  • Okay then I'll pick my five from that lot.

    No Country for Old Men
    Assassination of Jesse James
    Zodiac
    In Bruges
    Apocalypto

Manchester by the Sea and Memories of Murder better than anything on the list though.

I can't even comprehend the bullshittery involved to say that film is the best of the last 20 years. Unbelievable.

There’s a load of amazing films in there and to break out stuff like LoTR is nonsense. This list is pureLy about timeliness and self reinforcing ideals of “great” films. No way is Get Out better than Training Day for example. It’s all about recent memory and discussion on forums. Nothing to do with how good the films are.

I still stand by the fact that people are enamoured by Mad Max because of how it’s made rather than it being a good film. Average acting (Theron excepted) and a plot that is less than paper thin. Oh but the cars were really trashed like the old days. None of this CGI nonsense. Must be a great film. Bollocks.

Dante knows. Is it less than 20 years old?
  • I had to check, June 2000.
  • I like Fury Road because I enjoyed it.

It's not the best film of the past 20 years but it's a good movie.
I suspect an aspect of its popularity is its simplicity in a time when movies can often be overly complex, have political messages shoe horned in or are part of a 56 movie interwoven saga.

It looked good and the cars went smashy smash, that's what people wanted and that is what they got.

See I get that. Simple honest answer. But the acclaim that followed was because of the craft etc. It was a diversion from an ok action film. Look I enjoy John Wick, but no way am I going to put it on a pedestal beyond what it is. That isn’t what happened with Fury Road, I think even with some people on here.

Went to see it on a whim, expected to see another exhumed franchise that should've stayed dead.
Soon as the credits rolled I knew that was cinema greatness and deserved every plaudit since.

But everyone was raving about the physical effects at the time.

I watched some making of stuff to show a lot of post processing, mainly in the environments and sets etc. Anyway I guess I’m on my own here. It just left me numb and underwhelmed. I’d rather watch Thunderdome again.
  • Ah yes Blade Runner 2049 too

I really like Moonlight, but quite a simple film. Culturally significant though.

Arrival I really enjoyed. Best not to go in knowing anything.
