Can't decide whether I made the right decision choosing Classic mode rather than Newcomer. I mean I've played strategy games before and the whole perma-death thing is the whole point, right?

  • I've gone classic and have never played a FE before but I've gone normal but only done first 3 levels and lost no one yet !

  • I tried hard and classic.

I'm not smart enough for this difficulty.  Think I'm on cheaper 3 or 4 and have had to restart each mission multiple times.

There haven't been any cheap deaths, very punishing on lazy tactics, so I can't stay mad at it.  Learning, slowly.

Had my first deaths this morning. Instant soft reset. That's the way to play, right?
  • Don't think any game is meant to be played by resetting!!

I just got this from Game with a nice mini artbook. Not sure when I'll get a chance to play. When I do, it'll be on newcomer as I've never played a Fire Emblem game before, even though I own one already (Path of Radiance).

I've seen it argued that to reset is to cheat, and that you should just suck it up.

No me. I'm in the NO ONE CAN DIE camp.

Got this as a download from Game, had some points on my account, so paid around £31 for it and got the DLC too while its still cheap.

Enjoying it all so far, with the exception of the oohs and aaahs in conversations, think the missus thinks I'm watching 3D porn!

Going with normal/classic as never played before, have reset about half a dozen times so far, but enjoying the learning process that comes with it.
  • I don't reset unless it's going to be game destroyingly bad. About 10 chapters through and I've lost a total of 6. Hard mode actually seems to get a little bit easier in the middle of the game.
  • The point of FE for me has always been about doing it right. No one dies, recruit everyone possible, get all the treasure and steal anything that's stealable. Keep resetting until it all goes to plan. It's less a case of accepting what happens and more a case of setting your own difficulty level by choosing how perfectly you want to do stuff. Otherwise, just getting through the chapters is pretty easy. At least in all the other FEs I've played.
  • Played a little today, only the first couple of fights but I can tell I am going to love this.

Thought I'd be all over the DLC for this, but having played the free map I'm not sure it's worth it, even at the knock-down price.

This is me. But I expect one or two casualties on hard mode. It's inevitable as not everyone can be ranked up sufficiently. I wonder if they have a level like that in this one.

It's on the map, opens up after a chapter or two.
  • I forgot something - that is, maximising XP. First off not using the higher level character it gives you at the beginning at all. And then trying to get lower level characters in as much as possible. And not promoting until level 20 (assuming it's the same here).

It's generally not a good idea to use everyone either. Best to select a varied group and stick with it throughout, adding some of the new recruits as you go along. That's less of an issue in Sacred Stones and this one, from what I've read, as there are opportunties for grinding. Always thought that was against the spirit of the series myself. Especially since there are limited promotion items, so what's the point anyway?
  • This game is consuming my weekend.
"Sometimes it's better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness." ― Terry Pratchett
  • I don't think sticking to a small-ish, strong varied first team is a "must" in this - you can use the reeking box(?) to replay maps an XP-grind for lower level characters so you can have everyone at a decent level, and less soul-crushing deaths. Unless there's a finite number of reeking boxes...

  • I found at the beginning its best to unequip Fredricks weapon, have him and block passage ways while the others do the damage and get the XP.

Haven't used it yet, but heard the DLC maps can be used to grind, I'm busy picking up on the side quests.

Regardless of strategy an unlucky critical from an enemy really pisses me off and has sent me back to the home screen a few times already. But determined to have no deaths.
  • Again, not talking about this one and not sure it's the same as before, but you should be able to avoid risking criticals mostly by using characters with high Luck.

Edit: It's not worth going into a fight with a critical percentage at all unless there's really no other choice.

Probably my lack of experience tbf JonB and while tutorial is ok, the manual is lacking in detail. For example, I had to figure out the weapon compatibility stuff myself, but again that's more my lack of knowledge with this type of game as I'm guessing people would understand the grading system.

I'd left Vaike out on his own and he got mugged, so part bad luck, part bad positioning
