    Is that an RPG?

Laid up with Vestibular Labyrinthitis so played on the Vita a little today. Unfortunately my internet isn't fast enough to allow PS4 remote play, so I played some of Stein's Gate. I realise it's a visual novel, but having played it for two hours I thought I might do something other than read and press x to advance the text. Seems I was wrong and the story is complete hokum.

Have you tried directly connecting the vita to the ps4

  • I just used the PS4 connect option on the Vita menu. Is there another way of connecting Bob?

It's possible, via a setting possibly on the PS4, to connect without going through wifi if they're in the same room so that you get less lag.

  • You can set whether to connect directly from a PS Vita system to the PS4™ system when using Remote Play. To connect using Remote Play without using an access point, set a checkmark in [PS Vita Connection Settings] > [Connect Directly with PS Vita]. For details, refer to the PS Vita system's user's guide.

  • Mirrors Edge Catalyst
I'm conflicted. I really want to like this but DICE have contrived to fuck it up again and ruin any potential this game had. I was a fan of the first ME, despite its flaws, but its existence should have ensured Catalyst's success.

The open world wouldn't harm the game if it was an exhilarating world to traverse, but the routes that flow and please are infrequent. Runner Vision is a path that guides you to your destinations, but it is also a path that regularly fails, and you are told it is not always the best path... so show me the best path. Many side missions are time sensitive, so exploring the best path is not an option. Combat I don't mind its execution, but you are regularly led into encounters where you are exposed to enemy fire, yet this lithe, zero armoured Faith can absorb enough bullets and blows to fell an elephant, which really doesn't aid the immersion. Bugs are evident and the game sometimes classes a short drop as a large leading to stumbles that break your rare free running flows.

Infuriating at times then, with moments of rare joy when the parkour clicks. I will push on to completion as I always do.

  • Started Super Time Force again. Had played some before on Vita but thought I'd download it on the PS4 instead.

The main mechanic of rewinding time and having loads of yourselves acting together is a nice enough idea, but I still don't see how it adds up to an actual game because there's no challenge. Every time you fuck up, you rewind and do it again until you win. The strategic possibilities of, say, having different versions of yourself attacking different targets at the same time aren't really exploited.

Anyway, might as well play through it as I guess it won't take long.

I like the sound of that.
  • I also tried Deadly Tower of Monsters, and gave up pretty quickly. The idea is OK (playing through an old b-movie with the director doing the commentary) and there are some nice touches (stop motion animated dinosaurs), but it's just dull to play.
  • Apparently I own Super Time Force. Going in the giant "to play" pile.

It's just not as clever as it should be and they should have done more with it. But if you want to play through something without much challenge it provides that at least.
  • I just looked at a video and it appears to have a limit on the number of times you can rewind/add, which has bummed me out because the fact it was offering no challenge was a big part of what appealed to me.
  • I've never reached the limit or even had to think about it. It's probably there so you don't overload it with a ridiculous number of characters.
  • I put Dishonoured2 back in last night after placing it on TLG forced hiatus.  I don't get it. The world seems ace but my attempts at stealth never work and quite often this is to do with systems at work within the game.  It's just really fucking me off and I don't think I can be arsed despite the obvious care poured into it.  I want to give it one final chance before I sack it off but can I have some pointers on how the fuck to approach things so I don't get charged by 7 enemies I could barely make out in the distance  whilst standing out in the open right next to another two who can't seem to even fucking see me?

I'm only at the island hospital so don't mind starting from scratch.
  • Firewatch. Stopped playing this ages ago to make way for something else, so I have restarted. Only an hour or so in, but so far it's very promising. Nice soundtrack.
  • Next up is Grow Home. I'd started this before as well, but not got very far. Was easy enough to pick up where I left off.

Controlling the little drunk robot is good fun for the most part (except when you fall off just before reaching the next teleporter), and it's just a neat and original idea. Think I'm almost done after only a couple of hours too, which is nice.

I quickly had a go on Grim Fandango as well, but only lasted 5 minutes. I really should just accept I don't like this sort of thing. As soon as I was left to wander round talking to people and exhausting dialogue trees I just couldn't be arsed. Oh well.
  • Dead Rising 4

Going through the motions a bit with this one to be honest. I've enjoyed the series in the past but it kinda feels like the novelty has worn off.
  • I was enjoying that and keep meaning to go back to it but you are right, it does feel like going through the motions.

One of the great aspects of the first game is being an every man in a standard mall using things that would genuinely be laying around, it was unique and that masked some shonky gameplay.

Fast forward to DR4 and we are Super Frank West, it shits guns at you, that are now far more efficient. It is rare that I am carrying an object based weapon that isn't a super combo weapon. On top of that there is power armour!

All of a sudden you aren't an everyman in an every day environment but a shit version of Master Chief or Soap MacTavish with crap gameplay. Sure there are still things like baseball bats you can use but the game is clearly not set up for this to be a viable option, with the hoards stronger than before and roaming patrols of armed guards.

I liked the Capcom Hyper DLC for DR3 because it was a side thing and fully went for it. This halfway house fails to scratch either itch.

The original also captured the sense of normality broken that it ripped from Dawn of the Dead. None of the others have pulled that off.
  • I am working my way back to the point I had reached in Darkest Dungeon, a game that should really be on my end of year list because it puts many other releases to shame. It's just so fucking smart, like X-Com 2 but with the tension ratcheted one notch higher and some of the best 2D art in a game in recent memory. Also all my guys are slowly going mad, whoops.
  • That type of game isn't my thing but I love the idea of a game where you and your squad can go mad based on decisions or how well you progress.

Perhaps a system where your character respawns but remembers (like the Tom Cruise film), each respawn sends you closer to madness, which then changes how the game plays/looks.
  • each respawn sends you closer to madness...
Have you tried the Uncharted series?
Come with g if you want to live...
  • God damn RNG. All the enemies in a part ganged up on, and all succesfully got crits, on my Plaguedoctor, condemning him to death. Fuck that!
  • Be wary, triumphant pride precipitates a dizzying fall!

    Highwayman misses enemy
    Leper Misses Enemy
    Crusader Misses Enemy
Occultist is Selfish, attacks a corpse
Enemy Gets a Critical, sending Highwayman to Death's Door, wave of terror spreads through team, one breaks... the other breaks in tow
Second Enemy Gets a Critical on my Crusader
    Highwayman misses
Enemy gets an attack in, sends Leper to Death's Door
    Leper Misses
    Occutlist Takes out Backrow
    Enemy murders my Crusader
RETREAT FINALLY AN OPTION THAT I CAN CLICK
    LEAVE MISSION
Everyone in stress relief, but all options for the Highwayman are red crosses?
Has the quirk that he can only gamble in town, but also the quirk that means he is banned from gambling
    Fuck
  • What the fuck is that and exactly how high were you when you wrote it?
  • Sorry it was a continuation of my trials in Darkest Dungeon, that's a transcription of events that caused me to stop playing in disgust last night.
