  • Just watched a video review of the Neo Geo Mini. Looks like they dropped the ball again. Would work as a desk toy, but seems fucking awful for serious play; upscaling's a mess and the controllers are total shite. Crossing that off my wishlist.

One day they'll get a Neo Geo re-release right. In the mean time, there's tons of Neo Geo stuff on Switch.

MAME does the job too. Has so for a long time.

    Pity.

There's supposed to be a good SNK compilation for Wii as well.

I can heartily recommend the Metal Slug Anthology, and that's available on roughly a gazillion platforms.

  • Anthology has atrocious input lag on PS2/PSN.

    Was the Wii port better?
  • Shame, the neo geo mini looks pretty cool.
It's weird how they can't seem to get the emulation right when Mame, FBA and Kawaks were pretty decent since....the winXP era?
I mean even some of their Steam conversions on windows rereleases miss the mark.

Why do some of the modern conversions miss basic stuff like an intact looping arcade attract mode, decent scanline/hq filters, an original rom mode complete with bgm ost access etc? Don't even get me started on laggy online code. Surely retro compilations can't be that hard?

I've played a fair bit of retro through emulation back in the day and I'm actually willing to rebuy retro titles if the rereleases are decent quality. If that's what it takes to generate interest in my fave classic ip I'm game.

PS2 is atrocious.  It seems fine to me on Wii.

However they did their best to fuck it up with stupid control options. It doesn't support the classic controller and every wiimote & nunchuck combo requires the use of a waggle for something - ridiculous.

The only viable option is using the GC pad - but they even tried to mess that up by not using the dpad. The left GC pad stick is fine though thanks to the octagonal grooves.

    Huh.

    Ha.

I tend to get my Metal Slug kicks from the solo PS2 releases of 3, 4 and 5.

Would be nice to have 1 and X though.

  • Question... I’ve just got Dolphin installed on my laptop. Anyone got any suggestions for where I might be able to procure some fine Nintendo RAMS. (Not asking for ROMs because that would be naughty of course!)

  • Has anyone any experience with the Pandora's Box, especially 5S? Game list looks amazing but wondering about the quality of the buttons and stick and whether the emulation good enough.
  • Davy and I were talking about this a few pages ago! Very tempting but I think the 5s & 6 are fakes and suffer from poor emulation and build quality. I think the last Pandora produced was a 5 which you can get with Sanwa components too.

Davy posted a good video a while back, I'll try and dig it out.

It's small, but I'm happy with the titles in it. I think the next move will be Neo Geo CD versions, as well as Anthology for PSP, etc. AES versions will have to wait until I win the million on the Premium Bonds.

X on PS1 was a nice game. Was a casualty of my chilloutgames clear out since I have the Wii Anthology.

The solo versions of 3, 4 and 5 are nice too. 60Hz on PAL and run great. MS3 on PS2 has a couple of enjoyable mini games. I'm guessing the old box versions are the same.

I really need to get the panel I built out of the garage and start playing some MAME stuff again. What's the current frontend recommendation?
  • Welcome back Questor, it has been a while!

Retro arch is probably still the best if you want fiddle with stuff, happy chick is decent too and it has a lot of roms preloaded but this obviously limits choice and I don't think it gives you an option to upload your own

PS2s can - well actually the PS2 is a bit different. Most games offer 50/60Hz on boot up. If you select 60Hz you get NTSC.

With Dreamcast and Gamecube you get PAL60.

AH....yeah - depends on the TV. All modern ones will work with anything as far as I know.

My old CRT will work with PAL60 fine and will also work with NTSC as long it is connected via RGB SCART.

As far as I know PAL and NTSC are colour systems and are independant of refresh rates. They might include resolution / number of lines. Not so sure.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • Yeah PAL had more lines hence the borders back in the day.
