Edge recently published a list of the 100 greatest games released during Edge’s lifetime. And while it is a list of great games, it’s also a pretty on-brand list that feels like it echoes a certain, fairly specific, outlook on gaming. To put it another way, it’s a good list but I feel like you could put together a completely different list of 100 games and it would be (lack of your Mario 64s etc. aside) be just as valid.

So that’s what I want to do. Nominate your top games for the alternate 100 greatest games of the last 30 years. All games on the Edge top 100 are disqualified. The games have to have been released on 1 October 1993 onwards. You can use a later PAL release date to justify inclusion but not a remaster/remake/retro re-release.

The games on Edge’s list are:
    Spoiler:

    Alphabetical version for easy reference:

  • Good thread will have a think.
  • How many? Top 10? 20? 25?

I’d probably struggle with more than 10 that aren’t big hitters. I mean, Okami isn’t on their list but would that count as it’s still a highly thought of and big release etc? How about FFXII which I prefer over other FFs?

Those are good noms. I think Final Fantasy XII in particular is one that would place on a forum list that Edge wouldn’t be as interested in.

  • I’ll do a top 10 later. Gotta think about it a bit more. I’m going to purposefully omit the Zeldas that I would put in there and discount Persona 4 as it’s close enough to Persona 5 etc etc.

  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (I would also accept 2)

I thought this was a criminal omission.
Firstly because it's just a really good franchise but also for the cultural impact the series had. So much of the popularity of the fashion and music of that era was linked to or inspired by THPS. There aren't many games that transcend the gaming market like THPS did.

    Wii Sports

A near perfect game for the hardware and again one that went far beyond just gamers gaming and expanded the industry into homes otherwise uninterested. It's a great fun game to this day and one everyone can get involved in.

Maybe add this to the OP, easier to track what EDGE have used with an AZ list:

Mariokart 64 feels a bit revisionist. I'm sure they gave it something like a 7 at the time.

I don’t mind a bit of revisionism. Maybe a game underwhelms on release but you realise after 10 years that you’re still playing it …

Final Fantasy VI and Xenoblade Chronicles feel like glaring omissions. Edit: also Pokémon Gold/Silver which I think are generally regarded more highly than the originals.

And Team Ico are completely disqualified from this thread.

This is some anti-LucasArts bullshit right here.
  • Riven
    Death Stranding
    Caves of Qud
    NaissanceE
    Subnautica
    Noita
Maybe a Total War but I can't choose which one

Those are my picks for now that I can think of.

There's a bit in the mag explaining that a number of series got screwed by split voting, THPS among them. Gran Turismo and PES were a couple of others.
  • 12 of the top 20 I submitted ended up in the top 100. These were the other 8:

    Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
    F-Zero X
    Astro Boy: Omega Factor
    Celeste
    Suikoden 2
    Returnal
    Dragon Quest IX
    Humanity

Returnal isn’t even Housemarque’s best game, let alone an all-timer.

Yeah, the UK release was late 1992 and the wider PAL release was Q1 1993.

    That helps explain that then.
