Work - The pros and the cons...
  • Mines are 8hr shifts though. I'm sure it's probably not illegal but it doesn't make it any less fucking annoying or soul destroying doing a 180° on sleeping pattern in a day.

Evwryone across the company got a 250 quid bonus today, which is sweet of them.

Id love to actually describe how insanely fucked the company has been the past few months but if they find it im screwed.

Oh yeah, it's a nightmare.  I used to do my fair share of them; at least I could yell "flight safety" and refuse to do anything if I was too fatigued.  Not that they really used to listen, especially not once the hour's commute was removed so you couldn't even rely on the risk of crashing while driving to get a break.
  • My dad was on 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off before he retired.
At the time he was basically help desk for commercial pilots in the air, a role which is a legal requirement. Suprised that was allowed.

Was that 12 hr shifts or 8?
  • Got fired from my job. It’s a really shit time to be looking for work here. Don’t think I’ve been so fucked for money since I was a teenager, and at least then I had my parents to fall back on :(
  • Shit, the sucks Noxy.
Was it over the thing you mentioned the other day?

Hopefully you can pick something up and maybe get a better boss as well.

12 hour, sometimes slightly more for handover.

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like it was a shitty place to work. Hope you can get something better out of this.
  • That fucking sucks.

Hopefully you can get something better, with a boss who isnt a cunt.
  • There was plenty to dislike about the way this company is run, but there’s still good reason for me having stayed almost 4 years. It’s really the only job I’ve felt capable of doing, and I didn’t hate myself for doing it (unlike all the office jobs I had). I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m not a good worker. I don’t choose it to be this way, but my very low stress threshold, poor concentration, pitiful organizational skills and inability to follow/understand instructions means there isn’t much im able to do.
  • To find a positive, at least I will have the chance to enroll in full time German language lessons. That state will pay for this
  • Anyone fancy helping me with my cv?

This is the first job I've had in over a decade where I don't have access to a pc to do it myself. Doesn't need much, just adding the casino (for all it was) and my current job as multi drop driver.

The jobs decent enough, it's me that's the problem - I've properly knackered both of my ankles, honestly don't think I'll be able to do it much longer without doing permanent damage.

    The SQA everyone

Ms Sturgeon added: "I would love to be in the position of standing here credibly saying that 85% of the 20% in the most deprived areas had passed Higher.

"But given that it was 65% last year, that would raise a real credibility issue."

And Mr Swinney said he believed that teachers were often "optimistic and aspirational" about their pupils' abilities, while an exam system "does something different".

It's a shitter, that's for certain, but you're on paternity leave mate. The school can deal with this for 2 weeks. Please try and take this time for yourself, you will need it.

More than happy to, I do it a lot in my job, both teaching how to do and checking.

Let's be real and lop exam results day onwards from then to the end of the holidays off teacher holidays. Traditionally there's been no day that we haven't been working following those, and this year is an absolute piss take. It has been almost full time correspondence for us since yesterday.

Again anyone wanting to talk about teacher holidays can fucking line up.
  • After nine years as a contractor I went staff at the start of July and I'm about to have my first paid time off.  This feels strange.  I hadn't realised how completely I'd adopted that deeply unhealthy contractor mindset of "if I'm not working I'm losing income".

A mate of mine who has been a contractor for years is doin the same, switching to permie. Will have to adjust his lifestyle to account for drop in income but paid holidays are a novelty having contracted for 20 years.
  • It's an interesting one. When I was contracting I always tried to make it so the extra per diem was actually not "extra", per se, but paid for holidays, breaks, time between contracts, pension etc. It was great when I was able to adopt that mindset - took planned months off to travel, have a break, look after kids etc which meant overall income was similar to permie or often lower. Other times you suddenly look up from your desk to realise you haven't had a holiday in 18 months.

Now we try and encourage our contractors do the same but the reality is, the point is, it's up to them.

Obviously with the off-payroll rules being changed as much as they have, I expect most contractors to revert to permie (as almost all have since April), which is a real shame - they'd harmonised tax pretty well between corp tax + dividend tax and general PAYE taxation, so I don't know why they felt the need to push it - my suspicion is lobbying from large outsourcers keen to save money and recoup market share from micro contractors.

We changed most of our contracts to be managed service style with fixed deliverables, clear invoicing rules against milestone delivery and so on so our sub-contractors are all well outside IR35 but it's a bodge. Very weird decision from HMRC imo.
  • I mean to be more succinct - as a contractor you DO have paid holidays, it's just a mindset switch
  • With money I find it hard not to look at it as money for now. It takes a huge discipline to just manage money (my current strategy is just to hide it before I see it)

    Theres a cluster in Glasgow.
It'll be two weeks before staff die at a school and the SNP get crucified for this.

What you wont have seen is that usually in most schools the S6 pupils help the new S1 around from class to class.

That has been canned by the SNP for fear that older pupils and younger pupils will interact.

Lucky there's no change of class between periods at High School right.

Sounds like English maths have had similar downgrading to Scottish ones. Really tough for those involved, and again a fuck you to the teachers making genuine best judgements on ability. 39% being downgraded is crazy, and no right to appeal?!?

Is it the exam boards or the teachers at fault here??

Two ways to report this story, the other way is to say the 39% of maths teachers feel under pressure to overestimate pupil grades to meet league table expectation of SLTs

  • I think it is impossible for teachers.

Are they assessing a students ability or their ability when divided/multiplied by their ability to take an exam.

Strangely I feel the complete opposite way about exams, being able to work accurately within a high pressure situation is not a useless skill. Also if exams are administered correctly they do not reward short term fact recognition, they test someone learning over the previous two years

However the importance placed on exams by schools, LAs, and by extension parents and government is fucking ridiculous. Yes it's true that any assessment metric can be gamed, and yes it's true that we expect facts to back up assertions and don;t value anecdotal evidence. However at the same time entering into a romantic relationship is one of the biggest decisions people make and we do that all the time with nothing other than anecdotal evidence so you know

edit: not saying the system works, it's been gamed, it's been so fucking gamed that it's near broken
"I spent years thinking Yorke was legit Downs-ish disabled and could only achieve lucidity through song" - Mr B
  • Yeah I can see how they could work, although it is subject dependent. On top of the system being gamed I think they also put negative pressure on certain personalities rarely there in a job.

Having to work in silence, solo, a one shot chance, on a certain date or it is all over. Very, very few jobs come with that level of pressure and would normally be jobs someone has worked up to and practice .

Although there are sometimes issues around plagiarism in course work I feel it reflects working environments more accurately and a decent teacher will be able to spot plagiarism a mile off.

Ultimately I dont think 11 years of schooling should come down to 2 hours in a sweaty sports hall.
