Film/Video Discussion Thread
  • Cinema is a good place to take children so I'd appreciate if they were still around in a few years.
  • It'll still be here don't worry Frosty.

True for some but others will be all over it and go out more than pre-covid.
  • That's my issue. I won't be going anywhere with lots of people

At the moment, they don’t have a lot of people.

Saw Possessor last night. At the drive-in. On the rooftop of a parking lot. Could see the zeppelin hangars which is already impressive.

My local non profit has done a great job showing movies. Think there's about 3 drive-in movies a week (I probably prefer watching from the car, I've always hated the cold air conned rooms), and they make streaming programs as well. Later this month they'll have 12 hour stream of old, probably bad, horror movies, often they have some special guests on stream as well.
There's always dinner options, sometimes food trucks, sometimes it's a food hall like last night. They have a small tent set up with drinks, popcorn and candy (I miss the cheap hot dogs though). For family movies they always seem to try and dress up (and ask people to dress up). For the Star Wars original trilogy it looked like most staff were dressed up, and it was fun seeing the photos of all the kids dressed up as well with the staff. For Jurassic Park they had some stripped down jeeps and a big dinosaur I think.

I think they're probably doing better than ever. Almost every movie we've seen there has been sold out, was definitely different when watching movies at the theater itself (although these are mostly single showings).

I would normally agree and want to agree but the number of ways of watching entertainment that have died over the years is staggering.

Some media theorists have posited that the film industry is behind the pornography industry but follows it. After all, it was pornography that chose VHS, DVD, Blu-ray.
That industry has now moved entirely online and now to an advertising subsidising model.

Perhaps the first step for film would be to go online.

Saying cinema has had it is like saying there won't ever be gigs again isn't it?

The experience of a cinema visit is the draw, plus seeing it projected on a huge screen with booming sound. I'm a fan of a cheeky porn-cinema as much as the next person, but the comparison (film-porn) doesn't hold up much for me, people tend to do their tugging in private.
  • Nina, was possessor any good?
  • The difference between films and gigs is that you don’t need real infrastructure to do a gig.

Films on the other hand need cinemas to keep paying to keep up their buildings and facilities just in case the film industry doles them good product.

I mean if there’s a break in the ability for films to go directly to cinema it would seemingly start the ball rolling on direct home streaming (the films are already made). And then the cinemas would need to be profitable in that universe.
  • I mean, we aren't short of good films that could be shown in a cinema. Vanilla style multiplexes that only show the latest releases need to rethink yeah, but independents have been running for decades on a steady diet of classics, marathons, themed evenings and new releases.

    It is.

I liked it a lot. Still processing it a bit as it's not a genre I'm incredibly familiar with. It's all pretty bleak and raw but it has this strange pull.

B liked it less. He appreciated it technically, but it just impacts his mood a bit too much to find it enjoyable. "I'm done with anyone Cronenberg now" was his first comment.
  • I want to see Possessor but I'm worried it will fuck with my head a bit much.

Didn’t realise it was Cronenberg. Not an out and out horror fan but I like some of his stuff.

    It's Cronenberg mk2
  • Yeah it's his son. Antiviral had some moments, so I am interested to see how he's developed.

There's a pile of tremendous films folk won't have seen on the big screen. I can't imagine cinema chains haven't thought of classic re-runs so I can't think why they didn't think it would work.

Never seen Apocalypse Now on the big screen, Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork Orange, Chinatown.

Robocop (fuck the remake) , Starship Troopers.

Dawn of the Dead for goodness sake. The old Connery Bonds. I'd pay to see Casino again in the cinema but never saw Goodfellas that way.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - never saw that in the cinema. Nor The Godfather films.

Going back further - The Searchers, The Wild Bunch, The Good The Bad and The Ugly - dear me. Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago, Ryans Daughter.

Even more recent stuff like The Matrix, LoTR et al - 20 years old now and ready for a new generation.

The Spielberg back catalogue - Close Encounters, Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park...

Carpenter - The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, Halloween, Escape from NY...

    Shrugs.

  • My all time best movie experiences were during a period when I'd head into a cinema with no idea what the movie was..just looked at th billboard. Was funny when I went in to see a western, got stunned, and on exiting checked out th billboard and it said, underneath the two cowboys "Love is a Force of Nature". Probably wouldn't have seen that movie and it was great.

But District 9 was the best of them. had no idea, hadn't heard of it, and thought it was the perfect film after.

I went into Pulp Fiction like that. That was a slap in the gob!!!  I even remember the little animated short before it in which every character was Kirk Douglas....very odd.

I used to love film posters. They were a real art form when I was young. They're shit now.

I'm assuming that the old films were on film, and the cinemas simply don't have them. I'm not sure what sort of licensing / distribution complications there would be with multiplexes wanting to do runs of old films.

Most have had HD transfers for BluRay so I suspect they'd be suitable for projection? I have no idea what media cinema use now to be fair.

And yeah - I'm sure licencing needs sorted but if your back's to the wall you lawyer up and get the finger out surely?

You'd think, I'm just saying that it's probably not entirely in their own hands.
  • The retro cinema in Melbourne has film and digital projectors including a 70mm one.
They used to just have the film one but I think it limited them as to what they could show. As soon as they got the digital one they started to show lots of awesome double features and I was always surprised to see how popular some of them were. I think they just had to download a projector file that comes with a digital key that allows them to show it at a specific time.

They also owned a bunch a prints that they would show regularly. They used to have a pristine 70mm Laurence of Arabia print until they lent it out to a big film festival in Hong Kong. It got returned to them with subtitles printed on it that can't be taken off...
