They are inside the creature, effectively becoming them. I think the reason Clive was worried about Joshua is because he thought Josh wasn't strong enough to handle Phoenix. I think it's a battle of wills to control them. Ironically, that is what happened to him; Ifrit took over his mind and Clive couldn't stop him from wrecking Phoenix.

Also, if the person summoning the Eikon was just left on the field, would be a very easy target to take them out.

The crystals are essentially evil, and Clive is being used opportunistically by Ifrit and/or the crystals. I would expect as Clive grows the arrangement will be renegotiated.

Regarding the crystals, I only saw the one being used for a drink. Obviously they're more important than that but it's a surprise that how they're used/abused in the wider scheme of things wasn't more front and center in the prologue. Maybe they're just counting on knowledge from previous entries?

18 peeps on my friends list now have this pre-ordered. Think this game might do well - demo has shifted people’s hype levels massively.

Strong hint from wifey (via the kids) that I’ll be getting this for my birthday. No way of knowing whether it’ll be accompanied by a ps5 though - it’s pretty unlikely but not sure whether to gamble and hope or just pull the trigger anyway. Anyway, partially hyped! Choo choo etc.

43 on mine and I know at least half of them account share like me, so number could be double that or more as its only digital pre-orders.

PS5 is a bit dumb though. Woke up to a warning saying no space on M.2SSD but there is 600GB free on internal storage. There's a toggle to always install one on or t'other but not both... durr.
