Tempy's Mistake and then stuff about Censorship

I am not advocating links to or the descriptive discussion of grot, at all. I am interested in the political censorship of modern wars but I think that is a JonB specialisation.

I think we can all agree to move on from there.
  • Thread should remain as a reminder though - it panned out rather well in the end as everyone handled it maturely.
  • Aye. You lost a few votes but retained your dignity, dammit.
  • Tempy, I hope you don't feel bad no more. I know the feeling of posting and realising there's no way back. We all know you're not a twisted weirdo. The subject matter is interesting- but that said I'm very sensitive to images of this nature and am kind of glad I got to the thread too late to be able to be tempted to click through. If I had done that would not have been your fault anyway.

Raiz, fair one. I'm just hoping that multiple people calling Unlikely out might reduce the post count showcasing his inherent desire to antagonise. I appreciate that's not what he did here, and I'm real happy to see the apology for Tempy.

By all accounts he's actually a nice person in real life, I can see is definitely witty and intelligent, and someone I would ideally get on with here.
  • Right, can everyone just fucking shut up now, thanks. It's like an extreme faggotry BBC2 cunt panel in here sometimes.

And then you've got visual censorship and almost ignorance of war crimes and torture, but almost glorified images of dead dictators, what's that all about?

I had to walk out of the Imperial War museum about 10 years ago after walking into the WWII section where they showed footage of the concentration camps. I dont think anything I could watch online would be worse than that tbh. Felt sick for hours.
He could've just said they came from another planet but seems keen to convince people with his bullshit pseudoscience that he knows stuff. I wouldn't trust him with my lunch. - SG

I remember playing on Steam with another forumite (not in the b&b ... Yet) who kept sending me dodgy 4chan links as we played. I like him but he was a bit mental.

I remember being shown that at school. Seems kind of bizarre now. Maybe it makes sense exposing kids to that sort of thing so that they understand death and war is a terrible thing. Then again you had all that stuff about kids making jokes about Budd Dwyer.

And my Grandmother remembers seeing footage of the concentration camps at the cinema.

Back in them days you went to see a film and you also got news stories. She says it has stayed with her until this day.

When I was very young (maybe 5 or 6) my parents, Brother, Grandparents and I went to visit a concentration camp, I cant remember which one but not Auscwitz.
Im not really sure why they took us but there was tanks and other military stuff there, I guess they thought me and my Brother would play on them and niot really take in the holocaust side of things. Which is exactly what my Brother did.
I on the other hand was absolutely fixated on the imagery from the holocaust, the pictures of mass graves and starving captives. From all accounts I just looked silently for ages, eventually my Mum said it was time to move on breaking me from my fixation.
All I remember from then on was crying, a lot, but not really knowing why, apparently I kept asking why they did that to those people over and over, to which obviously no-one had an answer to, atleast not one a 5 year old is going to take in.
That trip stuck with me all my life.

My parents probabley should have shiedlded me from that kind of thing at such a young age but I'm glad they did take me there.

It's an interesting point - I've been to the hiroshima memorial thingy and also seen concentration camp stuff.
To that end, some things are horrific but *aren't* censored (or shouldn't be censored, beyond not showing it on CBBC or something) because they are edifying and should be known about, in order to avoid the mistakes/evils of the past.
The problem there lies in identifying what is "educational" and what isn't, and at what age kids are mature enough to learn of the evils of the world.  :-/
I definitely wouldn't say I enjoyed seeing Auschwitz footage and that, but it was certainly educational. Very much can't say the same for the kind of thing normally shown by *that* guy in the office who goes round saying "OMG, this is gross, you gotta watch this video/see this pic" - usually, no educational value at all beyond "hmm, *that* guy is a sick fuck".
Although, maybe the major difference is knowing what you're going into and knowing it's for historical/ethical education rather than having it sprung on you at the watercooler? Subject matter beyond suffering for suffering's sake probably still the defining factor though.

In contrast, the glorification of pics of dead dictators seems more of a cultural "look what we did to this bad guy, other bad guys be warned cos this'll happen to you, we are the good guys" kinda thing.

Another side reasoning for the showing of dead dictators is the bebunking of conspiracy theories that they are still alive. Not a justification for the whooping and hollering that has been the vehicle for presenting these images mind.
  • Temps lose the mistake bit bud, your a good guy, enough with the self flagellation.

Ref krokodil, feck that for a 30 min high with a month of turkey if ya wanna escape.

Also Temp, if you doooooo get round to reading Palestine & it grabs ya, follow it up with Footnotes in Gazza.  If Sacco has grabbed you move onto his Bosnian war stuff, starting with Safe area Gorazde.
  • What does Gazza know about the Middle East?

Crazy that they chose to show those Gaddafi pictures on the front page for everyone who happened to stroll through the shop to see.

I guess, confirming to the general public that the Big Bad Wolf is actually dead - hardcore conspiracy theory fans will believe any old shit and evidence never seems their strong point - but I take your point.

I always find that kind of thing wrong, it removes my right to self censorship. By all means print them but a warning should be provided.
