Monster Hunter
  • Forgot what a pain Giggi can be.  Rocked up in a set of Wroggi gear with Capture Guru on it.  Fearsome Maw get!

I'm thinking Wroggi wasn't in Tri?  Nice addition if so.  Damn my ageing memory if not.

  • Pumped a couple of updgrade stones into my chainmail DAMN YEAH LET'S GO CROCODILES
  • The best thing about gemming is that you can remove them. Flexibility.
  • nice

Haven't been to the port to start any quests yet - I take it that's where the real action is?
  • No, the village is the main 'story' the port stuff is just scaled slightly higher, and mixed up a little.
  • I see, thanks.

Rocking a 'Bone Katana', it's so sick. Was so happy when I realised it has a super meter that knocks out a sweet combo when it's fired up. Might stick with this weapon for the duration.

Wroggi started in P3rd (where it was called Froggi).  Annoying poison gassing things.

SnS is great for Gigi, or lance (with guard up) for making it the most boring (easy) fight ever.
  • Killed my 6 crocs at lunch time woo
  • Well there is always tomorrow for DIY.  Had a good few hours online today.  Really need to start farming this higher end kit rather than just jumping around doing any old hunt.  Due to room selections I did more HR5's today than 4's, not really what I logged on for as I only had 4 outstanding 4's left to do in the first place.  Gotta try.....&.......stay......on.....point when I boot up rather than just get sucked into doing whatever, but I find it hard when there is so much choice....
  • Can any Tri vets assure me that the HR5's I have done will be ticked off when I finally get to them?

Also bumped into a few HR34's.  I fear my own time spent on the game, I shudder at the thought of their hour clock.
  • i just remembered this useful little tool for putting together armour and decoration strategies http://mhag.info/mhtriu/main.htm
  • and if you're wondering what a particular skill does, here's a video that someone did of all the skills and how they are used
  • Yeah I came across that vid the other week & inturn I went on to check a fair few of Icemans vids.

If I came across the vid's below when I first started playing I reckon I could have at least 20 of hours of my life back.  Not one's for vets but greenhorn's for sure.

  • Watched that yesterday, it got me up and running.

Sooo much scary resource management I still don't understand. Also I have like 6k Zennies and don't know where to spend them. Also, is there any stuff you're fine to sell soon as you have it?
  • Don't spend them, they run out fast.
  • Right.

Ten hours in, and waking up thinking about resource management. Game makes you a proper little collector, eh?

Also been getting jaggi with it, nailed the giant jaggi and used its hide to upgrade my bone katana. Rocking the appropriate samurai gear to complement my blade. At the time of killing it, it seemed to make my weapon glow gold - is this a new tier of powering up, by killing a big mark?

Only one 2* quest to go, so I must be finally making some progress.
  • The off TV Gamepad update is launched today.

Tonight I finally begin hunting monsters! :)

  • My comments must seem so ancient and quaint to all you high-level hunters ha
  • Long Sword has a soul combo, activated by tapping the R trigger multiple times when the bar under your stamina is full. You fill that up by hitting enemies, when it's full you can do the combo an if the last blow hits (the circular sweep before he holsters it) the sword will level up to a new bar (white background around the original bar) which you can fill up again. Same thing applies, hit them to fill bar, when its full do the combo and it levels up to yellow, once more and it goes to red. Each tier does more damage, but this only happens with the long sword.

Important thing about armour effects, they only work if they are +10 or more, some have a second level at +20, pay attention to this when you've got armour skills, a having 7 skills all between +1/+9 is useless as it confers no bonus.

Don't just stick with one weapon, try and get a few of each element in each class a it allows flexibility of approach ad there is no point specialising anyway as the resources required early on are pretty simple, and after 2/3 weapons of each element on the tree you start needing high rank materials. Case in point, Flint Hammer is the first fire hammer, it's easy to get, and the second one needs a high rank Rathios carve, which I haven't got 60 hours in, but I do also have an Ice Hammer and a Water Hammer, variety!

Early game too I'd focus on weapons with green level sharpness of raw damage, as sharpening is a bitch, and green breaks most monster parts.
  • Best thing: try all the weapons, try all the buttons (x+a for the long sword does a fade slash, basically an evade step attack) try blocking and attacking? Try tapping directions and attacking, there is a lot of hidden depth in each weapon, even the hammer!
  • Clocked the roll-cancelling and fade slash last night, really getting to grips with my sword. Would feel a betrayal to switch at this point I think.
  • I used Long Sword through to Barroth, swapped to Switch Axe, then a Lance when I got to Rathian, then a hammer for farming Qurupeco (big green sharpness, high damage, ideal for breaking parts and killing them quickly) then a mix of everything. I'm now farming for bow parts, because fuck waiting for a Rathios to land whilst farming them.

Also there is something immensely satisfying about clobbering a dragon in the face with a fuck off hammer that you don't get elsewhere.
  • @cindemon cheers for the videos, even though I am 25 hrs in they were still useful.

  • Need to traquilise something - what's the best way to get materials that do it, can you buy them?
  • Look up combos, tranquilliser bombs are Sleep herb+sleep shroom=tranquilliser
    Stone+sap weed=casing
    Casing+tranquilliser=tranquilliser bomb

That said, if you need to capture something, just do its capture quest and you get a 4 tranq bombs in the supplies, you only need 2 per monster so you can save a supply up over time.
  • Ahhhhhh I see. Thanks Temps. I always forget about the supply box.

When you set out to you leave with the absolute bare minimum? I usually have:

    Whetstones
    Mega Potion
    Meat
    BBQ

if I could take sauce i would
  • Strolled pass the 144hr mark yesterday & still there is a fuckton of sheeeet to do in regards to village & port HR hunts let alone my shopping lists.  Not sure if I should laugh or cry.
  • @cindemon cheers for the videos, even though I am 25 hrs in they were still useful.

The sad thing is I watched part 3 again the other day & still learned.  I did not know charms had slots.  WHY the FECK did I not spot that earlier after giving up a week of my life to play this game.
  • I set out now with
    Mega Potions
    Whetstones
Energy Drink (easier to make plentiful supplies than meat)
    Paint bomb
Shock trap and tranq bombs (in case i want to end it early
    as core items, then optionally

Demondrug + Armourdrug if i'm up against a badass
Max Potion if i'm up against a badass
Antidote if likely to encounter poison
Dung bombs if i'm likely to encounter multiple monsters

If i'm doing a gathering quest or minion slaying i just take a hunting horn with health and stamina songs, then all i need is
    Pickaxe
    Bugnet

then my bag is super clear for materials, and usually i'll mine a whetstone by the time i'll need one

I have Heat Cancel on my talisman/decorations so i never need cool drinks, i still ahve to take hot drinks to the tundra though
