Easy to forget most were fed up of 2D for the most part. As much as I love the 16Bit era, by the end it was generic as fuck and over flooded with the very genres that the Saturn was great at. The 3D revolution was exactly what gaming needed at the time. I'm sure a good percentage of people that love the Saturn now didn't have one back in the day. The Saturn and DC have a crazy amount of love considering how poorly they sold. I know people like us are a vocal minority talking in small groups but it surprises me they didn't sell better with the amount of retrospective attention they get. Makes me wonder if the Wii U will follow suit.

You are right, but I think 3D was a bit of  emperor's new clothes when it came to game design. it was the same old run around and collect.

Of course it made a big difference to driving games and anything with flight. And games like Metal Gear Solid's sneak-em-up made great use of it. The CD capacity gave people pretty pictures to look at too.

But the identikit 2D platformers/run & guns of the 16bit era were largely replaced with the same thing viewed from a different angle. But it did give a shot in the arm to the market and mainstream gamers who needed games to look more real piled in.

That gave devs the impetus to come up with new stuff so it did make a difference , though not entirely via the reasons many would say it did.

Just remembered - on Sunday I played a wee bit of Bomberman on SNES. I have never played the main mode of Bomberman for more than 5 mins. It's always been battle mode for me.

The SNES game still looks great. The style and art design hold up really well. I actually quite like the main game as it feels a little bit puzzly - very light. But pleasant enough. I imagine as a 2 player co-op game it would be entertaining.

Have played the solo Master mode on Saturn Bomberman quite a bit but it feels different - the levels are tighter in that game and it's more puzzle like.

I would wager. It'll at least be the most collectible of its era.

  • Did any Saturn games make it to Steam?

I know back in the day a few were ported to PC, Sega Rally, Panzer Dragoon and Sonic Jam definitely were.

Are any third party games from that era on Steam? SF Alphas, old Need for Speeds, Shadowman, old Tomb Raiders etc?

  • There are almost no Sega Saturn ports on Steam as far as I know.
Tomb Raider had native pc ports as did Soul Reaver/Legacy of Kain but that's about it.
I know Sega did a few pc ports of their arcade games but for some reason they never republished them on Steam.

Would love to see Sega republish all Saturn/Dreamcast games on Steam.
Not realistic I know but one can dream no?

  • I've got quite a few Sega games on my Steam account, they were all free from those humble bundles.

I think a few are DC games. Crazy Taxi maybe?

Most are MD games though, I know Golden Axe is definitely one of them.

Their OG XBox games would be nice too.

Steam seems to shun that whole early 3D era.

I know they can look rough now but I think it's a bit of a shame, it's not just Steam, PSone classics have been dropped by Sony.

It's like a whole chapter of gaming has been put in the archive, locked up and thrown away the key...

  • Sega am1 and am2 arcade ports would absolutely sell bucketloads on steam.
Even if it's just emulation with added online. Vf 1,2 and 3, Daytona, Sega Rally, Virtua cop, HotD, Outrun 1 and 2.

Same goes for Capcom CPS1,2 and 3 titles and SNK neo geo titles.
Why Capcom has never rereleased a SF2,3, darkstalkers, alpha compilation is absolutely silly. Easy money.

Twisted Metal 2 was a multiplayer favourite of ours, and without 3D its seek-and-destroy gameplay wouldn't have existed. Though some focus on 3D's visuals, its greatest gift is the allowance for a permanent z-axis.

In terms of action games, it took Tomb Raider, Mario 64 and then Zelda OoT to show what 3D game design was all about. It was playing those that I really felt I had to think about the 3D space. The likes of Resident Evil and Final Fantasy VII are important too though. Mechanically, they could have been 2D games, but became much more due to the different perspectives they could create.

Agreed. I'd buy a lot of those in a heart beat.

Where the fuck is Street Fighter Alpha HD Trilogy at?

I know we had Anthology of PS2 but that was two generations ago.

Stop re-releasing RE4 for fucks sake.

Emulation is improving all the time for those older arcade platforms. So technically it would be easy to package them up.  Not sure about adding new features though - would be too labour intensive.

Was sifting through my SNES carts again last night and came across Vegas Stakes. A casino sim from way back. Think this one even ended up on the Wii VC.

It's the usual thing you would expect from such a game - but - there was a multi-player game still backed up on the cartridge - it was a saved game myself and Wifey had been playing before we were married - so it's at least 21 years old....she was saved under her maiden name. Memories.  Used to play this over a Chinese takeaway and a drink or two when the funds were low - she loves a casino game.

Played a bit of Zoop last night too. Jesus that's a tough game. Splendid music.

  • Got interested in importing games from Japan after reading a lot. Have won 10 auctions from a seller called yamatoku-classic in the past days with great to very decent prices. Was still interested in few auctions until I took a look at the current invoice, shipping costs are £49.55 for 10 regular JPN Saturn cases. On top of that if I get hit by import taxes, shipping costs are included in the overall value. I sent them an email about this but has anyone here ordered anything from them before as they seem to be a pretty big seller?

I thought I was stealing from them but had no idea that shipping fees are the main part of their business plan and now they are stealing from me. :)

@zonipoi - have you just registered on the Saturn UK forum?
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • Yeah, saw it mentioned few times on other forums and had to register to be able to read the lounge. :)

Got a generic answer to my email to yamatoku that didn't really say anything. Seems like I'll be paying a ton for shipping. :(

    Here's what I have won:

    Virtual On
    Cyberbots
    Puyo Puyo 2
    Street Fighter Zero 2
    Fighting Vipers
    Guardian Heroes
    Dead or Alive
    Deep Fear
    Clockwork Knight 2
    Dragon Force 2
    Wachenroder

Games only cost £53 but shipping doubles it while possible (and likely) import taxes might close to triple it. Nights L.E. boxed with the 3D controller went for a reasonable £20 but I was too scared about the shipping to even bid.
  • Virtual On was scaled down a fair bit for Saturn, but it was still a great port.  Had a pretty good split screen mode too.  Guardian Heroes is superb.

    Shipping costs seem steep @zonipoi.

I've bought from lots of JP sellers and postage usually isn't expensive. I've never been hit for import tax either. Remember JP games come in CD jewel cases so postage, even with the number you are buying, should'nt be that expensive - unless you are paying for express delivery. Sometimes games I've bought from JP can take a while (though some have arrived quicker than from some UK sellers I've used!!!)

Some sellers have low prices and daft postage - maybe this seller is an example of that. The name rings a bell though - think I may have used them before but it's been some time.

  • I did some research and tracked shipping for that lot should be £20-25. Shame really, they put up auctions starting at £0.01 daily (with pictures and decent description) and right now I can see multiple auctions I would like to bid on but I have to black list them out of principle after this.
  • I have bought a tonne of stuff from Yamatoku off eBay. Their quality is second to none and it was only recently they have started to use their delivery prices as a bit of a reserve which is why I have stopped using them. I initially thought it was the fall in the pound post brexit that was to blame but I guess it's probably a way of making extra money.

  • I stopped buying SNES games from the US because of astronomical postage costs, that plus customs charges just killed it.

Unfortunately it's pretty much stopped my collecting dead in its tracks.

Are you collecting cib or cart only? I wouldn't mind looking around for you / you can use my address and I'll send you a bigger package once every while.

I don't go to many retro stores, but don't mind to look for things. Or if you enjoy browsing Craigslist /eBay/online shops you could use my address if the seller has decent postage.

I'm not sure of the postage costs here (loads of different companies) but should be able to find that out, and it might be easier to skip customs if I wrap up the package as a present.
  • Wow, thanks @Nina that would be amazing.

I'm a CIB collector so it's an expensive hobby. I really have no idea what retro stores charge out there, I'd be interested to know if they're in line with ebay etc or much cheaper.

I'd be interested in arranging something so long as it doesn't put you out to much.

Maybe have a nose in a retro store the next time your near one? ebay is still an option so long as the postage isn't to bad either.

I'll have look around, most retro stores are in the LA direction so that's about an hour away and I'm not up that way too often. Maybe this weekend as there's a gig going on I might wanna see. Currently making a "want to go" list in Google maps for retro stores, I want to have a look around at some point myself.

There's one a bit closer by, same area where I always go to the laundromat so I'll check that one. Only been once to look at vita games, but all the covers where faded thanks to the sun. Don't think the snes games where in front of the store, so I'll check them out.

I don't mind at all to have a look around (goes for other people too, I don't mind looking for things) as long as I ain't losing money (losing time is fine, I enjoy browsing those stores if they're good ones).

Pretty sure I've seen some ebay sellers that do free shipping within US, that's when I was looking for DS games.

Just let me know what to look out for, like I said, I'm not visiting stores that often because they're fairly far away.
  • Thanks a lot Nina, I'll write a little list over the weekend and PM you.
