PEECEE HELP
  • Can anyone recommend a free virus application that won't chew up my cpu constantly?

Or even just a good commercial one?

Win xp 86 (on a bootcamp partition on a mbp).

    Cheers

  • does "microsoft security essentials" run on XP?

i know it's inherently wrong to suggest a microsoft product, but i find it pretty good and it doesn't seem to eat resources....

I've found Avast quite unobtrusive and user friendly.

This is me looking forward to you explaining why that is.

It seems to do the job with minimal day-to-day fuss for me but, for some as yet inadequately explored reason, often when I run a full system scan it BSODs my PC.
  • I'll give Avast a try, it sounds like the kind of anti virus program a pirate might use.  Avast ye virus scurvy!

Avast is fine. As is Windows Defender. Remember not to have both running at the same time.

Is anyone else's Flash player crashing like a bastard in FireFox? Freezing the browser for a few seconds, stuttering playback.

Only started doing it in the last week or so.

I disabled Realplayer Browser Record 15.0.4 plugin and that fixed it for me.

I think now Flash wasn't actually freezing FF, it was making it lose focus so scroll did nothing.
  • Avast seems to be working out fine, thanks for that tip!

I have an iTunes question, slightly embarrassing as I'm actually an audio guy for my 9 to 5 job!  I recently wiped my mac and the iTunes library xml file went with it.  Although all the music fro the library is still happily organised on an external hard drive.

My question is, is there a way to bulk import folders and have them made into playlists?  If i drag more than one folder into the playlist panel iTunes just puts all the folders content into one playlist :(

  • Anybody know how many Google Accounts one person can have? I've just set up ten, purely to grab the free 5 gigs from each Google Drive. I'm thinking of putting every file I own to the cloud.

SykDrive were offering 25GB of space for free if you were previously using it. I've now got 100GB of free space I'll never use. Works great integrated in Windows Explorer though.

There is no limit to google acocunts I've found. If there is one it must be over 50.

That SkyDrive deal was good but the upload rate is far too slow.

Manufacturers (RTM) edition should be soon if it's not already arrived. Actual general release was supposed to be October but I don't know if that's changed.

I'm rebuilding my PC and you've just reminded me to check my MSDN account for Win8 RTM, ta. That said I am impressed the machine in it's current state has lasted 2 years with Win7. Most deffo a record for any Windows box I have had.

edit: nope just a million versions of the CR edition.

Do you mean you want a playlist for each artist/album/folder, depending on how you have it organised?

I think that goes against the iTunes "we'll do it for you!" creed; I don't get why you'd want a playlist for an artist when you could just select that artist anyway.

I would bulk import it, let it sort it how it pleases, then browse something like MacRumours for an automator script to generate playlists from artists, or just make them myself one by one.  Be easier not to bother and just play by artists though?
  • I like to have a playlist per album, and if there's a bunch of albums by the same artist then I use a folder.  If there's a whole load of playlists/artists for a genre then it gets another folder.

Makes it easy to browse by style if I don't know exactly what artist to go for.

Playlists from artists would great for some musicians, but some went through so many changes form album to album over many years e.g. the Beach Boys have released around 40 albums I think!

  • ... but iTunes lets you organise it like that anyway, doesn't it?  You can still select an artist to play, and when you select an artist it'll let you choose one album or a bunch by that artist to go through.  Apply a genre to each album and it lets you search by that, or you can just trust the Genius thing to match similar songs for you.

I'd say you have an ideal chance to stop manually managing your music.  Tick the option that says "let iTunes manage my music," and the option that says it can copy each file added to the iTunes library, and let it do all the behind-the-scenes stuff.
  • It would be nice to have it all done auto-magically, I'll give it a shot!

I've just discovered pressing WinKey and left/right/up arrows snaps the active window to left, right, windowed or maximised.

Dread to think how long it's done that and I've never known.

Only since Win7. It's dead good and you will use it all the time now you know. I had to go through pressing every button with the winkey before Win7 came out. Basically to discover any new functions that could be locked down on enterprise computers. Common lockdown keys are things like winkey+r or ctrl+shift+esc. The latter has been there since XP.

Ooh, will this also work with off screen windows? This would be quicker than alt, space, m, cursor keys to drag a lost window back

Yes mate it does! I've had to do it a few times when spotify decides to jump out of the bounds of the window. The problem is it will restore off screen. So the trick is to winkey+cursor to have to cover half the screen then adjust the borders. Doing this creates a new window restore point!

Hello again gentlemen, Facebookers may have noticed my futile attempts a week or so back to cobble together all of my parts into a working machine. I am have failed. Is there anywhere on the web that I can spec out what I want and have it recommend stuff?

Mobo needs AGP and four PCI slots
Processor needs to be not awesome but not that poop either

Whenever I see bundles in shops they only have two PCI slots nowadays, I haz peripherals
