That's pretty much a semantically empty phrase - rundown the list of characteristics for if it's "woo" or not:  https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Woo

If you discount the uap stuff that is usa made secret planes/drones or back engineered whatever etc. Then most of the people who spend their time looking at this stuff for a living seem to come to the same conclusion, consciousness is somehow involved in the phenomena but no-one is sure how or why.
Well, the consciousness of the experiencer is often a primary factor in *all* reports of anything - it's why we discount testimony from known liars, people with psychosis or someone who was on drugs at the time etc.
Just being in a "spooky" environment puts your mind/consciousness into a susceptible state based on belief-network expectations built up by the years of ghost stories/films etc. - there's not many supernatural phenomena happening in broad daylight down the Tescos.

Likewise, mass events can teach us a lot about group dynamics, "mass hysteria" and the power of simple narrative.
  • BTW, Mick West is a co-founder of Neversoft, core programmer on the first 5 THPS, Guitar Hero etc. and seems like nowadays spends a bunch of his time debunking ufo and conspiracy stuff - e.g. :  https://www.metabunk.org/threads/go-fast-footage-from-tom-delonges-to-the-stars-academy-bird-balloon.9569/

i.e. the old "is it small, close and moving at a normal speed, or is it large, distant and moving incredibly fast?" nugget, not helped by fast-moving, zoomed camera and parallax.

If it's just birds and weather balloons, I'd hope the Pentagon would just say as much.

  • Why would the Pentagon spend any time commenting on UFO videos for the general public? I'm sure they've got much more important things to do.

Quite, but they did officially release those after investigation and still found them to be unexplained.

  • Lots of things are unexplained, it's why science is still happening.
  • No, we will have completed science after this coronavirus thing.

What is the provenance for this text? What is your source? Is it a UFO website? How do you know that this is legitimately as response from the Navy?

Not true, as stated in both (A6) and (A8) in Dino's linked text (which we are currently *presuming* is from a Navy representative). They may have an explanation, they just aren't telling you, and aren't going to tell you.

That really should be a red flag for someone who has motivated reasoning. There's an entire industry dependent around unexplained things remaining mysterious and unexplained, so that there are still things for them to investigate and ways to sell books, seminars and reap ad revenue from websites.

If they were paid on commission for the things that they *did* explain adequately, then I'd be more interested in what they have to say.

    From the Pentagon press release.

The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as "unidentified."

Unexplained, unknown or whatever similar adjective, they are saying they're mysterious, let's not spit hairs ;)

The phenomenon of the bulk of an online community trying and failing for years to sway a conspiracy theory adherent back to reality is the true mystery here

The reality is: There are hypersonic objects which have been tracked, video captured and eye witnessed by elite pilots. People can deny this all day long if it makes them feel uncomfortable.

This does wind me up a bit I must admit. There are officially released statements and videos etc. At the very least the reasoning behind making these public is intriguing.

... other than that some of the examples aren’t actually hypersonic.

I don't think anyone is denying that there are unusual (as in the viewers have no immediate explanation) things being caught by instruments, seen or whatever. Maybe they're Marian apparition? Sky spirits? Magic warfare between sorcerers? God? Fairies?

Is the aliens option more realistic? Should we take it more seriously?
  • "The reality is:" that there's completely ordinary explanations for all the videos being put forward as evidence of "advanced craft beyond human manufacturing capabilities", and they all hinge on the data being misinterpreted. But sensible explanations don't get you hits on your blog or youtube subscribers in this day and age, and certainly won't get you paid speaking slots at the latest UFOCon. "jET fUel CANT MELT stTEEL" seems to sell with a certain population, because it appeals to a desire to have secret/hidden knowledge - the famous "I Want To Believe".
There are real conspiracies out there, but more often than not they revolve around very pedestrian abuses of power for financial gain, rather than the extraordinary and lurid fantasies cooked up to capture the imaginations of the listener/reader.

What boggles my mind is that with all the fantastic mysteries and wonders of the natural world and further universe, people are content with shallow, easily explained bunkum being sold by charlatans. The weird shit that people have found swimming around the bottom of the deep sea trenches is way more interesting to me than "maybe this blurry image is a bigfoot/ghost/aliens?!" Engineers figuring out the cunning mechanics of how the pyramids were built is infinitely more interesting than "it couldn't have been humans because I don't understand how, so it must have been aliens/supernatural!".

A lack of understanding is always a starting point for legitimate enquiry, and it can also be a valid resting position of "I don't know", but it's never a valid way to form an argument that "because I/we don't understand X, it must be Y".

Kow, out of those other options, yes.

I'd agree there's a kooky mythology around UFO's that's been commercialised to absurdity but bodies continue to take credible sightings seriously. I've still not seen a sensible argument about what else the 2004 Nimitz encounters were.

Edit: DJ, I don't want to believe, I just want to know.

  • ... Edit: DJ, I don't want to believe, I just want to know.
And that's the problem, there's just some things that you either can't know, or can't know right now.
Maybe in 10 years time when some drone test project is desclassified we'll find out what the "tictacs" are, or maybe not. But in the meantime, there are people out there who are making money from selling "woo": https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Woo

If you're desperate to *know right now*, then you are putting yourself in a vulnerable position where you can be taken advantage of, and this world is not short of amoral people who are willing to take advantage of the desperate. It's how mediums and spirit guides and the like operate, partially hidden under the guise of "it's just entertainment!".

Aliens is only 'sensible' because it fits into a modern mythos. It would have been fairies in the 19th century. A technology advanced of our own in order to explain something we don't understand is the same as claiming it's magic. We maybe don't have an explanation at the moment. That doesn't mean it can't be explained with the knowledge we have.
