Last thing I sold on eBay was a Nuon DVD gamepad to a guy in Israel. (In know).

I sold it for £200 (yep - they are rare, especially new in box) and he paid that + £30odd quid postage all up front.

There was some fucking about in customs on his side and he had to pay what he called a "small" duty fee.

Model buyer. I'd have been getting twitchy though if that happened now.

  • It's a bad sign for eBay when Facebook is a better alternative!

Posted, it has been delivered, they are just sitting on it.
It was a trading card though so it might be because of a lot of scams in that space.
  • I have a Lego set to sell and I think I'm going to use Bricklink instead.
eBay is just too sketchy these days for selling

Plus dealing with moronic questions. Put it on a "or Best Offer" thing and still get "Wotz the lowest you will take?" messages.
  • EBay and Facebook seem to be populated by the same kind of users, all incapable writing anything vaguely comprehensible.

Specialist channels are the way as far as I can see. The N64 FB group I sold in was populated by sensible folk. I looked around for a while before putting my stuff up for sale. Quick sales at prices aren't really feasible unless you go to a reseller and take a hit.

Currently selling some Nintendo Switches that I've refurbed and eBay is hell on earth now. They take 13% of your fee, so that massively swallows up any (if not all) your margin. In terms of the punters, I had one offer me £40 for a fully working Switch with Joy-Cons. £40, when they're still £280 in store. Forty effin quid. I should've put an auto-reject option on the offers, so I'm half to blame, but still. Did that person really think I'd say to myself: What a great deal, I'll sell?

With ebay and paypal charges it's hard not to feel stung now.

Best to put a minimum/reserve price on anything of value, but ebay doesn't feel like an auction site any more - it's all BIN etc.

  • Yeah it stopped being an auction site a long tme ago.  Shame.  I have very fond memories of when I first started using it in 1999/2000.  Rebought lots of my SNES games that I had sold to fund the PS a few years before.

Best was a guy in South London who was selling sealed Super Mario World.  I won the auction for £40, went and collected it.  A small flat full of so much shit including things like Stormtrooper helmet and other junk.  He seemed to have quite a few copies of sealed SMW... I should've bought them all from him, seeing as they go for thousands now!

I only ever sell when I get fixed £1 fee offers, which I get quite often.  PayPal fees are still a problem though, but what can you do.

More than likely. If you’re interested, let me know. I can supply serial numbers that can be checked on the usual sites.

PayPal is not a part of eBay anymore, you don't have to use it. eBay have increased their fees but it works out slightly less that the old eBay and PayPal combined.

Still stings but I still find eBay the best place to sell most things.

Are these the launch ones? Think I’ve got one kicking about somewhere. You can buy from me if I can find it.
  • Prises OG Switch from youngest child’s tear stained hands.
  • I PM'd Syph but haven't really researched. I imagine prices could be eye-watering for originals.

  • Replied, Hodge. I’m sure I can help for a reasonable price. I’m not really doing it for money, just to learn something new.

  • To be fair, most of the problems people are having with eBay are a little unfair. If you sell on eBay a couple of times a month like me you get the money within 36 hours, if it’s your first time selling or first time in a long time it me understandable it’s a bit more of a pain. Buyer protection AND yes keeping your money for longer.

With the ‘best offer option’ you can put a minimum that you’d accept, I sold an Apple Watch 7 on Tuesday, starting bid at £200 but took offers over £250. I agree they take far too much but such is life, not a fan of the alternatives and I’m too lazy to bother looking. Nearly every weekend it’s free to list so I’ll just Chuck stuff on in a weekend, put a reserve on and a minimum I’d take for an easy sell as a minimum make an offer.
  • Picked up a 'water damaged' Xbox Series S this week for £90. Figured it would make a change from the Nintendo Switch and give me a new project to work on.

I've opened it all up, dust everywhere, along with the described water damage. It was quite significant, but the real issue is that 4 components are missing from the board - meaning it has already been worked on by someone and they've given up and decided to sell it as 'water damaged'. Some people are so low.

When I sold a Switch I couldn't get working, I explained exactly what I had done, what had been successful and where I had failed. It sold quickly and ultimately without issue (albeit the buyer thought he had someone he could constantly run a fixing commentary by every few hours, when I didn't really care - okay so you're better than me, well done). In this case, it's clear that someone is just looking to hide behind the 'it was sold as damaged/faulty, no returns' nonsense. That doesn't work for me, if you have deliberately withheld information to get a sale.

I've requested a return. I doubt he'll engage and perhaps the best outcome I can hope for is eBay to refund me and I keep the parts that I have. Worst case, I have to replace those parts, or get another donor board, or...... who knows. Sigh.
  • Ebay has been chasing the brand sellers for some time which is strange considering most brands look on it as a place to sell end of line items. I used to do a lot of selling on there but I'm more likely to use a group instead of selling to someone who might game the system to get a freebie.
Sometimes here. Sometimes Lurk. Occasionally writes a bad opinion then deletes it before posting..
  • Syph, again take it through the resolution centre. The xbox clearly wasn't just water damaged, it was missing key components. As a buyer Ebay will totally side with you on this, sellers don't tend to have much recourse when the item isn't as described.

  • Cheers, Eric. Doing that now. He replied to my message yesterday to offer me a 'slight discount' and I've said no and raised an issue. Selling something that's broken doesn't mean you can mug people off. He made out that he didn't know anything about it, but that's total lies.

In other news, I bought an Elite Series 2 controller that was sold with drift. Paid £60. Has arrived today looking as good as new. I've done an update on it and I can't see a single issue with it.
