  • That Wired article about who won and lost is bizarre.

They claim the reasoning for Sansa and The North separating from the other 6 kingdoms is "fuzzy".
It is literally explained within that scene, in clear words.

They also have Weiss and Benioff as losers. Yeah all the way to the bank grabbing a Star Wars contract on the way.

The New Statesman’s is sometimes better, but it depends which columnist you read. They have one reasonable and one nutjob. I quote enjoy Anna Leszkiewicz

I find reading the media commentary after an episode fascinating (mostly in a ‘wtf?’ way, I admit) and expect the chat post-finale to be even better/worse.
  • The best thing about GoT is how fucking seriously people take it and how sore-arsed many are over minor little issues.

    I'm serious about these things.
    Tits are important!

  • Put me in the  camp. It was 40 minutes of endings at the end, each one just nicely wrapping up. I was really disappointed and thought a lot of the acting was cringey throughout.

I enjoyed Dany going all Nuremberg rally and would've enjoyed some more big carnage like Bran mind melding a dragon to take her out or something. Instead it was all just like they were playing Musical Chairs and the music stopped so they just finish where they were real quick and get it wrapped up 'cause it's time to go.

Also Bran's weird staring at you with squinted eyes schtick - is that a schtick or is he just awful at acting. Who knows.

Good to see Bronn make it to the end, even if his character was turned into a twat at the end.

It was exactly as I expected.
  • Seasons 1-4 tits were the best tits.
  • There were definitely more tits when they had the books as source material.
  • For all my complaints, Tyrion’s chair play is one of the things in the episode that makes the most sense. He wanted to make a good impression. He also had in his head a very formal picture of how the High Council meetings should look and progress, and Bronn lounging across a chair at an angle doesn’t fit that.
  • Agreed. It shows how nervous Tyrion is. It shows that he remembers how his father used the seating arrangements to subtly belittle people and strip them of influence. And it shows that he has the time to faff around, that the council’s very existence is less important right now, in this new world.
  • It also shows how he's matured and now wants to atone for his previous behaviour.

  • It also shows he doesn’t like people sitting in chairs.

  • GRRM's blog is a depressing read

The last night, the last show. After eight epic seasons, HBO’s GAME OF THRONES series has come to an end.

It is hard to believe it is over, if truth be told. The years have gone past in the blink of an eye. Can it really have been more than a decade since my manager Vince Gerardis set up a meeting at the Palm in LA, and I sat down for the first time with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for a lunch that lasted well past dinner? I asked them if they knew who Jon Snow’s mother was. Fortunately, they did.

That was how it started. It ended last night.

I had no clue, that afternoon at the Palm, that I was about to embark on a journey that would change my life. I had optioned books and stories for television and film before. Some had even been made There was no way to know that this one was going to be different, that this pilot would not only be shot, but would go on to become the most successful show in the history of HBO, win a record number of Emmy Awards, become the most popular (and most pirated) show in the world, and transform a group of talented but largely unknown actors into major celebrities and stars. Even less did I imagine that I would somehow become a celebrity as well… and if truth be told, I’m still not sure how that happened.

It has been a wild ride, to say the least.

I want to thank people, but there are so many. There were forty-two cast members at the season eight premiere in New York City, and that wasn’t even all of them. And the crew, though less visible than the cast, were no less important. We had some amazing people working on this show, as all those Emmys bear witness. David & Dan assembled a championship team. The directors were incredible as well. I should start naming names, but then I’d miss someone, there were so many. But I do need to mention David Benioff, Dan Weiss, Bryan Cogman (the third head of the dragon, as I said in the recent VANITY FAIR piece about him), and of course the great team at HBO, headed by Richard Plepler. Any other network, and GAME OF THRONES would not have been what it became. Most other networks, this series never gets made at all.

I could go on and on… and have, as I’ve been writing this post in my head… but there’s really too much to say. Parting is such sweet sorrow, the Bard wrote. In the weeks and months to come, I may post about some of my favorite moments from the making of this show… now and again, when I am feeling nostalgic… but just now, there are so many memories, and no time to do them all justice.

Let me say this much — last night was an ending, but it was also a beginning. Nobody is retiring any time soon. David and Dan are going on to STAR WARS and other projects beyond that. Amazon scooped up Bryan Cogman, and put him to work on developing shows of his own, as well as helping out on their big Tolkien project. Our brilliant cast has scattered to the four winds, but you’ll be seeing a lot of them in the years to come, in all manner of television shows and movies. Our directors are keeping busy as well. I suspect that you have not seen the last of Westeros on your television sets either, but I guess that all depends on how some of these successor shows turn out.

And me? I’m still here, and I’m still busy. As a producer, I’ve got five shows in development at HBO (some having nothing whatsoever to do with the world of Westeros), two at Hulu, one on the History Channel. I’m involved with a number of feature projects, some based upon my own stories and books, some on material created by others. There are these short films I am hoping to make, adaptations of classic stories by one of the most brilliant, quirky, and original writers our genre has ever produced. I’ve consulted on a video game out of Japan. And then there’s Meow Wolf…

    And I’m writing.
Winter is coming, I told you, long ago… and so it is. THE WINDS OF WINTER is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done. I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come A DREAM OF SPRING.

How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different?

Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.

I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget. They had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done… and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them. And of course the butterfly effect will be at work as well; those of you who follow this Not A Blog will know that I’ve been talking about that since season one. There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books… so if nothing else, the readers will learn what happened to Jeyne Poole, Lady Stoneheart, Penny and her pig, Skahaz Shavepate, Arianne Martell, Darkstar, Victarion Greyjoy, Ser Garlan the Gallant, Aegon VI, and a myriad of other characters both great and small that viewers of the show never had the chance to meet. And yes, there will be unicorns… of a sort…

Book or show, which will be the “real” ending? It’s a silly question. How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have?

How about this? I’ll write it. You read it. Then everyone can make up their own mind, and argue about it on the internet.

  • What is about that you find depressing, Gonz? Just that he’s still writing the last books? That he’s taking time out to do other TV stuff? Or something else?
  • The video game out of Japan is Grand Rune, FromSoft's new Norse Mythology game.

As she wrote (co wrote?) Kick Ass and Stardust I’d have to agree.
  • She adapted them both. Wrote the screenplays.
  • Remember the original season one Game of Thrones poster/artwork? The painting of Ned Stark sitting on the Iron Throne looking morose?

There’s a raven sitting on the arm of the throne having a good look at Ned.

It’s fucking Bran, isn’t it? They’ve been teasing it this whole time.

  • Finally got round to watching the last epsiode. What a crocknof shit. Show went downhill once they ran out of source material. I know the show creators got the new star wars trilogy gig but did they have to have such obvious star wars setpieces in the last two episodes (mountain v hound fight and Jon walking up to see dany pass the first order flag and stormtroopers, sorry unsullied).

Why send the unsullied army to naath where they will all die from poisoning pretty soon after arriving?

When all the houses were represented for the vote on who should be king or queen, no-one thought the targaryen house I.e. should have a vote?

Unsullied are that stupid to believe the nights watch still exists / is relevant after the night King was killed. After all the wall was created to stop another long night happening after the night King was first created.

We had two seasons of arya training with tye faceless man order and she doesn't use her abilities to kill either cercei or dany. What a letdown.

What happen to the dorne woman cercei imprisoned in the red kepp and said she'd keep alive till she died of old age as she murdered cercei's daughter?

Drogon burning the throne was utter shite, as was Jon not being killed by grey worm instantly for murdering dany.

I could go on but I won't. Very rushed final season and some awful ends to character arcs. It had a happy ending it didn't deserve, the wheel wasn't broken in the end.

Though personally I thought it would have been pretty cool if Drogon had flown off with danys body, headed north. Found the children of the forest. They do their magic on danys body, danys body turns white, she opens her eyes, they are blue. She's become the night queen.

    Fade to black, the end.

When a dragon loses it's rider it returns to the place it was born.

Not that they ever explained it in the series.
  • That night queen idea is straight Hollywood.

Fuck it, I'd be on board that hype train.

  • That was an ending I found very satisfying. The Starks won the game of thrones! 2.5 heads of state (the king beyond the wall is the. 5).

And of course it makes sense for Bran to be King, he can time travel, go into others bodys and is of a personality type he wont go mad or take advantage of his position.

I thought they would go all grimdark with Dany (Actually the only thing that grated was how they actually started calling her that) would end up as a tyrant queen and find more dragon eggs.

I see its imperfections but cannot understand all the bellyaching. Its fine to give out about what was but, tell us what did you want?
Episodes teasing out dragon intelligence, roll call of the surviving dothraki (despite the darkness of that episode many were clearly seen pegging it back to winterfell), subtitles naming which inn en-route to kings land they were at or subtitles with "6 months later." etc...

Its hardly like lost (is there a thread for that ending? Would be nice to compare).

Howdy, Stranger!
