  • I've just bought a £45 add on to my ossc which adds svideo and composite which means I will be able to now hook up my 2600 and my C64!

The OSSC pro still doesn't have a release date yet davy and with Aliexpress selling the original for about £40 I'd jump in!

Edit:Prices have shot back up to £100+ now for some reason. Apologies!

  • I think one thing people underestimate when playing old consoles on new TVs is their size.

How many of us played our Mega Drives on 43" CRTs? Hook one up to a small 15" HDTV (the type found in peoples kitchens these days) and I'm sure it'll look more like it did back in the day.

I remember when I got my first widescreen CRT, it was 32" and I remember the text on Jet Set Radio on DC being visibly more blurry if it was at the edge of the screen compared to the centre. I even called a technician out on the warranty and he explained how the image he's weaker around the edges, kinda like the light from a torch.

  • Very true Retro. I found the introduction of widescreen a real turn off with all that unused real estate on the left and right. Painful to see images stretched out over one too.

The line doubling abilities of the OSSC and Retrotink 5x really do work wonders though with modern TVs, 240p source stuff can look absolutely incredible.

  • Yeah, I think there's plenty of options available these days.

The last stand of CRTs is light gun games.

  • Very true. I'm a bit gutted that my b&o tv has some odd hz rating that means it doesn't work with light guns :(

Picked this up in Taipei. Japanese import called Fighting Legends Pack. It's Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection International and Capcom Fighting Collection in a swanky box.

    IMG-3424.jpg
The back. (Spine on the "wrong" side because Japan, innit.)

    IMG-3425.jpg
The front. Sadly, the white insert isn't art cards or a book, as I assumed, but a cardboard spacer. (More on this later.)

    IMG-3427.jpg
The rear artwork with the legalese wrap around paper out of the way. (Reminds me of the obi/spine card from Japanese Saturn titles. I'll be holding onto that.)

    IMG-3426.jpg
The included carts. The sticker on the front of Capcom Fighting Collection explains that Capcom Arcade Stadium 2nd is getting a physical release in 2023. The cardboard spacer is just there like the N64 Jumper Pak to occupy space until the 'add on' is released further down the line.

Between the two carts, that's 13 different Street Fighters, five Dark Stalkers titles, Pocket Fighter, Puzzle Fighter, Cyberbots, and War Zarl/Red Earth.

If a title or two really grips me, I might treat myself to a Hori Fighting Commander or Fighting Stick Mini, but that'll have to wait until the next paycheque.

That"s very nice. The different artstyle on the cover is a bit of a mismatch but a lovely thing. I have the Hori mini stick. Got it for shmups. Haven't given it a real proper workout but it feels nice for the price as a shmup stick which demands less off a stick. Feels light as the base isn't metal.

  • That box is gorgeous, Swirl. I'm definitely gonna grab the Capcom Fighting Collection (mainly 'cause of my love for the Darkstalkers series), but I'll be waiting for a sale or maybe my next paycheck.

A stick really is a lovely thing to have if you play a lot of fighting games and shmups, but that Hori Fighting Commander is well liked as well. For fighting games I would suggest holding off buying that mini though, ideally you'll want something bigger and more stable. Although that also means more expensive.

The 8Bitdo arcade stick for the Switch and PC is gorgeous and gets a lot of love (not too pricey either), and if you want something a step up - the Hori RAP.V for Switch and PC has a superior PCB, buttons, and stick thanks to those very nice Hayabusa parts. Its size, weight, and non-slip pads mean it'll sit on your lap comfortably and not move an inch, plus there's plenty of room to rest your wrists. Its size also means it's highly moddable, but that's something for later on.
  • Been playing a bit of Sammy's Dolphin Blue on emu recently and I kinda love it despite it absolutely kicking my arse. That mix of land, dolphin-riding above water, and underwater action ain't getting old any time soon. Definitely recommended for Metal Slug fans.

I'll only invest in a stick/specialised pad if something really grips me, otherwise it'll just be a neat collection of retro games to dip in and out of as the mood takes me. My Taiwan apartment isn't huge, so a stick might be a mistake, but I'll have a look at the suggestions. I reckon the Fighting Commander pad might be reasonable at Puyo Puyo and Tetris.

Agreed on the art styles. The box and two game covers are completely different, and the suggested third title to put in later on is different again.

The Hori Switch mini stick I have is wired. And the cable isn't long enough for where I have the Switch set up. I should probably get an extension lead for it and start using it in anger. Played about with the Darius Arcade Collection a bit yesterday using the 8bitDo pad and it's a stunningly good production from M2. But I'm hard wired to play shmups with a stick now so a dpad doesn't do it for me anymore.

Tetris on Switch is unplayable with the joycons. But I can still use a dpad for it so the 8bitdo is OK. Would still prefer a stick though.

  • I have two CRT's in my garage, a 28" 16:9 Sony and a 21" 4:3 Philips. I have a dream that one day I will have the spare room so that I can set up all my old consoles, but I know that won't happen. I am just loathe to put to two TV's to the skip when I know they are in perfect condition.

The 4:3 will be of more value - even with the smaller size the actual display area is similar to a larger 16:9 screen. I have a 21" rotated for shmups and a 25" for normal games. Both 4:3.   I have a small dedicated room which is why I can indulge myself, but I really should look at replacing them with an OSSC. I have a few light gun games but the Wii meets that urge now admirably.

My daughters can't go into the room when the CRTs are running as they can hear a high pitched whine. You get overscan with CRTs too - it's not a real issue with mine but you do get used to the perfectly fitting image that you get now with modern game consoles.

And as much as we like big screens, smaller screens do older consoles a lot of favours. If it comes to it @LtPidgeon I'd just keep the 21" 4:3, especially if it has RGB SCART.

  • I've got an ossc and still have my crt's. It's nice to be able to play on a bigger screen especially when playing couch multiplayer but solo CRT play, especially on my SNES, N64 and 2600 is hard to beat.

Get on that spare room LtPigeon, just take your time doing it. Take both TVs up then just add to it over time, thats how I did it.

I don't get that much time to game anymore but I still quite enjoy just popping in and looking around in mine!

Although it's a dream, I probably wouldn't use them. It's just holding on to memories. I need to let it go.

It's like when I spend ages setting up a new Raspberry Pi build of emulators, I spend more time getting it just the way I want it than actually playing it.

Nothing can recreate the memories we are constantly chasing.

It pleases me that you see it as curated. It's very much my aim. Based around the genres I like or like to collect. Shmups, puzzle games, arcade racers, local MP games and JP oddities are my thing. I'm awful at versus fighters but I like to have a sample of them in my collection.

Everdrive X5 for Megadrive arrived. The seller included a memory card stacked to ROMs. I bought a modified Megadrive 2 off the seller as well with an RGB cable. He even threw in a 6 button controller. Nice.

Just had a quick breeze through the ROMs - Slap Fight, Wardner, Twin Hawk et al. Very nice. It even lets me run SMS games which is a bonus. I need to have a look at the manual as the menus seems to hint at plenty of functionality.

I have a modded MD1 but I thought it worthwhile getting the 2nd one. I still have the Strictly Limited cartridge of Darius that I returned, got the refund for, and then got sent back to me marked as undelivered after several weeks. Sent it tracked/signed for etc. Emailed Strictly back and they are ignoring me. Anyhow I thought it might have worked on the MD2 as I have heard it runs differently on different consoles - tried it and it crashed but only after playing for a while. It crashes straight away on the MD1. I can copy the ROM onto the Everdrive anyhow as it's available online now.

The boxes are all good to near mint to mint. All have manuals, many look unopened.
Game Gear has the usual screen problem so I will have to look at fixing that.
