I will also be commencing this on return from vacation, having not touched it before now. So KO Sunday eve on PS3 for me. Can we all use Yuria at the same time?? (or is she xbox only anyway?) Does dawning startfm from the get go? Looking forward room something new to get my teeth into, but fearing the "it's not Souls" feeling
  • Get the 360 version. POW.

    EDIT: Aww, nevermind me.
  • Ok, so I've played a little bit and made my pawn and just fought the hydra. Combat seems a bit janky and the textures aren't great (even after installing the texture pack) but climbing on monsters is a thrill.

The character creation on this is absolutely brilliant. Much better than anything else I've come across. It also looks like there's going to be a vast array of clothing options, which is great because I love hats.
  • This is fun. Hard not to find the combat too loose after Dark Souls, but it's still enjoyable enough in its own way.

I've had Churro and Yuria with me so far, but I think I'm going to drop them. Meteors raining from the sky is all well and good but it feels like they're ruining the experience somewhat.

When/Where can I craft some gear?

Yeah, the super spells ruin it a bit early doors. Look for pawns at your level, at least you'll be able to see what's going on.

You craft stuff at the next proper town.

Yuria only know buffs and healing/curing spells. Nothing offensive. That's why she's great back-up - cause she doesn't interfere with your combat.

If you've only just hired her, she may be a little over-leveled for ya though.

Also, anytime you need an assist etc, just keep stabbing your d-pad left or right, and the pawn will do whatever they're programmed to do.
  • Orly? Must have been Churro (Nick's pawn, right?) bringing the carnage then.

It was all a bit silly. My pawn is a mage as well so magic effects were everywhere all the time.

An ideal party is a mix & match of the available classes.
  • Yay Churro! Still getting some action!
  • I miss Churro I'm gonna pick this up.
  • I've bought this, didn't get it originally and the full game plus DLC for under 20 quid seemed too much of a bargain to resist.

Try to forget about the Dark Souls combat system. If you come straight to this from that you'll not be very impressed.
  • What is it with this game? All the quests near the starting area seem beyond my level? Am I expected to grind already?
I've summoned 2 high level pawns, yet I still seem to be getting my arse kicked.

  • It hasn't felt like any grinding is needed to me, but you have to pick your targets wisely - It seems easy to wander off and fight things that are going to be very hard to kill at an early stage.

I'm loving this so far. I've recruited Chalice's pawn and just had an amazing time fighting an ogre in the bowels of the Grand Soren. There's nothing like a game that gives you the tools to create epic stories of your own and this seems to have it in spades. Wonderful stuff so far.

Where can I forge my own equipment? I've been to Grand Soren and found a Smithy but couldn't seem to do it there.
  • Oh, I can't use as normal sword if I'm a warrior? Well that's pretty fucking stupid.
  • Haven't played yet, what's the most fun starting class?

You don't forge weapons. You find them as loot or purchase them, then upgrade them with materials you find on your travels.
  • Is that it? How disappointing. :(

I might just keep using Yuria. As OP as she is for my level, there's nothing like constant buffs when you're climbing about on an ogre's back.

How does retaining skills work? Will I keep all my Fighter skills if I transfer to a Mage Knight?
  • Yeah, but not all of them crossover. I'm sure there is some kind of symbol or something next to the ones that do.

Think Dark Souls, not Monster Hunter.

In other news i just hit Level 100. Woop!
  • Is that maxed out?

Yeah, I don't have any gripes with not being able to make my own equipment. I'd just assumed that you could craft stuff "properly" given the seemingly huge amount of crafting items in game and a few references people had made. Oh well.

This game has some massive issues - the pop up is some of the worst I've seen in any game ever - but there's so much right in terms of the combat, particularly when facing larger foes. The first time seeing your pawn sprint up a rock and launch into the air before slamming her twin daggers into a cyclops' eye is a special moment.

i am, my pawn is only level 5 though.
Liddleman's and someone else's pawns are in their 40s and 50s, not stopping me from getting my arse whooped though.

Nah, i believe it goes to 200.

It does have technical issues for sure. But i love the freedom that it allows - like throwing NPC's off rooftops. lol!
  • Just started Dark Arisen on PS3. Real combat shock coming straight out of Dark Souls, but I can see that this should be a lot of fun. Hard as nails though! Managed to get myself killed three times in a couple of hours, and those were just the first few quests.

Man it's annoying how much progress you can lose by dying.  It doesn't exactly incentivise heading off to the wilderness if you can kill loads of stuff, get loads of loot, and then lose it all by dying.  Particularly when heading back to down is a long walk (or you teleport and have an equally long walk back to where you were... actually I guess I could have used my savey location thing, sigh...)

I also found a key i have no idea what it unlocks, which is kinda intriguing.  But i'm now demoralised!
  • Yeah, it's a bitch. Has me saving more often than I find enjoyable, tbh.

Is that via the main menu (start/continue)?

I've also not quite worked out the difference between "Retry" and "Retry from checkpoint".  Where is the first retry from if not a checkpoint??
  • Yeah, press Start then Save & Continue. I'm a little confused by the Retry options too; another reason I'm saving quite frequently.

The game has got some really enjoyable stuff to it, and when the combat is flowing well it's superb, but the world feels uninspired and lacks the allure of Lordran.
