Returnal - on PC now
  • Got to level three. The second boss is very doable if you have the resurrection parasite, a large health and an astronaut.

And it all went very badly wrong quite quickly.  Still, definitely faster progress than before. Who knows, I may actually finish this one day...

IMO, you’ve dealt with the hardest stuff the game has to throw at you now. You’ll be fine and I believe in you.

@tin_robot I absolutely hated getting to the boss on Biome 6.

Thinking I must have gotten lucky in 6, tbh. Managed to get through it without any real blockages, although there were deffo some tense fights. Will need to have another look, I think.

Nice work Crayon - 2nd boss a roadblock for a lot of people. You did good.

Started playing this again after a break to finish RE Village before it's trade-in value plummeted.

Alas, the break hasn't been kind and I've lost my mojo.  Spent a hour or so last night and I couldn't get past the first couple of doors!

The allure of waking up the dead astronauts is also proving too much; every time I see one (which is a lot more regularly than I remember) I activate them and then get smashed-in by some mega powerful alien!
  • Some runs can be brutal - sure you will rediscover your mojo soon enough.

I think it’s the purple energy that does it.
  • It's the red, arrow-like homing projectiles.
  • Luckily the malfunctions I got weren't life threatening / run ending.  Can't pick up another weapon?  Pfft.  I have a high-powered Hollowseeker already.  The other one was really high alt-fire cooldown.  Needed to melee kill enemies to get rid of it... but I was scared of losing health just before boss and so just killed everything from far.  Worked out ok in the end.

You're basically saying that you're so good you've never had to unload a whole clip/mag in a fight.  Or you're so bad you die after firing just a few shots... :)

    /// URGENT MESSAGE

    /// SOURCE: HELIOS

I feel like I'm losing my mind all over again. I have ascended, returned, failed and fought on. I have lived my life. But I can feel something inside, calling me back. Will there ever be peace? Or, am I destined to spend the rest of eternity here on Atropos? 4 words, running round my head.

Those 4 words, gnawing and digging.

    4 words like a song...

Welcome, Ladies and Gents to The Returnal Weekly Bear and Badger Forum Challenge NOT sponsored by Housemarque.

What is it? How do you win? Well, read on.

    /// INTRODUCTION AND BASIC RULES

So, here is how it will work.

In Returnal there is sth called Simulation Mode which has DAILY CHALLENGES. These change every 24 hours and have a preset set of weapons and modifiers for a run through a preset biome. Select that, shoot monsters with the PEW PEW and get a SCORE!

    Just, please note:

When you LEAVE the biome, the run is OVER - it is NOT a full multi-biome run, so BE CAREFUL.

Every week I will post TWO DAYS (e.g. wednesday and friday). Those two days are the days that will count towards The Returnal Weekly Bear and Badger Forum Challenge NOT sponsored by Housemarque. When you finish your run on one (or both) of these days, post your score in this thread. The highest score (not cumulative - just your hightest score from either run gets considered) from a forumite is the WINNER for that week. Then, next week, 2 more days are picked.

/// HOW TO GET A BIG SCORE

In SIMULATION MODE your job is to score points in a single biome. The best way to score points is to INCREASE YOUR MULTIPLIER. How does this all work?

Well, the following things mean MORE POINTS:

    - killing baddies
    - discovering areas and getting loot, keys etc.
    - showing skills (this means hitting weak points, getting high adrenaline, not dying etc)
    - doing it quickly (speed is not essential but the longer you take...)

The following things mean FEWER POINTS:

    - taking damage and losing adrenaline
    - getting rekt to death
    - missing locations and secrets

/// REASONS TO TAKE PART IN [REDCATED EVENT NOT SPONSORED BY HOUSEMARQUE]

    The reasons are simple:

    1. Pew pew pew pew pew
    2. The winner each week will be declared The PewMaster, and each month i'll look at the PewMasters and pick a PewMaster General. The pewMaster General will be immortalised (for a month) in the thread title (space permitting).

/// HOW TO TAKE PART IN [REDACTED]

After clearing the first biome you should be able to take part, however it's possible that certain biome challenges will not be unlocked until you've done those biomes. That's another reason for having 2 daily challenges count towards the weekly challenge.

In order to join - go to your ship and look at the TERMINAL next to the GIANT HOLE that you CLIMB OUT OF to start a run. That's the terminal that gives you access to simulation mode. Every day, it will have a new challenge. Just do that.

When you select that terminal you will see:

    LEFT SIDE

    - Challenge location (the biome where the daily challenge is set)
    - Challenge modifiers (there will be multiple buffs and debuffs added to your character for this run)

    MIDDLE

    - Weapon (the weapon for the challenge is preset)
    - Weapon Traits (the traits are also preset)

    RIGHT SIDE

    - Leaderboards (scores are displayed here)
    - Timer (it shows how long remains on the dailyt challenge until it is replaced by a new one)
    - Launch challenge button (press this to start. Completing the challenge gives 5 ether!)

So yeah, just press that button and do the challenge. Then, when you're done, post you score up in here.

/// QUESTIONS THAT WILL PRESUMABLY BE FREQUENTLY ASKED BY FLESHBAGS

    Question The First:
I suspect [dodgy forumite] will cheat and lie about their score. Why don't we have to post screenshots?

I think scores from friends may be visible (will need to check this), but even if not I prefer honour rules. I'd ask that you SCREENSHOT a score you plan to submit (in case of accusations of deceit) but I'm not going to ask for screenshots to be posted. They're faff and an obstacle to participation.

    Question The Second:
Isn't it unfair that we do 2 runs per week? Maybe one challenge will naturally give a much higher score than another?

This is mainly a practical consideration. People have lives and jobs so it's possible they miss a run in a week or they don't see the thread update on time. So, 2 days per week, picked randomly. If people would prefer one of those days to be a weekend, let me know and i'll do a one weekday / one weekend system. This is flexible and can be changed depending on what is easier for people.

As for the unfair part re. score difference. Maybe? But if you're worried about that, do both. Or get over it. Either works.

Question Three: Question With A Vengence?
Why don't we have a running league system with points and...?

I'm gonna stop you right there, elf. The reason we're not going that is simple - it's too much fucking hassle and math. Also, it discourages people from joining in if they "arrive late" as they would have fallen behind. Returnal is all about starting from scratch, so every week and every month we do exactly the same. We all return to zero

    /// FINAL MESSAGE

    PEW PEW
  • I'll try and take part.

One suggestion, though. Rather than comparing scores, which really can vary massively between challenges, you could track global leaderboard positions.

Good shout - can see who has the highest leaderboard position across the 2 days. Smart boy. I’ll have a good think about that and maybe tinker with the post a bit later.

I’m in. We need someone to prop up the bottom of the table.
  • Reminder to peeps that this starts tomorrow (my tomorrow, as of this moment).

Been thinking more about using leaderboard position vs score. One issue I see is time - it’s likely I’ll be doing runs earlier than peeps here due to time zone difference. That would naturally inflate my position in the leaderboard- same would go for Shabby and anyone else who lives in a more easterly location.

Will need to see if leaderboard positions are viewable after the day, for an accurate final position.

So, for this week I’ll use score, but I also ask that people post leaderboard position with their score just so I can see which one is best for future weeks.
  • If you’re up for taking part, give the pew pew a go and submit your scores, starting from today.

This is a weekly thing and there’s no league - so if you miss or skip weeks, then it’s no biggie. Just a bit of fun.
