The Last Jedi & Episode 9 - Discussion and SPOILERS (that means stay out if you have not seen it)
  • Or keep the Falcon but do stuff to it like bolt on separate porg station and outfit it with a porg gunner turret!!!

That's good, that way they know what's right from an early age.
  • You're all mad.
Comparisons with the prequels, get rid of the falcon.
    It's descending into utter insanity.

For the record - Rey in Ireland was great, Rey IM'ing Kylo was great AND DOESNT HAVE TO HAVE BEEN DONE BEFORE ITS SPACE MAJIK/LAZERS WORLD. Pawgs were great and barely in it.
    Crystal Foxes were great.
    Crait was cool as fuck.
Snoke was dross and needed to die because Andy Sirkis (nuff said).
Fight with the guards was the bomb, I genuinely thought one of them might not make it out of here at one point. As for the they forgot all their force powers, well they are fighting for their lives in a blink of an eye, maybe they didnt stop to think 'hhhhmmm what could I do here with my powers?'.
Star Destroyer ship designs - all of them - were the mutts nuts.
    Lightspeed suicide was jaw dropping.

It had so much going on it was ridiculous, it's bound to misstep here and there which it did but in general... Get the fuck out, the lot of you.

  • I'm with you @pantyfire. I think it was better than TFA, albeit with more flaws.

I can see why people wouldn't like it but it had Luke in it for more than 30 seconds, I don't care what he done! People who think R1 was better are crazy; it was a film made up entirely of casino scene after casino scene (actually, people who liked that one at all are crazy).

Is it intentional that Luke looks like a paedo hermit in the new ones?

Surely paedo hermits live too far away from schools to pursue their ways?

And yes Panty it was better than R1

    You suck at watching movies

  • But guyz, smokes eyes are so far apart how come he didn't see the sabre spin in his peripheral vision.

  • Watched this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. The casino stuff was poor and the Leia in space bit was just...awful. Apart from that, I really, really enjoyed it. The visuals, humour and action were great and I didn’t even mind how Luke’s story played out.

  • Just watched it a second time. I both love it and hate it more than the first.

Definitely a more engaging film to watch than the TFA, in the TFA a second watch was kinda snooze

The second viewing didn't change my opinion as much as I thought it would. Good but flawed - tonally off at the beginning, good but not great in the middle and successfully building up to a decent climax.

But I've come to the opinion that it's too clever for it's own good. On the second viewing it felt to me that Yoda's line about "We are what they grow beyond, that is the burden of all masters" is basically the crux of the film. We see Poe grow from Holdo and Rey from Luke. Finn realises through the older DJ that he does actually want to fight the First Order and defeats Phasma. But it's not very well telegraphed. You don't know what you're looking at as you watch the movie. It's Star Wars - it could have afforded being more on the nose, a bit more overtly "HEY LOOK, THESE CHARACTERS ARE LEARNING FROM OLDER PEOPLE". The lack of a generational divide between Holdo and Poe doesn't help.

The plot line about Rey's parents is a bit wonky too. Main plotlines, especially in a Star Wars film should be 'sight-readable' really, you shouldn't have to watch a film twice to get them. But it's not clear that the film is all about Rey coming from nothing until the second viewing (where subtle tidbits in the dialogue can now understood to be leading into it), so the eventual reveal feels poorly signposted first time around and that particular scene is badly executed - the score does nothing and the dialogue is pedestrian. Instead of dramatically lifting the mystery box to reveal... nothing! it just kind of forlornly crumples into nothing.

There are also bits and pieces that are too dependent on the audience catching random bits of things. From social media it's clear that a fuck-ton of people missed the books in the drawer at the end. Kylo mentioning that Rey would kill herself doing the mental connection across the galaxy makes the end more satisfying but it's most of the movie away from where it's relevant so the benefit is lost. I'm sure there are more examples but I can't remember them right now.

I think there's a tendency to victim-blame sometimes when it comes to films, to be all like "Oh, this was the point the filmmaker was trying to make, why couldn't you see it, stupid?" But the audience isn't stupid, they're struggling to process complex audio-visuals in real time with, in the cinema, no rewind. Sometimes films need to work to drive stuff home with the audience and I don't think The Last Jedi always does, sufficiently.

  • I think I'm on the same page as you Eye, through reading about and thinking back over it I have realised there's some good story ideas and character threads running through the movie but I dont think the movie itself is so good at presenting them to the audience.

That's why I mentioned Villeneuve in a previous comment. I feel like he's very good at doing that.
  • I liked it. I appreciate it's trying to establish a clean break going into the next one, but it could have done with a bit more careful editing and transition between scenes. Sometimes it wasn't clear what was happening and how certain characters got to where they were, or why.

The main set pieces were more like stargate or trek. A slow chase with dwindling fuel. A mcguffin behind a locked door and only one way to get in.

It felt a bit like mortal kombat annihilation in that major characters are being killed off too quickly, but I will reserve judgement on that until we see as a whole where it goes in the greater picture of the next films.

    A solid [7] from me.

  • Fandom eh? It's not enough to just have different opinions, or even discuss why you have those opinions, but we must also try to insinuate how those with different views have 'failed' somehow. [That's not aimed here particularly, just in general].

anyway, there's two different conspiracy theories going round at the moment.

One - from people that like the film - which is that the bad audience scores are just because of  bitter fanboys using bots and whatnot to artificially lower the score.

The other - I assume mainly from those that dislike the film - is that Mark Hamill didn't know that they killed Luke off at the end until he saw the final film. As a bitter Luke fanboy, I kind of enjoy this one! ;)
There's no evidence really, it mainly stems from Hamill's actions just before/after the premiere, and fuelled by the suggestion that because he was vocally critical of the way Luke was written beforehand, Disney decided to get rid.
However, if you want to believe it, he does seem genuinely shocked and pissed off after the premier...plus you know, in the film the moment he dies is just a reverse shot of a robe collapsing, which happens after Luke falls down with exhaustion then climbs back up on his rock.... :O
Here's the before/after premiere footage, it's just about a minute of the footage from here - the rest of the video just discusses the other times in star wars films they made changes that some cast members didn't know about:
    https://youtu.be/FntZKz9fXp8?t=3m7s

Then there was a press conference after the premiere, where Hamill does seem pretty pissed and snarky.  I've set the video to the last 30 seconds or so where he makes a dig at the director, then looks really pissed after making the point that he didn't get to work with the rest of the cast other than Daisy.
    https://youtu.be/4UdWEDbYN_I?t=4m40s

Of course, you would have to ignore that Rey and Leia talk about Luke being dead for it to work, or have a conspiracy about that too....

  • Well it certainly seems mark Hamil was not pleased at certain things. A Jedi never gives up!!
A guy in work is a massive star wars geek.massive.a Luke fanboy in particular. and he loves this movie,it possibly being his favourite. We just cannot understand each other's POV. At all.
A lot of the praise I'm seeing is for oh look Rian was trying to do XYZ and see he did it,he did something new blah blah. But the stuff he was trying to do is shit!
The more I think about it the less this seems like the middle chapter of a trilogy. It's like Rian hated TFA and tried to erase much of it.

Interesting that if the response to new star wars continues like this, empire and new hope might be seen more as anomalies. Jedi often pointed to as the weakest of the trilogy, 3 crap prequels, force awakens seen as more of a safe reboot , rogue one gets some knocks as well and now last Jedi getting knocked... 2 great films, 3 ok and 4 poor.

  • Of the three new ones I enjoyed Rogue One the most and Last Jedi the least. Having said that, I'm not the target market for these new films. A new generation can have the current crop of Star Wars films and I'll stick with the original trilogy. I even like Return of the Jedi. Absolutely love the speeder bike chase.
  • Return of the Jedi is the best of the original trilogy.

That trilogy is Luke's story, and Luke is at his best in that film.

    Threatens Jabba via hologram.

    Chokes out the pig guards.

    Threatens Jabba in person.

    Kills a rancor.

Easily escapes from his attempted execution.

Outmaneuvers trained Bike Troopers on a speeder-bike.

Casually goes to see Vader and tells him he will redeem him.

    Threatens the emperor.

Easily defeats Vader, but refuses to fall to the dark side.

Defiantly throws his saber away claiming to be a Jedi, like his father before him.

Doesn't give in to the emperors lightning attack.

Vader does redeem himself because of this.
  • Yeah, i never get the hate of Return of the Jedi. Sure, if you look back as a snarky adult, Ewoks are silly and were cynical for merchandising...but as a kid it was cool seeing them fight against the storm troopers and not just cos you wanted the toys. Everything else in the film, especially the Luke stuff, is great.

  • I loved all the original trilogy. As a kid, I remember loving Endor. It seemed so different and alien and it had these cool ancient temples! And it was just a moon!! How fucking awesome. The ewoks didnt bother me.

  • And the Battle of Endor is one of the coolest ground skirmishes in Star Wars history, behind only Hoth in its epicness.

  • I think it was a page in Billboard someone showed me today that had a pie chart showing the order of the nation's favourite Star Wars films.  Was surprised to see Revenge of the Sith in second place (after Empire).  I might give that another go, I only watched it once and thought it was passable, but vastly preferred all recent efforts.
  • Sith has some good scenes but is still mostly pretty bad.
