How to prepare for a generic interview. Like I said, I've had probably 2 interviews in 20 years. I'm not particularly sure what to expect.
  • I hadn't heard of Star as a thing before but know of the process.

I would suggest thinking of examples to answer Star based on the various elements the job would involve. So if you are managing people have a Star answer for that, if you are meeting third parties like clients or suppliers have an answer for that.

In general. Do your research on the employer and the role. Have a question to ask at the end even if you couldn't give two shits about the answer.
Relax, be yourself and remember a good interview should also be about you working out if the position is right as much as you being right for the position.

    What about hugs?

Happy to help - I’ve done a lot of recruitment. What in particular do you want to know?

Which interviewers face should he belch in first?
  • Only bear hugs.
A firm bear hug shows commitment to the position. Never go in with a limp hug.

Got a new role within the company - Assistant Team Manager.

Off the phones, doing escalations, floor walking, HR and other management shit. Start on Monday, can't wait.

Read the JD and understand clearly what will be expected of you when/if you’re doing the job. Now think of past examples of situations that you’ve experienced that are relevant. Perhaps you’ve had to manage a project, or discipline a staff member, or look after a budget. For each of those situations, you’re going to be asked a question that will start with something like - “tell me about a time when you’ve x”

When answering, you’re going to want to briefly explain the context - where you worked and your role, then explain the situation, and what problem or circumstance was important. Then talk about what you did - your role is important. Don’t say ‘we’. If there was a ‘we’, highlight your part of the team and why it was significant. Then set out what you achieved.

Lastly, for a bonus, where it makes sense to, perhaps reflect on it - say if you’d done something differently and why, or mention that you still do that sort of thing today. Showing that you’ve learnt or developed from the example is relatable.

Happy to help if you need anything else.

Cheers mate. I'll do some prep and give you a shout if I start stressing out over something.
  • Top advice from Syph there.

STAR method...done that a few times myself. Take examples in with you written down that you can refer to. Just headline it:
Situation - needed to save 20% costs
    Task - meet with suppliers
    Actions - led negotiations etc
Result - achieved the 20% saving to the contract etc

Defo have a backup example for each area/competency that they're asking for.

  • Cheers mate. I'll do some prep and give you a shout if I start stressing out over something.

Also don’t think it’s the end of the world if you don’t have a perfect example, or if you haven’t been in the situation they’re looking for. If that happens, your job is to make another example relevant, or say what you would do if you were faced with that situation - by using a methodology/approach you’ve used in the past.

Other tips - take a pen and paper in with you, or a notebook. Write down the key words from the question, not all of it, and take at least 10-30 seconds to think your answer through. Think about why you’re being asked the question - what do they want to hear. Put the pen down, look the person who asked the question in the eye and give your response. I’ve done this for every interview since I started going for senior roles.

Also, never lead with a negative. You wouldn’t say, “that’s an area of weakness for me” and then answer the question as best you can. Just give your best answer and focus on the positives. The last time I didn’t get a big role (around 4 years ago), that was the only feedback I got, and it was the difference between getting the job and not.

    Best of luck.

  • STAR is just a way of organizing your answer so that you
    A. Cover all the required details
    B. Answer in a way that can be understood and followed.

Have you ever had to deal with a dispute between colleagues?

Situation: Yes, when I worked in brothel two of the girls would often fight
Task: I needed to resolve the conflict and create a harmonious knocking shop.
Action: I spoke to each girl individually to get their honest feeling, advised them on how to be more patient with each other and had a meeting with both of them in attendance. I explained what I needed and expected from both of them, it was tough but we managed to get through it.
Result: The division was healed and we all became friends and had sex.

  • Oh yeah what I actually came to post:

My brother was here and we were chatting about the Spotify year in review. I don't have the email but he does.
    I check my spam.
A company director had been emailing me about job opertunities through November.

A friend had given my CV in and I assumed I got out in the forget pile.

I wasn't but Gmail has fucked me right over.

Apology email sent now but I'm mortified. Also my friend vouched for me and I must have come off as pig ignorant.
    Just bad all round.

I'm sure the director understand about spam folders
"I spent years thinking Yorke was legit Downs-ish disabled and could only achieve lucidity through song" - Mr B
  • Yeah, in that situation I would maybe even turn it into a positive by using it as a reason to phone the company director.

Call them up and apologise for the non-reply, explain about the spam folder incident and ask whether it happens often – do they have a problem with the kind of email address or subject headings they are using? Make it something to joke about – ‘Typical isn’t it? Adverts about Viagra get through the spam filter but genuine job offers don’t!’

It could be an opportunity to have them think of you as an actual person, not just an email contact.
  • I tend to avoid the subject of viagra when trying for a new job.
  • I was exaggerating for (admittedly limited) comic effect.
  • Plot twist:

Kneecap’s mate was told by the boss, in confidence, that he has issues with erectile disfunction - boss thinks matey spilled the beans, mate gets fired, kneecap still doesn’t get the job.
