The Star Wars thread - "Chewie, we're home."
  • I still think TLJ wrote them into somewhat of a corner but there was more than enough in TRoS that was shit all of its own.

    The weird festival.
Pretty much everything about how Finn was handled.
Lando's daughter existing and then not really being developed in any way.
That woman with red and the gold helmet.

    Fuck it all.

Burn it all down and fuck the ashes in the bin.

I'm going to watch Elstree 1976 - the story of the Ep.4 bit actors and extras.  On Prime now.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.

That was good fun....Prowse and Bulloch are there - but so is the guy who played Biggs, the guy who did Greedo and some of the X-wing pilots etc. Worth a watch. :)

There's the odd tinge of sadness and regret from some of the bit players - one in particular is almost a "that guy" but didn't quite make it.

  • Difference with TLJ versus Jedi though is what TLJ did with the story and it's execution was so poor. Look at Jedi, it's got Jabbas palace, the sarlaac pit, slave Leia and Salacious B Crumb!!!! Not to mention Luke looking like a badass Jedi. I loved that stuff, central to the story or not. That shot of the droids walking to the palace and such. Lahvly. And it was exciting. Those scenes added to Star Wars.
Whereas for me all I remember about the casino planet was how boring and dark it looked. With Rose bleating about the treatment of race horse.....things and the evils of war profiteering.
And how Finn and Rose getting there was silly. That whole space chase.....man.
I REALLY don't wanna go down the TLJ hole of hate, but it took a different direction fine, my point is it closed many doors on story options. I still maintain TLJ added nothing to the world of Star Wars. Of course TROS had could still do whatever it wanted but it had its work cut out from the start.

  • I haven’t seen any of rise of Sky Walker since I saw it at the cinema.

    It’s still bad.

I don’t get why Lando shows up to the black woman and says “why don’t we find out [where you’re from]”.

    Weird.

Also surely Darth Vader needs to show up next to Leia and Luke at the end when leia looks at the skywalkers.
  • i'm not convinced the TLJ or Rise scripts got more than a first draft before they jumped straight into filming. I'd say the same for the prequels too.
Just a collection of ideas and stream of consciousness writing, that no one then read through as a whole to check it actually holds together. That the sequal trilogy did it with different writers working in isolation with seemingly no care about the next installment just amplifies the problem.

Great feels from this short, promoting the imminent game 'Squadrons'.

  • 11 new star wars shows announced. 11 wtf?!?

    IMG-20201210-WA0004.jpg
  • Official: The next star wars movie 2023: Rouge Squadron. Patty Jenkins directing. She just released a small clip on twitter explaining. Its kinda cool.

  • Star Wars should really be made to fuck off now.
Come with g if you want to live...
  • Bad Batch has been on the cards for a while, could be good.
Rogue Squadron likewise could be fun.
Mando is Mando, more of that is predictable and welcome.
The rest I either don't know of or not bothered by. I'm a Startard but not the extended universe.

Indiana Jones is interesting. Was Young Indiana Jones any good? I was too young to remember much of it.

"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • The good news is they are doing TV not movies.
The Star Wars TV shows are considerably better recieved than the movies.

Edit: missed Dino's post about Rogue Squadron being a movie.
We will see how that pans out but I'm interested.

Anything that isnt fucking Skywalkers is fine by me.
  • Star Wars The Bad Batch (animated)

I remember it being pretty good. Probably of it’s time a bit. Standard adventure capers.

I’ll watch that. Can’t be any worse than The Rise of Skywalker, that’s for damn sure.
  • Oh
So Andor is the bloke from Rogue One nobody gave a shit about.
I'll give it a go but mainly shrug.

Bad Batch being animated makes sense, thats the audience.

True... but 11 shows? Obviously they aren't all connected or cannon (or jesus, are they?) but thats a lot of one thing. I cant think of many 'universes' that could stand up to that. Marvel stuff was mostly movie but they struggled with the TV stuff (Agents of Shield worked the less it was connected, the Netflix stuff was good but kept seperate, and the other stuff blurs into the background)

  • There will be guff. There will be animated stuff at various levels as well.

I wonder if at least one of those titles may be non-fiction as well. Like the behind the scenes shows they have been doing.
  • I like Mando but there’s nothing about that show that indicates they’ve got a whole load of new ideas to spread around.
  • Marvel has a better chance. There’s literally hundreds of fleshed out stories and characters you can do stuff with, crossing and mashing up every conceivable genre.
Star Wars is divided up into space-western, space-samurai or space-warfare. And it’s all balanced on a smallish canon that was never designed to take the weight. The past and the future in Star Wars is already written. You’ve got a small sliver of time and space to tell your story in before you start bleeding into one of the movies. You can’t do anything important with it.
  • Mando could go on for ages. It is the Baby Yoda storyline limiting it.
  • I see Star Wars as a visual/audio style more than anything. It is a skin that can be applied to any number of stories or genres.
Western and Samurai have absolutely been done but there are plenty of other genres that can be set within the universe.
  • I’d watch a Star Wars done by the person who did Wonder Woman
  • 11 shows feels like overkill - like Netflix and all their Marvel series. The tactic seems to be to make a bunch of content aimed at slightly different demographics, see what works and cancel/ merge the rest. Though I guess this is no different to how comic books have always been done.

Had to have a cynical little laugh at Children of Blood and Bone off in the corner (hey, look! We're not all white and conservative! We're also adapting an edgy YA series aimed at the BAME demographic!)

  • I can't tell if Disney is massively overusing their two big properties or if it's a sign that they're getting really serious about streaming content rather than cinema releases.
  • It definitely feels like way too much. I can see Lando, Ahsoka and Obi-wan shows being hits. The rest im not so sure. Hopefully one or two non jedi/sith (aka space wizards) shows will be hits.

The Acolyte is the show that interests me the most. Set 300 years before the star wars movies at the height of the Republic's powers. Its rumoured to be focused on exploring the dark side of the force.

As there is still no Old Republic tv show or movie this is as close as i will get to that for now.
