I've always had problems with it, even pre-Pi. Is there anything that can be done to improve compatibility?

Samples were used for many games - that has been gradually dropped as sound chips are emulated - but this hasn't meant the best gaming experience. Quite often a game will take a performance hit as the emulation "improves". Of course the consequence of many improvements are that they need a more accurate or complete ROM set - so upgrading MAME will leave your ROMset unusable. One of the older builds running on a W98 machine is probably the best way to go - I have an old build and a complete ROM set I bought off some guy on eBay. It's a DOS app though - would need W98 with USB support to get the most out of it now. There was a great front end for MAME on DOS called Arcade OS which was optimised for running in a cabinet. When I get a new PC I'll probably try and recreate that on my old Dell but getting W98 etc would probably be a real pain in the arse.

Just made an offer to buy it back and happy to say I'm picking it up on Wednesday
Can anyone help me out with some ISO's?
