personally I wouldn’t change any of it at all.

  • Daddys Home 2 on channel 4 tonight. Its terrible of course but I really enjoyed it. Laughed plenty and was good to see Mel Gibson playing his asshole self really well.
Not everything is The Best or Shit. Theres many levels between that, lets just enjoy stuff.
  • I watched Casino Royale on the tellybox tonight. Haven't seen it before.
I guess back when it came out in 2006 it was seen as a sort of edgy reboot of the Bond franchise, but fuck me it's a hot mess. Terrible stuff even by Bond standards. I gather the next one is meant to be even worse, so that must be quite something.

  • I haven’t even seen Sceptre yet. Or whatever it’s called. Is that what it’s called, the most recent one?

  • Spectre. Aye it was pish too, but at least a bit more watchable than Casino Royale. I'm beginning to suspect that they have some sort of primitive AI program that generates the scripts now, because the writing is laughable.

  • The writing has always been laughable in Bond movies, problem with the Craig era ones is they are trying to be actual serious movies.

When Bond was wearing a safari suit or dressed as an Asian stereotype no one noticed the script.
  • Aye, Connery got a way with a few gems because of the period they were made and set in, and Moore was just camp schlock, but they've really struggled to try and make them actual serious stories. I generally spend most of the time either groaning or just scratching my head, and they seem to go on for ever. I swear to God I just watch Bond play fucking kerds for at least four hours there.

  • I honestly think the best thing they can do is move Bond to a period setting.
Too many other movies are doing the modern action spy thing better.

Your thinking of quantum of solace
    The Forum Herald™
  • Aye, that's the one. I gather it's meant to be the worst of the Craig Bonds.

Couldn't agree more. Not doing that was a real missed opportunity when they rebooted the franchise with Craig.

  • Solace was terrible. I actually like Casino Royale.

  • Yeah, I'd heard it was meant to be pretty good, so I was surprised by how much I hated it.

Is quantum of solice the one with the random hotel in the desert at the end? That one was shit.

I liked Javier Bardem in the other one, but the story was a contrived mess.

    Me
    Too.

    In retrospect it’s over long
And there’s too much ford product placement and the relationship with moped isn’t really given long enough
To be believed and card games just aren’t exciting but the film still holds up

I’d say the opening parkour chase actually hasn’t been beaten in terms of movie set piece.

Most Bond films are fairly bad but Quantum of Solace really does take the biscuit. Totally nonsensical gibberish. I got free tickets to see it and even then I felt ripped off.

Yeah Solace was total shite. Of the new ones Skyfall is my favourite. I like the action but also like Javier as the weird bad guy. Plays it really hammed up but he was obviously having fun with the part.
  • I cant tell any of the Craig movies apart.

Oh God! I've seen that! Must have blanked it from my memory. Christ, what a stinking turd of a film that was.
