Superhero Films: Will They Ever Take Off?

  • In SUPERMAN & LOIS, after years of facing megalomaniacal supervillains, monsters wreaking havoc on Metropolis, and alien invaders intent on wiping out the human race, the world’s most famous superhero, The Man of Steel aka Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin, “Teen Wolf”) and comic books’ most famous journalist, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, “Grimm”), come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever - dealing with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.
Complicating the already daunting job of raising two boys, Clark and Lois must also concern themselves with whether or not their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass, “Little Fires Everywhere”) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin, “The Peanuts Movie”) could inherit their father’s Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older. Returning to Smallville to handle some Kent family business, Clark and Lois are reacquainted with Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui, “Entourage”), a local loan officer who also happens to be Clark’s first love, and her Fire Chief husband Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez, “Graceland”).
The adults aren’t the only ones rediscovering old friendships in Smallville as the Kent sons are reacquainted with Lana and Kyle’s rebellious daughter, Sarah (Inde Navarrette, “Wander Darkly”). Of course, there’s never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially with Lois’ father, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh, “Nip/Tuck”) looking for Superman to vanquish a villain or save the day at a moment’s notice. Meanwhile, Superman and Lois’ return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended when a mysterious stranger (Wolé Parks, “All American”) enters their lives.

    It's a no from me.

  • Isnt that a tv series spinoff from supergirl rather than a movie?

Edit: it helps to see the entire trailer screen and the CW logo in the corner. Doh. More tv series pish.
  • Isnt comic book's most famous journalist Clarke Kent?

It's superman, who I made a thread about. He's the best superhero when treated right, so I'll absolutely give it a chance. I like the family dynamic aspect as that brings about one of Superman's weaknesses - firstly his unshakeable faith in humanity and secondly the fact that laser eyes can't change a person's mind.

You may want to watch supergirl Reg, as sup and lois have been in that for a few years and i guess characters from that show will turn up in this. Maybe just the lois and clarke specific epsiodes.

They were in the "Crisis on infinite earths" cross over 4 parter. Which i watched for shits and giggles. It was confusing as i dont watch Arrow, Supergirl, Batgirl or Flash.

I did watch a whack of Supergirl and really liked it. I'm not sure why I went away, maybe it was life stuff, but I thought it was a really solid show.

    So, Wonder Woman 1984.
Let's cut to the chase, because having lost two and a half hours of my life watching this absolute dumpster fire, I'm not prepared to waste a lot of my remaining time on this earth writing about this Christmas turkey.
This is, without a shadow of a doubt, the single worst DC Universe movie they've made yet, and fuck me, but it's a pretty low bar to start with.
This is worse than Suicide Squad.
This is worse than Batman v Superman.
This is worse than The Justice League.
It's insultingly bad. It's incredibly boring. The acting is wooden. The direction is non-existent. The writing is nonsensical. Honestly, the list of cinematic crimes on show here is fucking endless, and to crown it all, I'm genuinely staggered that this movie was written and directed by a woman, because I thought the whole thing was really quite insulting to the female of the species. Yup. It really is that bad.
None of it makes a lick of sense, and no-one comes out of it smelling of roses. In fact I'd go as far as to say that if Pascal didn't have The Mandalorian on his CV, this could well have ended his career.
Wiig also gives a career worst performance, and let's not forget she has Ghostbusters 2016 on her CV. Pine phones in his unnecessary reprise of the Trevor character, and even Gadot is oddly charmless this time round.
I gather when they made this that it quite understandably tested really badly with preview audiences, and some re-shoots were done. Whatever the case, it must have been the cinematic equivalent of bowel cancer in it's original form, for this to be considered an improved version.
I'm speechless that because of the pandemic, this film has sat on the shelf for the best part of a year, yet in all that time, nobody at Warner Bros thought, "you know, maybe we could use this down time to maybe lick this into some kind of watchable shape."
I fully expect this to absolutely tank at the box office. It really is that bad. What is annoying, is that WB will undoubtably use the pandemic as the excuse for it's failure, when the truth is, it's just one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
Consider yourselves warned then. It's two and a half hours of your lives you will never get back, and if you still want to see it out of some sort of understandably morbid curiosity, then I'll leave you with this. Get it from the high seas, and for the love of God, do not pay money to see it. Go give a tenner to a homeless person instead. You'll both get more out of that, rather than wasting your hard earned cash on garbage like this.

    fool me once

I watched the first hour based on this review. Turned it off when Chris Pine was doing his Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman outfit changes. Lets face it hes no Julia Roberts in pretty woman, nor did it have the right soundtrack for that scene.

Hard to believe the guys behind the CW DC shows also make Doom Patrol. I still watch The Flash, even though that nosedived in quality after season 1. I’ll give Supes & Lois a chance, but haven’t high hopes for it.
    Things can only get better.

Nothing to do with the team behind but nothing in that premise interests me.

I'm wondering has covid been the necessary hand brake to the superhero glut. Even with the marvel stuff (which I'm a hopeless mark for) I'm not too fussed about seeing any of the new stuff - be it movie or TV. I feel they really tied things up so well over the Thanos run (starting with Iron Man 1 up to End Game) that I feel a need a good break from this kind of film/ concept.

I would love them to do something really different so no sky beam/ huge battles/ heroes smashing all over the place. Something more grounded and maybe a bit more realistic would freshen things up. I dont mean in an gory  way because I think  the Boys have that but in a proper grown up way. Of course, that wont sell subs, so I reckon we will just get more of the same which is fine, but my enthusiasm is a bit dampened.

  • CG big bads still look like something from a bad videogame.
For the most part it seems like there may actually be a plot going on which is nice. Im not sure adding The Joker into the mix is going to help a project that already had too many characters.
  • Isn't this meant to four...fooking... hours... long?
  • Yes but I think it’s been recut as a miniseries.

  • Feels like we're a hair's breadth away from disney+ showing a fan cut of the Star Wars prequels. I know covid is why this is getting such a push, but it feels very odd.
  • If nothing else it is certainly unique.
Has there ever been such a significantly different version of a movie released as an alternate cut? Im guessing not as its not even a movie any more.

Star Wars Special Editions are the most talked about probably. I think Blade Runner is the most changed movie I have seen between cuts.
Kingdom of Heaven is supposed to be transformed but I've never seen the theatrical cut. Waterworld is another like that.
  • Highlander 2.

Sweet Jesus, man. Do you have to bring that up? I’d pleasantly forgotten all about its existence.

Honestly, it cant be much worse then the awful Joss Whedon Cut (now with added unpleasantness due to him being on OTT power dick irl)

Neither were great movies by any stretch but Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice were watchable (the second was much improved by the cut but still a bit of a silly mess) As such, I'm willing to give this a go.

  • I dont know how I feel about that though.
Man of Steel is flawed but generally watchable, hard to care too much either way.
Batsoup is a mess with some fun action sequences.
JL was great fun because it was such a car crash, if nothing else we got a good episode of Half in the Bag out of it.

I have a feeling this is going to be really quite boring in places. It will be better in theory but betterer enough to entertain I'm not sure.

I get what you're saying but I found Justice League to be so bad and so long and so shit that even if it did give us a funny Half in the Bag episode, it really was a step below any of the other DC stuff I've seen.

    My Tier List -

    1. Dawn of Justice (directors cut edition)
    2. Man of Steel (Beef cake edition)
    3. Suicide Squad (saved by Will Smith and Margot Robbie edition)
    4. Joker (I know right? who'd a thunk it? edition)
    5. Dawn of Justice (cinematic poo edition)
    6. Aquaman (Loud noise under the sea edition)
    7. Justice League (Joss is a pathetic excuse for a man child edition)

Aint seen the Harley Movie or Shazam so cant comment. Dont know if I'm missing any others.

I thought Man of Steel was absolute trash.

Dawn of Justice or whatever it was called was fine for what it was, although that opinion is based on the director’s cut.

Joker for me is the best of the DC stuff. Standalone title as well. Probably helped.

Man of Steel first 2/3rds are good.

Wonder Woman 1 is a decent watch.

    Rest is just shite. Imho.
