I think it will tend to grow out of your face regardless of which way you comb it. I grow significant beardage now and then but I've never felt the need to comb, brush, trim or otherwise style/treat it in any manner whatsoever.
I've started combing/brushing mine daily over the last couple of months, it's noticeabley softer and neater now. I'd really recommend getting some beard oil for semi regular use or even spray in hair conditioner. I use that Aussie brand, few blasts while I brush my teeth in the morning and then comb it through a few minutes later.
A second vote for Kent brushes also, they're really worth it.

My argument for combing my beard, as there's always some cunt going "omg you actually have a comb for that lololol", is if I had this amount of hair on the top of my head, I'd be ridiculed for not combing or brushing it, so shut your goddamn mouth you fuck. Plus my hair is naturally curly, and tangles very easily down there. I mean up here down there, not down down there.
First date in ten years tomorrow, finally got to the barbers after 3 months growth. Serious reshape, less on the sides, tried to keep the length on the chin. Fingers crossed she digs it.
