Damn I wish I could get tipped sometimes.

I have never tipped a barman. Never even considered it. I'll tip waiting staff for good service but tipping bar staff feels a bit like tipping a bus driver or something. Even when I was bar staff, I never expected or sought a tip.

Years ago in Ireland, giving a tip to a barman was a way of insulting him, a kind of sarcastic gesture.

I worked in a bar in my youth and tipping wasn't a thing and not something I really often consider now. Basically cos i'm doing half the work walking to bar, waiting to be served, then carrying the drinks back. I think it needs to involve table service, and paid on a tab, for tipping to be a consideration. Like if the bill's £50 i'd tip a fiver or whatever, but if i'm buying 10 separate drinks at a fiver a pop i'm not given the bartender a quid each time. I'd more likely say 'keep the change' if it would just leave me with a pocketful of 'shrapnel', but then that somehow feels worse than just not tipping if the cost is £9.91 and you hand a tenner and are like 'keep the change mate!'..."thanks, you're so generous" is the strained reply.

Speaking of £50s, they're rare in my experience. It was one step short of a major event if someone had one, we'd practically invite friends and family round to look at it.

I guess in Ireland we'd consider tipping the barman like tipping a shopkeeper - just not something you'd ever do. Tipping isn't really a big thing here either - you often see tourists searching for coins to leave as they think it's almost obligatory, but really you'd only leave a few coins from the change, and even then only if you've have a fair few drinks and food. You wouldn't leave any for a coffee and sandwich or a beer or two. Even in a restaurant, the waiter wouldn't expect more than a euro or two, if even that.

I wouldn't tip when I went to Vegas, and got away with it. Guess because they see so many foreigners. In NY it's like they wanna cut off your genitals after. I still stare them down and say "in my country there's a minimal wage cos occasionally we voted the socialists in. Maybe you should campaign for Bernie, eh luv"

I tip in bars but it depends on the bar.

In some, it may be considered an insult - usually the smaller ones.  In larger establishments you are served by young 'uns probably getting paid very little. I will tip tactically though. Decent tip at the start helps with service. Usually tip at the end too.

Always tip in restaurants.

I've seen a few fifties in my time. Had wads of them when I was paying my builder in cash. Had £20K for him one Friday. Felt like dealer. 

I remember being out all day boozing once and half sobered up and i remember looking in my wallet and realising I had broke a fifty and couldn't remember doing it. Ho Hum..

Half the work because you got off your fat ass to wait to be served! Hark at that! I served over a grands worth of drink orders in under 5 hours on Saturday, which isn’t even accounting for all the other shit we have to do - glass collecting, washing, restocking, taking abuse from every other customer because we’re busy and they think it’s the staff’s fault we can’t memorise the order of thirty people waiting to be served. Fuck me.
