But I'm also currently applying to the RAF to work as a Physical Training Instructor thanks to a brilliant suggestion by Elm and his lovely wife.

Are you not applying for the officers position instead?

In a missionary position he'd be more of an active rent boy than a passive one, provided he went for the orifficer's vacant place.

I think the personal trainer would be the passive one in the position, whom'd be providing the vacant place. Capiche?

Metaphorically of course. All I am saying is the officer has a better position, hence why I thought Chaz was going for it.

  • Surely entering the RAF as an entry level PTI would be a step-backwards from being a fully qualified private PT?
  • Today we had a toddler be violently sick in the Kids A-Z aisle. Luckily I wasn't first on the scene, so I didn't clean it. Yep. Be jealous.

When I worked in a supermarket as a teen we had an old guy whose catheter bag burst as he was riding around the store on his mobility scooter, leaving a trail of yellowy piss behind him like a geriatric, motorised slug. I saw him cruising down the toilet roll aisle spraying piss everywhere and immediately (and wisely) told my manager I was taking my break, lest I end up following him around the shop with a mop and bucket.

You should check Jem's stuff out. It's awesome. He is a serious fucking 'what? he did that poster?' professional. One day I hope to be that awesome but it would take me until I'm dead and buried.
    Link please!
It's in his sig. http://jeremysaunders.com/ and I'm claiming him for Britain.

    Missed that link.

Jem, you're a bit good. Missus just described the quality of your work as 'sickening'.

AND you have the job I wanted 12 years ago!
  • I like the subtle dot matrix there.

Has it's benefits too, very cheap housing, meals and almost zero council tax to pay. The PT marching drills as I recall are superbly camp.

    Exactly.
Plus the only real way for me to advance otherwise would be as a self employed PT and I've been down that road years ago, it's such a tough career and not in any way stable. What I'm ultimately after is job security, a decent and liveable salary and all the benefits that go with a government position like this.
As a self employed private personal trainer I used to have to work roughly 10 hours to get every single client, each client requiring different time slots often meaning I would be working 5am -10pm almost 6 days a week just to try and keep afloat.
Now that's no way to have any sort of life.

And in today's financial climate? It's one fucking brave move to make, one I'm just not willing to risk anymore.

  • EDIT: Actually, fuck that. It's extremely patronising of me to tell people halfway across the world what they should or shouldn't be doing.

Wookie, I wish you the best of luck - if you want to chat about other options, you know where I am.
  • Seeing as there's quite a few freelancers here, I used this website to get me a graphic designer for a trading logo and a great job he did too. So, I guess you could register and see if there's anywork worth bidding for.

Thank you, I appreciate it. You know I didnt think you're being patronising and I do welcome opinions as sometimes it's hard to see all angles from inside your own situation.

  • I have a shit job working for Game, despite my best efforts, I cannot seem to get another job elsewhere.

I did spend an enjoyable year or so working part time for Edge as Community Support, until they hired some people and I was out of budget. I enjoyed the community aspect as much as the actual writing, and would kill for another community/social media manager position.

In the meantime I'm just writing stuff as and when inspiration strikes, which hasn't been a huge amount lately.

No idea why you're not going for the officers job wookie, I figured it'd have the same if not better benefits & moar cash & responsibility. I am confused and had to ask as I thought that's what you'd been after this past year or so, not the officers job per se but something that had associated challenges, commitment & rewards. Not to say the trainer's role doesn't provide these but the other certainly starts you off a rung higher on the ladder. Hope the application you've made goes well of course.

Ass for you Dante. Seriously though, I miss the community spotlight. Yous were getting a regular set of posters (some from redrum) on the blogs and in the comments. I much preferred the old site dynamic which they never explored properly, because the forum half of the community was abstracted away for years.

I thought it was a shame the community blog thing was never integrated properly, would have liked to have kept writing mine but it was so squirrelled away that it wasn't worth it. Then they axed it completely. It's amazing really, they had a forum with a nice little community, they had a community of commenters and a few people writing blogs and then they shat the whole thing up the wall.

  • Yup. They lost both sets, and replaced it with Facebook. It's really odd. Future clearly decided that it was all about social media, and the any in house stuff wasn't worth bothering with. Well congratulations, that worked.

Out of interest, is there any way to get advertising cash on Facebook? Because that's the most obvious loss to me from a business point of view if you can't.

There was, if you had an admin account, the ability to view the latest blogs, which helped me a lot. I'm not quite sure why this wasn't available to everyone. Still, it was fun whilst it lasted.

I mentioned facebook in the other place's comments today. First time I mentioned it though it got deleted however it did spaz out and leave the same comment more than once. Freethinker tweeted them when they promoted the article over there, saying 'facebook, no thanks' or thereabouts. I'm trying to to contribute but I just feel so cynical these days of their online presence. I haven't even checked the forum today because I was having trouble loading it on the 100Mb connection in my office!

Fuck sake. That place really needs a new logo. I'll do it for nothing. Do I win the contract?

In applying for the post I am essentially applying for an officers position, just specialising in physical training and instruction. Comes with a lot of the perks too.

Not really, because he doesn't lose any qualifications.  He'll get paid a fair old whack more than his current gym job, and after 18-24 months of finding his feet and getting used to it, he'll be tasked with specialising in various areas.  He'll get paid through a bunch of outdoorsy adventurous training qualifications he'd otherwise have to pay for himself, and the stuff he'll have access to through the military is a noticeable head and shoulders above what the civilian world gets.  The service'll happily sponsor him to Olympic level in any sports he wants to continue competing in, and cover a lot of training, time off etc as long as he's willing to give back by training other people at his station.

In terms of future advancement, we train PTIs in rehabilitation of injuries and part-time physio degrees, and train some of them as parachute jump instructors.  Plus, once he's done a couple of years, he's eligible for a commission to go into the policy side of health/sport/training/etc in the military if he wants to do something more academic in the training world.

The PTIs at my last station included qualified mountaineers, kitesurfing instructors, ice-climbing instructors, MTB trail leaders, dive masters, rugby referees, a guy who'd been most of the way up Everest with work, parachuting instructors and one of the rehab guys.  All the training's free, and to me if he's stuck in a rut that sounds like a great way to spend a few years rather than putting up with crap management and a bunch of Essex women doing Zumba classes.

He's only required to sign up for a couple of years, you can leave with no question before you qualify, and even after qualifying you generally only have to work a bit of notice while they sort out a replacement if you're doing something important (for a pilot that's currently a ridiculous 12 months, for most trades like PTI it'll be 12 weeks max), so there's not a lot of risk in it.

There are a bunch of dead-end jobs in the military that I'd never recommend over their civilian counterparts, but the PTI/Phys Ed Officer one isn't in that bracket.

Interestingly, the Phys Ed Officer role requires a degree in either PE, something outdoors-related, or education.  If you don't have that, you need to do at least a tour as a PTI first.
