No matter how many bee related puns you make in this thread, it will not prepare you for the ones in the film.

Gorgeous looking hard sci-fi epic in which almost every frame is like a painted cover of a classic sci-fi novel. Can't wait to see the next one. 10

You’re gonna give it a 12. I enjoyed the first but the second is a step up.

Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo agreed with me that Messi the dog from Anatomy of a Fall should have gotten some kind of special award.

    24. The Iron Claw
Based on a true story drama about a family of wrestlers. I wasn't familiar with any of this advance and got a whiff of impending tragedy from the trailer but good lord, no wonder they talk about a family curse. It's an odd film and I never really got fully into it - partly I think there's something odd about Efron's performance, though not bad and perhaps accurate and partly that the story starts quite slow then suddenly skips chunks of time without being that clear about it. White seems criminally wasted and even without knowing the background, the signposting could not be more obvious so really undercuts dramatic moments. It's solid, strong in a few moments but also feels by the numbers which is a disservice to the family's experiences. [5]

    25. Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle
Story of a Japanese soldier who spent 29 years hiding and fighting in the jungle of a Philippine island after the end of WWII. I always wondered how he couldn't be convinced the war was over but this provides important context of his training in a special unit in the last days of the war with the specific goal to never surrender, to be highly suspicious of propaganda and use guerrilla tactics to disrupt the 'enemy'. Thus every attempt at contact seemed suspicious, even more so once he was the last remaining member of his unit and his isolation meant he could only rely on himself. It's full of details dotted throughout the early and later years with great performances from the core, both young and old Onoda in particular. The skill and drive to survive in such remote circumstances and stay hidden is incredible but also heartbreaking that it took so long for him to recognise he could finally surrender. [8]

Which Aftersun is it? I want to add it to my Trakt watchlist.
  • My wife put on Aftersun the other day because she thought it was a light hearted comedy and would cheer me up after a particularly unpleasant day at work.  Suffice to say it did not gel well with the stuff I'd had to handle that morning, and as such I don't think I can make any kind of assessment of the movie.  At the end I just got up and walked out of the room in silence...

Talk To Me Good idea for a horror flick and it lasts most of its runtime before the wheels come off a bit. Some good creepy moments, splendid makeup and a young cast that doesn't annoy - an achievement in itself.

I thought it was pretty much nonsense and made no effort to explain why anyone thought what they were doing was fun. I guess it could be a metaphor for the generation gap or something.
