Star Trek
  • Still, SNW might be ok. Pike was the best thing about Discovery.

So SNW. How in fuck was this written by the same people? This felt more like Trek than any of the new stuff. It wasn't perfect but it was so far beyond Discovery and Picard. Realistically I think it may be a downward slide from here like Picard S2 but there is plenty of scope for optimism.
Cap'n Pike's charisma is carrying a lot at the moment too.

    I did have a quibble....

  • Oh, yeah, sorry seen some complaints on the interwebs and saw a link that you actually weren't making. Yep, that can't have been a jolly experience for La'an.

Looking forward to ep2, really hoping it doesn't follow the pattern of good opener and quick crash and burn.
  • Hopefully yeah the quality keeps up.
Also, know what I like??? I CAN NAME THE BRIDGE CREW!!!!!
Uhura seems fun! Really liking her and the Doctor and assistant seem good. Ortiz also. Makes a nice change from Discovery.

  • Loved the way Uhura helped solve a problem. Chapel does the quirky thing without being annoying (Tilly) or murderous (Jurati). Doctor is intriguing. Didn't catch his name, but I'm sure I will.

I enjoyed the conversations in this episode. Actual, thoughtful conversations that have meaning and motivate characters.

Again, not sure if Discovery and Picard have just tanked my standards.
  • Hahahaha we are excited about characters actually revealing their names and having conversations that make some kind of sense. Yeah the quality bar has been lowered :D

    Mister Doctor?
  • In the traditional naming convention, it's Lord Dr. Actually.
  • Lord Dirk Tar, Son of Kerplunk
  • Well well well. Episode 2 of Strange New Worlds was a banger. It was like a proper Trek episode. I'm impressed.

Best modern Trek. Hands down. Let's cut the series short before there's a chance to screw it up.

The tone is nice and consistent, layered story lines that thematically relate to other plots and characters. The conversations are believable and very well performed. None of that rapid fire SCIENCEFUCKYEAH planning in Discovery. You get Pike getting opinions from his senior crew and then putting it into a plan. You see reasoning and motivation that speak to the characters and how their backgrounds and personality affect their contributions. With Discovery, the crew are so shallow that I have very little to go on. They're reduced to characteristics (particularly shit cos that means I have the gay ones, the NB one, the trans one, the Asian one and Jesus Burnham). Picard relies too much on what came before and then shat all over it.

Oh, FANTASTIC shots of space shootout in the last ep. No reliance on shake and blur to transmit pressure, clear and well directed shots.

Good ep, solid 7.5/10, very much liking the crew, story, episodic but still with overarching themes. Roll on ep3.

I agree with all of this. It made me especially sad because it highlighted what missed opportunities Picard and Discovery were.

EDIT: LOL at RLM. They don't even attempt to highlight the nonsense plot anymore, so bad has it gotten.

My only grip/query on episode 2 (aside from the sublimation) was :

  • That’s Picard finished. The second half of that was so painful. It stopped being hilarious bad and became boring bad. But it was so, so bad. You could take any 5 minute segment and spend an hour breaking down why it was so terrible. Things that should matter don’t. People know things they couldn’t possibly or don’t realise things they should. Or don’t care about things that are terrible. Like at one point they lose their only way home and no one gives a fuck. It’s not even mentioned. None of them even remark on it. Despite them spending the past four or five episodes going to special lengths to protect it.

Agh. I can’t get into it. It’s endless, bottomless stupidity. Every scene. It might be the stupidest thing I’ve ever watched.

It is truly an incredible achievement. Part of me wonders if it was a "The Producers" scenario behind the scenes.

  • I think you’re onto something there. One of the producers was talking about doing a Seven and Raffi spin-off show.

lol fuck me, there's an idea. No offence to the actor that plays Raffi of course, but is there anyone out there that actually likes Raffi? Car crash of a character with zero redeeming features.

Episode 1 of Discovery Season 4 seems almost Shakespearean compared to the shite that was Picard. It makes sense so far, and not a single Burnham tear.
  • I'm enjoying DS9. It's only the beginning of S1, but it feels less of a dramatic change than the transition from the original to TNG. Being able to use and expand on the universe that TNG created certainly helps to make it feel familiar.
I win... in the most minor way possible.

Really? I've not watched any s4 yet. The ending of s3
    was just so amazingly terrible.

Episode 3 of SNW world's done. Again very solid. It actually SHOWS the characters being brave/selfless etc etc rather than constantly telling us how great they are. It's a lovely change.

I’ve only watched the first episode so I’m sure it’s got time to go down hill. Saving SNW until it’s done.
  • Ah, Strange New Worlds keeps on being the Trek we deserve. 4 for 4, might not be a fluke!

There was a brief scene with Una and La'an (I know names!) and it was a bit terse but there was no histrionics or drama. Conveyed what it was meant to, did well and no one had a meltdown about it.

Complete different approach to how Discovery would have done it.
    Spoiler:
  • Just finished watching episode 4 myself. Yup 4 for 4 bangers. The setup in episode 4 sounds like it may be an interesting development that might play out over the rest of the series. This is proper Star Trek for sure. The crew are excellent and they act like Starfleet officers. Great stuff
