What a great game.  Level 5 & Ghibli, partnership made in heaven.

    Will write more later.
  • I've just got the last few errands and hunts to do, but didn't get a chance tonight. Will be Sunday at earliest now.

70 odd hours flew by and made me actually remember that there may yet be a reason to get one of these next gen jobbies. Good games is good games innit.

Those hours passed in what seemed a blink.  I got a few gripes, not on the levels that Kow is facing(the same as Matty, it didn't really effect me in game either), just a few minor ones, that like I said before, I am just being a bit picky/needy.  Will cover them off when I get the time to bang out a larger post.

Looking forward to mopping shit up on the post game, but gonna park it for a while as I have Metal Gear Revengeance, MGS3 3DS & Virtues Last Reward to try & get done before Monster Hunter & Fire Emblem land.

I would recommend seeing the Horace story through before the final curtain though peeps.

I still have no idea who Horace is, 35 hours in. Am i doing it wrong?
  • No you are not doing it wrong Ace.  I found very him early in game, but didn't finish his story arc till the 50ish hour mark(as I forgot about him).  He is just tucked away.

Spoiler below tells which city to start in, but not his location.  Head over to....

  • I'm right at the very end - I was a little fucked off at the *third* evolution of the final boss, as I'd put the pad down at that point thinking it was all over only to be wiped out in about 30 seconds. I'll probably finish it off at the weekend.
  • Just finished - only the second JRPG I have played to the end (the other being FF7), so big ups to it.
Fantastic game only slightly let down by the battles and in particular the ai for the other team members.

  • I finished it last night too, made a conscious choice to do so even though I could spend hours levelling familiars to create the 'best' team.

I really enjoyed it from start to finish, even though there were a few things that annoyed. One being that the text seemed to be aimed at a younger audience, which meant that I had worked out what someone was saying but had to sit through another few boxes of talking while they explained it fully, whereas the combat, world, tactics and themes seemed to be more adult orientated. This was a bit grating.

Also there were lots of cut scenes with just text where I wish they were spoken, it actually seemed really light on vocals overall.

Graphics were amazing throughout, even though the proper Ghibli cutscenes weren't that numerous. It was also pretty funny and genuinly touching.

Highly recommended to JRPG fans, those who don't like the genre probably won't be swayed.

Probably my biggest gripe(me being needy) with the game.  In the age of Blu I expected a tad more.  As well as the cut scenes with just text, the one or two spoken word ones irked a tad more, the odd "oh" from drippy didn't really cut it for me.  Localisation & the amount of story & side quests in the game probably didn't help, but at times it didn't feel that huge a leap from DQ8.  I expected a Ghibli cutscene at the end aswell.  My gripes though are just drops in the ocean when I take the whole thing in to account & the game was easily worth top dolla, just wish I managed to nab a wizard edition as that book looks f'in sweet & my youngest girl would of loved the Drippy plush.
  • Yeah, you'd have this big animated scene and then it's just one 'oh!' from a character.

Wizard's edition, I could sell you mine? Obviously I've opened it and used the codes, but the Drippy is still in his bag and I think I opened the book once.

Edit - I could keep my copy of the game, and just send you the box with Drippy and the book. Drop me a PM if you like.

  • Legend Matty, PM sent.
  • This hasn't grabbed me in the way I'd hoped it would. Not really feeling a desire to return at the moment. Really don't like the battle system, maybe that's it.
  • Played a few sessions but only level 10 so far.  Really enjoying it.  Characters, visuals, music are all lovely.

Only gripe is some of the English subs don't really match the Japanese VO, I don't mean just grammar, I mean things like a difference in attitude that changes a character.  Drippy is quite a cheeky chappy but many of his Japanese VO lines don't reflect that.

I guess it's not really a gripe, just a difference they thought was worth making, and he's a fun character either way so it's all good.
Today is the shadow of tomorrow.

I wonder if the lack-of-voices thing is a hangover from it originally being a DS game or something? Perhaps bits of the DS version was voiced a bit like the Professor Layton games and they've just reused that.

  • I agree Chaz, game length was pretty spot on.

I have a few things post game still to do, but with Monster Hunter landing this week, Kuni will be heading to the pile & feck knows when I will head back in.

I am halfway through the conductor quest with no major problems so far. Still must be missing a few alchemy as the old boy is still telling me I ain't ready for his skills.  The trails I just have s rank left to do but a certain young...
