Work - The pros and the cons...
  • Schools are utterly unsustainable right now. Kids being allowed to come in when family members are testing positive for covid was only ever going to go one way.
  • The BMA reckons GPs should see no more than 25-30 patients a day.  I dealt with 52 this morning. This afternoon is a little better thank God, but I'm now ready for someone to take me out back and shoot me.
  • 52 in a morning??

Yep - to be fair the "morning" finishes at 1, but still.  Two days work in a single morning is bloody stressful.

This afternoon was thankfully back to normal.
  • Jesus, fuck.

Assuming you started seeing patients at 9 (and I also assume you were likely in since 8 and answering emails into the previous evening), you had just 4.6 minutes per patient.  How in the hell are you still functioning?

We officially see patients at 8:30, but phones open at 8 and it was obvious it was going to be a nightmare, so I started seeing patients there and then - so had a little bit more time. (The paperwork will be this weekend’s job!)

Public sector working then. In my game (IT) I might get paid more in the private sector but a long time ago I decided to stay here.  A mixture of reasons but the fact my job kept changing and was interesting while working with good people was the main reason I stayed.

At my age now I'm more or less resigned to staying until I retire which could be 7 years or so.

So because I have COVID I have 10 days on full pay I can take without clocking up any official sick days (which are also on full pay for up to 6 months). It's far too generous even for public sector to my eyes. I don't think I'll need it. I reckon I can work from home on Monday going by how I feel today after being off since Wednesday.

But being with a benign employer is a precious thing.

  • Just on the way back from a work thing in London.
Incredible experience which would be boner jams for the techy sorts here.

Yesterday we hosted a number of clients as a drop in type thing. We were showcasing a projector that despite being 2/3s up the range just blew away myself and all the guests. The depth of colour and brightness along with fidelity were just unreal. Skin particularly had so much depth and weight to it, likewise depth of field pulled me in more than any stereoscopic 3D I've experienced.
For some perspective on the type of kit we are talking here. The thing is a monster, about 1200mm long by 700mm wide and 500mm tall, weighs in over 60kg and cost £100k! The lens, a shorter one, about 200mm.
That's without the cooling unit itself the size of a mini fridge. Which it kind of is. You can have two of them depending on need.
These things are better than anything a multiplex would use even if calibrated to the same finesse yet are mainly for small rooms and residential.

We were running a number of test clips but by far the most impressive was the transformation scene from Lucy. The depth of black and white in that scene is hard to really get across in words but essentially instead of being a blown out white room there were details and gradients to the background. Its something that has to be seen to be understood.

This morning we have been at a place called Cornflake. They specialise in lighting, interior design and AV tech integration. So this is all your lighting profiles and tech setups controllable from an iPad. Their demo rooms are essentially a demo apartment fitted out to a super high level. This is how the 1% live type stuff.

We tested out their cinema room that was designed alongside my company and once again unreal, especially the audio. Waves of sound vibrating your whole body without being an assault on the ears. Awesome, awesome stuff.
Their projector though despite being still a very high end product really showed what ours can do. Something that would have blown my mind on Wednesday looked flat and ordinary today. I have been spoilt!

Alongside all this it was a great oppurtunity to finally meet everyone in person and we had a great time. Caught up with our international sales guy who filled me in with the current state of a few projects. One I have been working on to various degrees since starting for a AAA level Holywood actor.
Another at fit our stage for a director who not long ago made a decent sum selling a franchise to a mouse.

Really exciting stuff. I'm coming away buzzing.

Just had confirmation that I’ve managed to secure a promotion (which, in all honesty, he should have received y e a r s ago) for one of my team.

    Feelsgoodman.

Can we just confirm the dimensions on that projector, mm, cm or m?
  • Metres. You can project onto the moon.

Nah, still good for me. One of the things that I wanted to change in the team since I became the manager is the lack of opportunities for progression. This is a success for me too.

Lol. Mainly just kinda restless cos my job/area of work hasn't really changed and I've been at the same place for years and years. Doubt I will actually move yet though, but occasionally I have a punt at something if it happens to catch my eyes. Never seems to go anywhere, suspect I'm fairly unemployable at this stage which is part of the reason I need a shake up...

MS seem like really good employers though, tbf. So I'm probably an idiot.

I don’t think you’re being an idiot unless immediate opportunity is hovering around. Being at the same place for a long time can make you complacent, imo, and having fresh challenges can reinvigorate the why of what you do for a living.
