I forgot about those sleeves NES carts came in. Was that first party thing only? Can't remember now.

All games had them, first party have Nintendo written on them in red. Third party are plain black.

Ah. Remember the Nintendo branding. :)

Kind of sorry I got rid of my NES but the cart slot was playing up and it was PAL. Once I got Nester running on the Dreamcast I got rid. I fancy one of those two-in-ones that plays all NES/Famicom and SNES games. Probably better just getting a mini though.

Neat. The TV show was rubbish, but still better than the Ewok films. Kids these days think the worst thing about Star Wars is Episode I/Jar Jar, but they ain't seen shit.

I've seen the special and at least one of the Ewok films, back in the days of VHS rental, and even my infantile brain knew they were turbo gash.

Going back to a previous topic, 16 bit consoles and Tetris games, the latest issue of Retro Gamer mentions what I think is definitely a contender for the most expensive retro title crown. A company I forget the name of started selling Tetris for the Mega Drive, only to fall foul of the lawyers, when it was pointed out to them that their license didn't cover Japan. The game was hastily recalled, but a handful (fewer than 10) made it into the wild. The last time a copy came up on eBay the seller had a buy it now price of US$1,000,000.

  • Yeah, I've heard about that.

The whole history of Tetris is an interesting topic.

The Gaming Historian done a good episode about it on his youtube channel.

Yeah, it was decades before Pajitnov saw any money from his creation. In Soviet Russia, etc.

One to add to your console curio list Swirl The Dreamcast Control Unit. Never heard of one before but basically one that was made for internet cafés.

  • No Hello Kitty Dreamcast in his collection. Instant fail.

(I’m kidding. That Dreamcast Control Unit is niiiice.)

That copy might have had Pajitniov's autograph on it.

Has a boxed official versus link cable. Nice.

I have 2 copies of F355 just in case I'm ever able to get hold of one of those.

Yeah I think a modded SNES mini is the way to go, both financially and for modern conveinience.
And today B arrived home with a modded nes mini. It's an early birthday present for me and a late present for him. Have a couple of nes, snes and gba on there. A lot of fun so far, need to order 2 extra snes controllers though, for street fighter. Guess the 8bitdo ones will be the best options?
  • Nice.

Yeah they work, or pick up two I've the wired ones you posted to me.

Do you happen to remember which ones they were?

At first B was convinced we needed wireless, so we bought a cheap one at Target, with the idea of returning it when we found a better option. That one has a terrible d-pad (you should have seen him getting angry while playing Mario 3), but also kept losing the connection.
So now we need wired ones, but so many of them look cheap and fake.

If anyone has experience with the wireless 8bitdo for the classic, would be nice to hear your opinion about them.
  • I've used their standard SNES wireless pad a fair bit on Switch. It's decent enough, but the d-pad doesn't seem as good as I remember the SNES one being.

As long as the input lag isn't too bad. According to B the controller that came with the NES classic is slower than the original, and that's why he was so bad at Mario 3. He ordered two of them anyway, now he figured out how easy it is to return things here (most companies don't care about the state of boxes etc) he's gone on a spending spree.

    I'm just enjoying Kirby's Adventure.
  • I never noticed any lag, but I don't know how perceptive I'd be to it.
  • So here's some updated pics of the collection. Sorry for the glare, but I've got those hardback plastic cases on them all to protect the boxes now.

Since my last pictures in has been:

    Chrono Trigger
    Super GnG
    DKC
    DKC2
    DKC3
    Sunset Riders
    R-Type III
    Mega Man X
    Mega Man X2
    Gradius III
    Super Mario RPG
    Final Fantasy II
    Final Fantasy III
    Legend of the Mystical Ninja

    Out has gone (with reasoning):

Flashback - will get on Switch
Out of the World - will get on Switch
WWF Royal Rumble - bit redundant
    WWF Super Wrestlemania - cack
Desert Strike  - better on Mega Drive
Jungle Strike  - better on Mega Drive
Urban Strike - better on Mega Drive
PGA Tour Golf - bit redundant
    NHLPA 93 - I prefer 94
    Madden 95 - bit redundant
Krustys Super Fun House - cack
    Barts Nightmare - cack
    Virtual Bart - cack
    Itchy & Scratchy - cack
Tiny Toons Buster Bursts Loose - bit meh
Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse - bit meh
DOOM - hard one to sell but ultimately redundant
Wolfenstein 3D - hard one to sell but ultimately redundant
    Revolution X - cack
Rock N Roll Racing - bit meh

Got rid of some good games there but I only want to keep what is a true SNES classic and games that don't have superior elsewhere. The glaring games still in my collection that go against that are the Street Fighters, but for some reason it just feels wrong to get rid of those despite recently getting the 30th Anniversary Collection. And yes I know Final Fight is a poor conversion but I want to keep 2 and 3 so 1 stays.

    I'm still after...

    Zombies
    Actraiser
    Mega Man X3
    Wild Guns
    Space Megaforce
    Ninja Garden Trilogy
    Super Double Dragon
    Sparkster
    Pocky and Rocky 2
    Pocky and Rocky
    Lost Vikings
    Earthbound
    SOS

... but most of those are super expensive.

    Are there any other recommendations?

Should I sell the Street Fighters?
    オレノナハ エラー ダ
  • Are there any other recommendations?

Sell the lot and get a SNES mini and some VR.
  • I'm pretty much full on emulation now apart from my SNES, I've told so much over the last few years.

Atm the SNES is definitely staying!
    オレノナハ エラー ダ
  • Pfft, sentimental fool; the money tied up in those games could be used to strap a TV to your face.
