TPM is still fairly practical effects oriented, despite its reputation as a CGI-fest (I think it's just the battle between the Gungans and the droid army that's all-CGI). Consequently it's more coherent than AOTC (the nadir of which is a completely incoherent CGI factory scene which was added in at the last minute in reshoots) and the first half of ROTS. Still a bad film but it seems to have picked up a reputation as being the absolute worse of the prequel films that it doesn't deserve. AOTC is an incoherent piece of shit of a film.

  • Whole swathes of the prequels are boring.
You don't remember it like the action scenes but they are dull.

Walk, sit, talk about trade disputes.

Boring is the number 1 sin in popcorn blockbusters.
  • I don't think TPM is good, i just think it's better than the other prequels.

Yup. Watch Solo and Rogue One instead and maybe A New Hope, Empire and The Last Jedi.
At a push there's only 4 good films in the series now, and you've only got two of them right! ;)

I'll swap out Solo for Force Awakens, otherwise that list is fine by me. TFA, TLJ and Rogue one are decent enough to spend a few hours with, ANH is a bonafide classic and ESB, while over-rated to an extent imo, is one of the best sequels made.

  • I really liked Solo, mostly because Harrison Ford wasn't a great actor by the time it got to Jedi. It was nice to see a genuine take on the character instead of a phoned in performance.

Solo is forgettable shite. TFA nails the fun action perfectly imo. Yes it’s a clone of ANH but it’s fast paced, loads of great action and introduced characters that you wanted to watch. They then decimated those characters in the next two films.
  • Solo is decent, it would be much better if they could have just left out all the explanations for every line of dialogue Harrison Ford delivered in the original trilogy.
  • I'd watch TFA over ANH now.
ANH is obviously the OG so gets props there but I have seen it a bunch of times and it isn't a complex film by any stretch. I don't need to watch it again I can watch it in my head.

Ach, Solo was a brave move since Ford owned that role and it definitely works better on repeat viewings. I agree with @yossarian about 8 and 9, in that if they had built on 8 with 9 then 8 would appear to be much better however. 9 had so many missteps I can't really watch it again

Firmly believe that Ford being such a minor role for Return of the Jedi is as big a reason why it feels the weakest of the OG 3 as the ewoks. At that point between Indy and Solo, Ford has that Charismatic main man down to a tea.

For the searing criticism of late capitalist military-industrial complex?
  • I rewatched ep1 recently and it is genuinely woeful. Thing is, the story is perfectly fine but every single choice made about how to tell that story is terrible. Tell that same story but anchored from the perspective of Ani in the same way the ANH was about a country bumpkin going to the stars and have him being overwhelmed by Jedi and Galactic senate and war and you've got an alright film and one where you actually care that this kid is going to turn bad instead of him being a background character you wish crashed his pod racer into a cliff.

Plus then it would rhyme and repeat and mirror the original. It's like poetry ya know.
  • I am in agreement that The Last Jedi is the worst of all the movies by a country mile. It wanted to be clever but it wasnt, outside of Star Wars, its actually the worst movie Ive ever seen. (That I can remember).
Ive not seen episodes 2 or 3 in at least 10 years but I have recently watched episode 1.  The dialogue is awful and that stupid taxation stuff....but it has a lot going for it. It introduced some great characters and did a lot of worldbuilding. And at least it's plot was to play out over the prequel trilogy and dovetail into the OT.
That is the ST's biggest crime IMO, the lack of an actual story.

    EDIT : I agree with Shabby's ep1 criticisms above.

You should get around to watching episode IX some time.
  • Or 1 to 3.

Come on, plot details aside, those 3 are terrible movies. Forgot the star wars stuff, they are awful.

  • I remember thinking the Last Jedi was going to not be Star wars when the first scene was Poe making a Mother joke? I cringed in the cinema watching that bit. I don't think the rest of the film is too bad, but I'll never forgive them for going out of their way for Heteroing Finn and Poe. In fact, it's all visualling pretty good but the story was mince.

He should watch more films full stop. Last Jedi was a good movie, but a bad Star Wars.

But its not though. As a movie it didnt thrill or excite me, I didnt like most of the characters, I found it obvious (all the subverting stuff aside), preachy and it was riddled with plot holes and contrivances.
Im genuinely struggling to think of a movie that I dislike more.
Swings and roundabouts though. Im a wee bit concerned about Kenobi...I love me a bit of Obi-Wan....hoping the series doesn't go the way of BOBF.

  • After Mando I've given up on Star Wars.  Didn't get on with it at all.  I'm not touching the Solo movie or the Boba Fudd series and the rest of what they've got planned can go in the bin too.
  • This is the way.

  • I'll get my main takeaway in first here - Lucas' films are some of the best sounding films ever. He knows not only how to get the best music, but also sfx and ambient sounds.

Just watch the prequels - for everything wrong with them, audio wise theyre a treat. Something as simple as a load of pod racers powering up their engines would have been a lot less impactful under another director, and I really don't think any of the Disney movies were nearly as good in this respect.

Last week (kept awake by the storm overnight) I started a prequel rewatch.
TPM has definitely gone up in my opinion - the dialogue may be clunky but Lucas' storytelling is spot on with some great character introduction and a surprising amount of subtext.

Clones, though, is an awful lot of filler. It's not helped that Palpatine and Dooku are the only interesting characters, especially as Ewan McGregor hadn't settled into the full on panto-hero, lets have fun with this, mode that he adopts for Revenge.

Ben Burtt was the sound designer on Star Wars. He should get most of the credit.

I agree with the audio. I cranked up the podrace when I was watching ( I now have a decent soundbar and woofer) and man the engine sounds elevate the scene.
You should watch episode 5 of BOBF for similar audio!

So today, on the "Swirl watches shit that's been out for years" show, I finally watched Solo.

Not as good as Rogue One, but mainly because I'm getting old and had a hard time keeping track of the quadruple-triple-double crosses. Leagues ahead of Episode IX.
