The crypto project has had 13 years to try and find a problem to solve. It has not found one.
The real world has fundamental constraints that make the technology unworkable, whenever it has to interact with the outside world the benefits of decentralization disappear and the solutions end up simply recreating slower and worse versions of processes and structures that already exist.

LOADS of crypto mining is outsourced to Kazahkstan, with it’s corrupt autocracy, horrible climate credentials and ‘dirty coal’ industry. The country’s dictator sacked his own government and had their largest Internet provider shut down net access nationwide to silence opposition voices … and when the country’s Internet connection was shut down, the worldwide total of crypto mining dropped by between 12 and 16%.
And from commenters sharing Fortune’s story, I’ve learned that basically the crypto mining industry in Kazahkstan is so huge that it’s been causing rolling power outages across the country … and that’s what led to enough protest to topple the government in the first place.
I don’t know what the point of all this might be - I’m not sure what we learn from all this that might be useful. But I do think it’s interesting.
