I had a SNES. Buddy had an MD. I enjoyed both but I'd take the SNES every time.
MD has a very Western influenced library while the SNES has a JPN influenced one and is all the better for it. Japan was where the innovation was at the time.Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009. -

This - I loved my SNES but if my mum had offered me a Mega Drive with Sonic 2 for xmas '92 instead of Buster Bursts Loose which is what I received I would have taken it in a heart beat.

I find this very interesting. Now that western development has become a bigger deal over the last 10 years it makes me wonder about 3rd party support for GCN/Wii and Wii U. Was it ever there for Nintendo?

Although it was widely accepted that 3Rd party games looked better on SNES due to ALL THE COLOURS.
See Sunset Riders, for example.

Donkey Kong Country was a stunning LOOKING game, nothing special to play though, and wasn't anywhere near as good as Sonic 2, or Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I never liked Sonic. Far too easy.
Press right. Hold right. Occasionally jump. End. Repeat.
Mario games were (are) far superior. In fact stuff like Zool, Cool Spot et al were also better.
Sonic was 'casual' before that was even a thing. Smelly girls could even manage to play it.
