  • Looking good Dan.

I’ve noticed one frustration with Persona sites – the type size can be really inconsistent on different devices/browsers. They especially don’t handle browser window resizes as well as I’d like. Reduce the window height and your text shrinks down to unreadable, rather than staying legible and allowing scrolling.

Nice selection of work on show, good to see some of your day job rather than just the Arkotype/gaming stuff. And Arjo Wiggins must have been a nice client to work with … (I used to do sample books for them back at the arse end of the ’90s).

    Thanks man

Yes agreed - it's a bit all over the place, tablet is especially tricky - I'm going to get a friend to do some custom break points so I can get it looking right.

Arjo were great to work with - we collaborated with North in London who were amazing - quite a tricky project but definitely enjoyable!

  • Dunno if you guys have followed the Work thread, but I’m looking to change jobs so I’ve been pitching myself to all the good local agencies as a senior designer or creative director. Narrowed it down to five places who were all ‘very interested’ and I’m now at the stage of sitting back and waiting until one of them makes the first move with a proper job offer.

Well, last night I got my first knockback. The reasoning being that I don’t have enough traditional graphic design work (specifically print) in my folio.

That’s a bit of a shitter, as it’s always going to be somewhat chicken and egg for me – I want to change jobs so that I can get back into more print and traditional graphic work, but I need someone to take the leap of faith and hire me before I can do any to put any in my book, y’know?

I don’t have time to build up freelance or self-initiated projects. I want out of my current place ASAP.

  • I've got a WordPress based site. Am updating my theme and ideally would like to keep current site as is until new theme is perfect.
So can I place the new site in a temp folder and access it like normal via a direct link www.mysite.com/tempfolder/ ?

Or is that not how it works.

  • Bump. No idea what i'm searching for and not getting anything useful from Google.
equinox_code "I need girls cornered and on their own"
  • I think you can. You just create and place it into a URL that is not linked from on any other part of the site. So you type the address directly in.
You can also just do the whole site on your computer then upload it all when it's how you want it.

  • Failing at Googling what im after here..

Is there a rule on where to upload videos to these days? I've got a short form documentary on a photographer that i'll upload to YT or Vimeo or both.

Anyone read any articles on promoting similar (or any) content? Also curious about paid social sites advertising.

Social media paid advertising is pretty easy, just make sure you understand who your target audience is first, so you can refine your targeting and get the most for your money.

As for hosting the video, upload it to the social media platform you want to promote it on, the algorithms favour "native content" so will promote native videos more than linked videos.
  • Cheers Goober. Don't think I grasp native over linked videos. Can you explain please?
equinox_code "I need girls cornered and on their own"
  • Algorithms favour direct/native uploads on social media over shared links from youtube/vimeo (basically anything that steers traffic away from the social site is viewed far less favourably)

Yeah, pretty much that. You will want to upload the video directly to the social media platform(s) in use using their upload/share function, rather than linking it to an externally (to the social media platform) hosted video.
  • Ah right, I see. Although isn't that how I could end up in a situation where on Facebook my directly uploaded video has 10k views whilst on YouTube, my main version is sitting at 50 views as nobody knows it exists?
equinox_code "I need girls cornered and on their own"
  • Pretty much. Depends on what your aims/objectives are.

If the focus is on youtube/vimeo views, get it shared on forums, groups, websites etc. You could put a video snippet/teaser together for social media with a link to the full youtube video in the comments to help drive traffic there.

    Hope that helps.
  • Maybe give it a spicy title and upload it to Pornhub?
Come with g if you want to live...
  • Yeah, I guess with a snippet/trailer I'm then relying on people having to click or manually enter a link to then rewatch part of what they've already seen (2m40s total length).

I guess I'm just finding it a little frustrating that I can't just host in one place.

Yes, but why do you need it on YouTube?

And this is good advice. Video views on Facebook/twitter usually drop off after about 20 to 30 seconds. So making a short teaser that links to YouTube/Vemo is a good idea. Also, most people have sound off on social media, so if there is important audio make sure it's captioned so it can be read (and read on a phone, as that's how the overwhelming majority of social media content is consumed now).
  • Yes, but why do you need it on YouTube?

I'll be filming another documentary very shortly and I'd like to establish my YouTube account as a place where all my stuff is. Partly to promote myself.

Also I've got a lot of content on my yt account already (mainly music videos I've shot) so it'd be good to potentially give those a little more exposure.

May be my thinking is off/out dated. But seems odd to me to pay a lot of money to advertise a FB version of my content whilst my YT account shows no traction.

One last reason is if its only on FB the video will sink once I've stopped promoting it where as on YT (or Vimeo) it'll exist forever and, ideally, be recommended when people are watching similar videos.

Good idea on the trailer, Mike. Ill make sure I do that.

Sorry, that comment sounded a bit snarky but it wasn't meant to be. I think hosting on YouTube with teaser trailers on Facebook and Twitter is a good idea. I can't stress enough how important it is to make sure your social media videos work without sound, and that they grab the viewers attention in the first few seconds.

Have you considered other platforms to promote it on too?

    Instagram, Reddit, other forums etc?
  • Didnt read it as snarky. Yep, will consider everything available. Have only just finished the film and this is the first step into researching everything.

I'm all over the trailer. Every bastard client at work wants one these days.

I've been doing some design for myself instead of clients.
