They wouldn't be edge cases if your policy was to accept returns without proof of purchase.

Didn't say that, never said that

I said no receipt, no return was bollocks. I said there are other ways to prove a purchase, I said that the store (being as it's obliged to record every transaction) are better placed to find this proof. I said I hated this presumption that every cunt was on the make

  • What if the staff are in on it?
What if they are intimidated into it having no sure policy to fall back on?

How can you expect green 16 years to take on that responsibility and why should they for the piss money retail provides?

It seems far simply to me to have a hard line. No proof of purchase, no refund.
If people cant keep hold of receipts or provide other proof that is on them.

If it is faulty then a replacement or store credit to get an alternative is more than reasonable.

What record would the store have if you paid cash?

edit: You don't have to have spent 3 years as the primary data and bi specialist for the third largest formalwear retailer in the country to know that's possible, but for any avoidance of doubt I was

  • Good point, I ended up stopping a major ring from 3 stores who figured out you could put 5-10k on a gift card, then force quit the POS to home screen. It would restart the app from a clear screen, but the credit would stay loaded to the gift card. I had thousands spent in a week on gift cards (which barely anyone would use usually). There was about £200k of it happening in different stores over a couple of months, and had been happening on and off for years. All related to organised crime, obvs.

    Edit: @livdiv

The way I found out btw was tracing back the gift card number to where it came from, and found no previous transaction/receipts attached, to any of them.

That's the issue, any loophole that can be exploited will be to the max by organised crime.

Just like an exploit in a game, it gets rinsed as soon as it's discovered.
  • @Cosmic
We had a manager on the Audio and TV department that would pull up old orders that had been delivered. Change the card details to his own then have a junior member of staff return the items through the till saying they had already been put back in the warehouse.
He got caught because accounts flagged so many TVs being returned onto one card.

Really the till staff should have been more diligent in seeing the actual card if they had done so they would have seen his name on it. They didnt get reprimanded they were just kids and JL are pretty good.

    The guy went to prison.

The customer has to be able to give the details to be able to locate that purchase though.  99% of returns are with a receipt, because it's by far the easiest way to give proof of purchase. By need a receipt, cosmic meant proof of purchase, because it's a reasonable shorthand to use in this circumstance.

You tend to find that people who don't have a receipt when trying to return something can't tell you what day or time it was, and in many cases, how they paid.
  • I'm not sure if I ever had anyone kick off because they didnt have a receipt.
It was more common that someone with a receipt took it as carte balance to return any piece of shit regardless of the condition it was in.

We had some woman try to return a sheep skin rug that looked like chewbacca's verruca, but she had a receipt so thought it was fine.

I’m sorry, but I don’t like this attitude. Same when you see customers in closing down sales branded as ‘vultures’. Customers don’t have an obligation to keep businesses afloat, and the whole point of discounts in closing down sales is to attract a pile of custom that wouldn’t otherwise exist, to recoup some losses.

I’m sorry, but I don’t like this attitude, either. I know you love riffing on your Citizen Smith vibe, but you’re supposed to be a grown up, take some fucking responsibility for yourself for crying out loud.

No it seems you like to riff on it. Do i keep receipts, not for anything but the most major of purchases. Does that mean I've been unable to work with retail staff to find transactions that need reversing in the past?? No it doesn't, on the few occasions I've purchased something faulty I've managed to get things fixed. I'm not talking about buyers remorse, though many of the examples given are exactly that, and there's no obligation for the retailer to entertain such frivolous bullshit either

Taking responsibility was the actual exact point I was making in my posts, that we should afford people a certain level of respect, not assume that every return is someone trying to launder £25 by going to the effort of slightly bleaching a t-shirt. Which we can do by not presuming guilt before any interaction, but hey if you like the Citizen Smith vibe, then shuld I ask if that part is what you might have a problem with

    What we’re they fired for?

Being utterly useless, and shagging a team manager

  • Is making the sex a sackable offence at your gag?
  • Maybe they did it over the manager’s desk, while colleagues were still trying to answer calls.
