A lot of his advice is about how to avoid over paying on interest etc. Clearly if you have no debt then that's not relevant to you, but it is to plenty of poor people. This is an odd hill.

My sister's on around £30k and I lent her money to clear her overdraft to level herself up. Besides a Credit Union loan (which I've had in the past), I'm unaware of anything Lewis would've recommended for someone in that situ without a credit card?

Definitely a hill I'm walking down slowly, mind! Covid's made us miserable and cranky and I was just having a random pop at his TV style (maybe it was the format and not him...), not wanting to argue in detail about his advisory worth (and I suspect his forum's really good). Same goes for everything else I've written, which is all just me explaining, as best I can, why I feel the way I do about certain things.

I'm not criticising anyone for not sharing my views. It's human nature to reject views we disagree with, sure, but our noses only get out of joint when we try forcing ours on others. I'm not doing that, but apologise if it seems like it. Likewise, don't dunk on me for not being a staunch remainer, yo? I'll chill in this thread now and let it return to some happier fish chat.

Socialism's hugely important to me, but I've seen enough to know local campaigning's futile and decided to dodge more upset next GE. The UK isn't ready; might never be. And re: Brexit, I'm not gonna fall out with IRL friends over it. Family members seriously falling out... man, that's intolerance right there.
  • Switch current account to a 0% overdraft.
Or consolidate debts into a loan with a lower APR.
  • I still am pretty sure that you don't understand what his balance transfer advice is about. Hint, it's specifically credit card debt.

So the answer to your question is, what is the debt they owe?

Yeah, I don't know NatWest's APR* but I'm guessing ludicrous. Probably not hard to find a better loan.

It's worth saying that I and several of my friends can't get loans from anywhere but our CU. Absolute lifesaver, that.

    *Looks like 39.49%.

On the rare occasions I buy something in an upmarket shop I feel self-conscious about paying with my prole Debit card.

Dude going into fancy places and paying on your debit card is the real flex, it's like POW I have the actual funds in my account for this right now, no putting it off until payday for me yo!

Do you think all the people working on the tills probsbly getting near minimum wage are going to be actually impressed if lord of the manor turns up and whips out a black card? Funniest shit I ever saw like that was when I had a part time job in Thornton's when I was at college and this dude in his camel coat comes in, piles up a load of the massive boxes on the checkout and then his dickhead platinum whatever card wouldn't go through. It was amazing, he was all like "I've brought cars on this card!" Patricia on the till just quipped "That's probably why there's not enough left to buy these then." Legendary shelling, probably the single best bit of my time working in retail.

  • I think it’s useful in a political forum thread to be able to recognise the difference between people “forcing opinions” and being unable to accept differing views, and, erm, pointing out errors or arguing with one’s opinions

Don’t want you to leave thread escape. Thought we’d found common ground with that UN report. Wanted to focus on how leave /=/ difference to that however
  • Actually don’t want to focus on that because it’s done, innit?

    What next
  • EU not covering themselves in glory with the vaccine.
  • They don't like it up 'em!
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • No they are not. I mean what they’re doing is attempting to protect their interests and their citizens, which is to be expected - but the Irish border thing was a real mistake and the rapid embarrassing u-turn shows they know it
  • Only the UK is allowed to embarrass itself on the world stage over the Irish border. British borders for British diplomatic cock-ups!
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • At least the EU climbed down after realising their mistake. We're 4+ years into doubling down on ours.
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • They have handled their vaccine project exceptionally poorly.
  • I held out for a good amount of time thinking we MUST be the dick in this, we are always the dick in everything.
Nope EU really are in full panic mode here.
  • Yuh. So what does this mean for all that criticism Kate Bingham, vaccine tsar, took for spending the PR money for roll-out marketing / approach...
  • She did a great job, credit where credit is due.
  • I mean, the UK had to get one right eventually. We were well overdue
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
  • Haaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
  • It's a big one to get right, fair play
  • Sorry but why does this make spending all that money on PR right? Also has it been a success? Or is it just a success in comparison to the shit job the EU have done?

Compared to almost anywhere else in the world the UK is doing a good job of vaccinations.

So we are actually soloing to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership? As in that's not a joke hit in the heels of Brexit?

What a time to be alive...

We're going to try. It's a back door attempt to get a free trade deal with the US as far as I can tell.
  • Compared to almost anywhere else in the world the UK is doing a good job of vaccinations.

And some of that could be chalked up to good campaigning and marketing tools.

I mean it’s hardly unqualified: just read some of Tin’s posts on the matter, they are various and scary and infuriating. And then there’s the as yet unproven case for delaying second doses in order to get as many first doses done as soon as possible, and the mixing of vaccines (is this still the plan Tin?).

But just like some of us give credit to Blair and Brown for a minimum wage, you gotta give credit for successes, at least to date; because if you blame ministers for failures then they deserve credit for success.
