If you have any experience as a middle man I would definitely mention it. Experience as a buyer, recruiter, project managing or even experience of communicating in between management and workforce such as assistant management.
From the sounds of it you will be talking to centre managers as well as potential and existing lease holders so strong and clear communications skills will be something they will be after.

Moving on. Got an interview this Tuesday. Its for a 'regional commercialisation manager', covering west/central Scotland. I had no clue what it was either. Basically, shopping centres have those wee pop up businesses, like eyebrow threaders and mobile phone accessory stands etc; rather than sourcing those businesses themselves, they sub it out to this company and they supply and manage the contracts for them. So, my job, if I get it, will be that. Spoke with the company's chief operations guy who's handling the recruitment. He likes me and one other guy, who comes from within that industry. He likes me because I've got more hands on operational experience, across a couple different industries. He says he's looking for a personality rather than a wealth of specific industry experience; says he's happy to train the right person up. He (and the advert) hardly mentioned sales at all, which appeals to me, I'd far rather work for a set salary than scrabble about for commission and have a different wage every month. However, this interview is with the company's CFO/head of sales, so there must be some focus on it. If I'm honest, I don't think I've got a snowball's chance of getting it; but I'll still give it a go. Going to try and talk about my experience running different concessions in different locations, also got a couple of ideas about sourcing new vendors - where to find them, what ones I'd put in what location, making them complimentary to existing shops within the centre etc. A mate runs a wedding directory that's full of small businesses that sell bespoke handmade shit, I can get access to that. There's also due to be a new cinema opening in one of their centres this year, I currently work for their biggest competitor, so that goes in my favour (according to the chief operations guy). Looking for any suggestions from you all that might give me something useful to say in this interview. I'm starting to really want this job; more responsibility and autonomy, get my nights back, potentially a company car, and it opens doors to other industries (which is why I moved from gambling into cinema, so this is kinda part of my long term plans). Also, Mrs bawjaws is desperate to have a kid this year. I'm keen as well, but I'm really unhappy with my current job, so I want to change before we start breeding. Honestly, I'm worried I'd feel obliged to stay in this job if she falls pregnant, and I'll end up resenting her and the kid. Anyhoo, thanks for reading and any suggestions. Oh, and apologies for the length of the post!
    Just be yourself mate.

    Yes you are

I know a few guys who made money from the pop up spots, but managing them must be a terribly hard job, just because of how often they move

So be eyes open about the job you are taking, and that's pretty much all I can offer, I'm getting offers left right and centre at the minute but only a few are above my previous ceiling, so I'd rather finish this project and take the boost to ego and cv it involves

Try and plan a few steps ahead and be realistic about it

I may have found a route away from the inbox at work. I'm being told that I have a good eye for products, so a product manager job may be a potential next step. I'll have to see what comes up.

The apps, the website, the membership proposition, I think the contributions section, possibly things like our internal tools as well, but I couldn't swear to that.

Not a chance, it's worse than Kendall, you'll never get London Mint Cake

Hate the disparity, if I could earn my wage and work in a area as cheap as Derby I'd be a happy man

That wage disparity is obviously present only here, but far more noticeable when you look across Europe as a whole

    OK, interesting.
I have a mate that heads up a sales team for digital media space on an app. He has explained the model to me a hundred times and it I still only half get it.

Nothing happening yet, but the mere fact of a potential route forward into something new is a positive. One of the guys I work with has been doing that job for a decade now. If I thought I'd still be answering the same emails in ten years, that would be quite depressing. Equally, most of the people in the department are computer science grads and developers, so it was hard to see a way forward aside from learning how to programme, which is quite a time investment.

Yep, project managed a major part of a 6m refurb in here through the summer, liaising with contractors, suppliers etc. Mitigating impact of said refurb, proactive planning for maintenance etc, and risk assessments, all that jive.

Can blab on about effective communication, building and maintaining good relationships with external suppliers, staff etc. The final interview is with st Enoch centre management, the contract is based there 3 days of the week. Don't think they'll have the final say so in who gets the job, but they'll at least have input.

Desperately trying not to get my hopes up. Made that mistake with pets at home, then they pissed on my chips.

I've got a mate commuting from Derby, and I was tempted to do the same, given I work above Clapham Junction it's one of the easiest places to get to, and yet I'd still be looking at around 10k a year for a ticket and about 2.5 hours each way

Commute from Manchester?? Madness mate, unless you're in a role where working from the train is both possible and productive and you really only need to be in the office for meetings, then a commute of that length is crazy. Could always use a crash pad or rent somewhere mon-fri but given the costs involved you'd be better off moving

    Bleugh.
  • And yes I'm sure plenty of badgers work longer ours than me. But as a new dad who moved jobs, key stages, is new to year 2 assessment, is new to slt, and has been observed 4 times in the last two weeks, I'm turning into a shade.

Aaah, phew, given how single minded you can be about things I really thought you might be considering it. I seriously chewed it over for a few months, even with the £10k train ticket I'd still save around £3k, just decided the it wasn't worth it in the end

edit: @dante, tabbed browsing and then going for lunch
