Number of pre-orders on my friends list has gone from 12 to 16 since demo dropped. Seems to be doing its job.

This demo is awesome. Love the tone of the first scene and the first flashback. Music is top shelf and the combat control is just to my liking.

I pre-ordered the ltd edition back when the recent ffxvi direct presentation showed panzer dragoon gameplay. I wasn't sure, but I'm keeping it now after the demo.

I watched the last part of Cohh's playthrough (he gave it a standing ovation at the end) and noticed something else about the ending of the prologue:

That demo is pretty high on the drama. Great fun combat too.

When Clive fully loses control of Ifrit, he wakes up to the sound of Torgal whining and yapping. He then views the end of the Ifrit/Phoenix fight from that position. But it's still that sepia toned view we see when looking through the Eikon's eyes, so it seems like Clive is watching through Torgal's eyes. Has he warged into the pup?

It's another GoT nod I suppose. But again, I don't know how any of this is working, what actually happens to Clive's (or any other dominant's) body while their Eikon is summoned. Are they outside of it on the ground or are they within the Eikon?

I mean, it's the first act so the gameplay is pretty simple so far but it looks like it will grow and goddamn the music is epic.

They are inside the creature, effectively becoming them. I think the reason Clive was worried about Joshua is because he thought Josh wasn't strong enough to handle Phoenix. I think it's a battle of wills to control them. Ironically, that is what happened to him; Ifrit took over his mind and Clive couldn't stop him from wrecking Phoenix.

Also, if the person summoning the Eikon was just left on the field, would be a very easy target to take them out.

So I get a week of this before I have to go on hols. I’m considering a steam deck alternative while I’m on holiday. Any suggestions (apart from FFVII as I’m playing the remake) on what is the next best FF to drop onto the steam deck?

Looks like I've got XII as part of PS Plus, so will go for VI, don't mind a bit of old school.

May consider Chrono in the future.

The only possible spanner I would throw into the works is that FFIV is perhaps slightly more likely than FFVI to have callbacks in FFXVI (there was already one in the demo with the introduction of the dragoon boss) because it was a bit more purely medieval-style fantasy whereas FFVI was starting to get a bit more steampunky.

I think most people would recommend playing FFVI but I just thought it was worth noting.

FYI, it sounds from interviews that the performance mode might have been a fairly last minute addition and might have to be improved via post-launch patches. Think I’ll stick with Quality for the full game.

ERE not too bothered about callbacks but I’ll probably get around to playing all the good ones eventually so will add it to the list.
