Work - The pros and the cons...
  • Im not a fan either, I am alright face to face but I struggle with cover letters and written pitches.

Although I think I went the other way and was perhaps a bit OTT in a cover letter the other day.
Really fancied the job (which is saying something as Im not really interested in a perm role). It was at Kompan, designing and visualising play parks. Not heard anything yet but I am definitely qualified for it.
  • Tone is so difficult. Struggle to get past receptionists and PAs, but no one ever replies to cold call emails. Frustrating.

And the other thing. I keep being told I'm "over qualified" for some of the freelance jobs I'm applying for through agencies. Assuming what they really mean is "more expensive than we'd like".

Noticed that the average wage for an experienced designer has dropped to c.25K, which is mentally low for the hours, responsibility and stress involved. Wonder if it's a sign of a flooded market. Also noticing high turnover, with the same companies advertising the same roles every 6 months or so. Never a good sign...

  • I hit the £25k barrier and was a big reason I went freelance.
I know Graphic Designers, Furniture Designers, Interior designers, Architects, Editors, Producers, other visualisers, artworkers all hitting the £25k wall. Every single one of them began their career during or after the 2008 crash.
  • I was north, just below 25K until just after the crash. Moved south but nothing doing over 28K, and then they want blood and 70 hours a week salaried for that. Madness.

Industry seems to be in a weird place at the moment.

  • Yeah, I was on 25k in London and expected to work silly hours, as well as train a junior and be in charge of the photocopier. Fuck that.
I think there are quite a few shit studios out there, the ones who made it during the good times so think they are amazing. Now they survive by under cutting and devaluing the industry as a whole. Of course the directors don't want to absorb those losses so salaries are held back instead.
  • Tell me about it. Last place I was at, ceiling for senior designers was 28K. Account Execs started on 55K and Directors were on 100K+ (and both got bettter working hours and flexible time which designers weren't allowed).

Industry needs a full on revolution, it's in an absolute mess.

Also, I need to stop ranting.

  • I had no idea the money was so bad in design. That's a real eye opener chaps.
Come with g if you want to live...
  • Im fine with the ranting, i totally agree with you.

There is a shit attitude that runs through the design industry (games as well) where working long hours carries a badge of honour. People talk about 3am finishes like they are war stories.
Of course there always has to be an element of flexibility in hours when working in a creative way but if people are putting in hours and hours for free then at some point the studio has failed, be it costing, planning, ability or resource.
  • A handful are on good money, but usually unless you make Art Director or Creative Director, you'll struggle to break 30K.

As positions are salaried, hour demands are usually at least 50-60+ hours p/week too. And office politics are rife.

Whole skillset of designers is undervalued by most companies. And we have to be designers, illlustrators, copywriters, animators, video editors, coders and UX experts. It's crazy.

Read an ad today where they wanted full creative suite skills including motion graphics and video, web ux, copywriting, marketing and 6 years min agency experience for 22K salaried. That kind of thing is getting more and more common too. Utterly rubbish. Would definitely not recommend this industry to newbies.

    Edit: what @live said.

  • The trouble with ads like that is they are going to get an incompetent boob. Probably someone desperate who just says they can do it to get a foot in the door.
Recruiters should be questioning that but lets not get started on recruiters.

If i was to encourage newbies I would say learn some coding to back you up. HTML5 or C++ or whatever, If they want to do 3D then learn character rigging.
Main thing I would say is DON'T WORK FOR FREE!!!
  • Design recruitment agencies are feckless, clueless, morally ambiguous asshats that barely come second to estate agents in the 'first against the wall when the revolution comes' stakes.

Not that I have strong feelings on the matter.

  • I'm in the same position chaps. I'm a designer/artworker but I specialise in motion graphics. I look at the job ads daily because it feels easier to jump in salary by changing jobs than it is to progress year on year. I live South of London and the amount of employers looking for juniors is ridiculous.

The best ad I've seen in a long time popped up the other day. A local t-shirt printing company advertising for designers...they were asking for a mix of graphics and typography, great way to freely create designs etc. I kid you not, this place was offering £10 per design...no royalties or add ons.

    I emailed them my thoughts.
  • Would be good to see your stuff Mike (and Jaco).
I dabble in motion graphics but its really basic stuff.
  • My non-NDA restricted stuff is on my website: www.mrjalco.co.uk

These days 90% of my work is under NDA though. *sadface*

@mike that's rubbish, and entirely expected. Design really is undervalued at the moment.

  • I feel that pain.
Some lovely stuff on your site though, i would order everything off that Biltong menu!
I like the Calvin like theme.
  • Cheers man. The biltong project was one of those rare projects where I got free rein on the design and the copywriting.

  • They are the ones that always come out the best. Funny that, letting a designer design, who would have thought?
  • I've been design/artworker/running a studio/now a freelancer for 16 years. It's a young persons game, there's  always a raft of new guys who thinks it's exciting who will work for peanuts for the experience.
I'm currently freelancing for two completely different places, i don't actively look for more and i think I'm done if the work from these places dries up.
Fuck knows what i will do as an alternative career though.

  • @pantyfire loads of designers in that position mate. Problem is you could run into IR35 issues with HMRC too, unless you're limited or working through an umbrella company. Considering how many folk work freelance now, the government have made it much harder than it needs to be.

  • Dream job fail :(

Got some really nice feedback... was between me and another person, but they just felt that their current projects suited someone with more end to end film making experience. My showreel sells my motion graphics and editing skills rather than my in camera bits (which admittedly is lacking).

Was disappointed earlier, but there will be more opportunities like this I'm sure.
  • Unlucky dude, at least you were in the final two. Just use the feedback to your advantage for next time.
  • Sorry Mike. It's obviously not right for you. The right thing will come along though!

  • Bad luck mike. Sounds like positive feedback though to improve for the next time round.
  • Unlucky Mike.
At least you got some good feedback though, you now know what to work on, along with the confidence that comes with knowing the other stuff was strong.
  • Cheers for the support chaps. Just got to wait for the next opportunity.

Unlucky mate, onto the next application. They knew what they were looking for and you've admitted it was something you lacked, despite that you still got to the final two, cracking good work man, honestly take that and run with it

  • My job is officially 9am - 9pm, although in reality I don't finish until 9 30 and anything after 9pm is unpaid. This is annoying, but recently my boss has said he'd like me to start arriving at 8 45 too as this is when one of the barbers arrive and he doesnt like waiting in the cold for me to arrive with the key. Again this extra 15 mins is unpaid.

In the last 10 days my bus has been late twice, and this has resulted in me arriving at- literally- 8 46 and 8 47. On both occasions this barber has complained to the boss at at 8 45 sharp that he cant get in. So now my boss wants me to arrive at 8 30 so that even if my bus is late I still arrive on time. again this is unpaid.

I'm so fucked off about this. Nothing I can do about it but I wanted to vent.

There is something you can and should do: quit, that's entirely unreasonable.
  • Apart from the unpaid bits at the start and and end, it's actually quite a nice job. Further, the alternative for me is going to be sales or kitchen work, both of which I hate more than an unpaid hour each day.
