    I don't think I've seen that one.

I didn't see that page turn coming either
  • Some fantastic film fest movies! Not a lot of hits this year...

    41. FFFA: One-Percenter
One for martial arts action fans to check out but with the caveat that it does not live up to the heights that it lays out at the start. Kind of sets itself up for a fall really even though it does some cool stuff I'd never seen before
    [4]

    42. FFFA: Hood Witch
Ooft I really didn't like this. The setup is neat but then it's just all over the place. Is she a witch? Is she not? Why is there no tension? Why does it kick off like it does? It doesn't make sense. Just really shit.
    [2]

    43. FFFA: Vincent Must Die
This is such a neat setup but it just doesn't do anything with it and it goes too long and I just didn't end up caring. So many set pieces just not executed as well as they could have been
    [3]

    44. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Was lucky enough to be in the audience of the world premiere. I think once you realise it isn't Fury Road and once you settle into its more digital look and once you realise the title sets your expectations you'll realise it's great and does some really bold and interesting and fun and funny stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

  • If you liked Sakaguchi in One-Percenter (I’ve not seen it yet), then Versus (2000) is a no-brainer as one of the greatest gonzo fight films ever made. Recent form Re:Born (2016) has more of the wibbly-arm-and-shoulder “zero range combat” stuff in and huge amounts of bullet-dodging “how many reasons can we have for people to come at him with knives instead of using their guns”. All the action bits are on YouTube anyway:
  • I think you'll dig this new one, it has some cool stuff in it. It's just weird that it opens the film by having him talk at length about how modern action films use quick cuts and editing to make things seem more exciting instead of doing "real fighting" and you can't see anything and blah blah blah but then it literally spends the rest of the film using those techniques. Was weird

I'd be keen to see more of his stuff though..I should have known he'd have more out there
  • 45. FFFA: Cannibal Mukbang
Not as gruey as the trailer suggests with it being more of a low budget, meet-cute romance film with a lightweight Bones and All angle to it. The acting is as wobbly as the sound mix, the director/cinematographer apparently hasn't heard of anything but a close-up but I found this to be charming and the best of the festival stuff I saw. Not a high bar though...
    [7]

    46. FFFA: The Deep Dark
If you want to know how to make a boring and tensionless monster movie set in a mine then check this out. I thought it was 40mins longer than the runtime actually was. It tries to be a The Mummy, or Sphere or Deep Rising but it fails to create interesting characters or utilise the setting to any degree. Part of me liked that the monster was so poorly shot you that you could see how wibbly wobbly it was. Also, don't suggest The Old Gods style horror and then don't do anything with it.

Nice, cheers - I’ll definitely check it out when it hits the streaming.
IMHO Sakaguchi is a pretty legit martial artist these days, but in an odd niche where he’s in it for the art/form and it’s not particularly practical. Eg Probably wouldn’t last long in a MMA ring. The wibbly wobbly arms thing is particularly daft in the face off at the end of Re:Born, where the 2 fighters using the same style are trying to size each other up. Bruce did the “bridging the gap” stuff better.

Versus is an absolute blinder of a film - up there with the bonkers stuff that was coming out of Japan in the late 90s/early 2000s like Wild Zero: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_Zero
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versus_(2000_film)
  • Oh man, I caught Wild Zero on late night tv back in the day and loved it. Haven't seen it for years and years though

Updated my list. I'm closing in on 100 films and have breached the 50 shorts mark. Any suggestions on what I should watch for film 100?
Kinda ignored movies last year but I’m gonna try to do 50 this year.

  • Sherlock Jr?

It came out in April 1924 so it's just turned 100 years old, which feels appropriate for a 100th movie. Watching movies is also fairly central to the plot.  It's a Buster Keaton classic, has a classic car chase and is only 45 minutes long so if you hate it you can always re-classify it as a short and watch something else.

    OK, fine. How’s this?

ERE, what you wrote is, obviously, wildly inappropriate. I don’t know to what degree it was intended as ill advised joke, or to what degree you imagined it was righteous anger, but it really doesn’t matter. There's a line, and you crossed it.

To illustrate that fact, I'll tell you about my response to your post. Keep in mind that for the most part this place is my sanctuary. I come in here to escape from the not insignificant stresses of my regular life, to talk to people I like about stuff of debatable consequence and generally release some pressure.

This was particularly relevant as I logged in over my cornflakes this morning, as yesterday I was called out of work to speak to a psychiatrist who told me one of my loved ones had attempted to throw themselves in front of a train. Physically they’re fine, and no I don’t want to talk about it right now. Your post was about as triggering as it's possible to be.

I was really fucking angry with you for ruining my one moment of respite. But… I was also aware you had no idea that's what you were doing. So, selfishly perhaps, I decided that actually, the best thing to do was to try and restore this space to what I perceived as its function. So I thought quite hard about a genuine recommendation. Something helpful, and nice – and as I did so, some of why I was here returned. Hell I even allowed myself a brief glimmer of satisfaction at what I thought was a nice idea.

Unfortunately doing so appears to have been seen by Paul as a tacit endorsement, despite the fact that he's more than capable of fighting his own battles. So I'm forced to go back to that bit of my brain, and sit here tearful and angry, to point out the breathtakingly obvious statement that telling people to kill themselves is wrong.

    So there you have it.

Shit you post on the internet is read by many people, not just the ones you're aiming it at. You have no idea what any of them are going through, and as such it's generally best to, you know, stick to the forum rule.

With that, I'm out for a bit. Not a flounce, but I don’t really have the headspace for this right now.

    Movies, folks, movies

  • Very well written and very well said Tin.
Let's all be nice to each other here yea?

For the record I'd second Sherlock Jr as it's a mini masterpiece.

    Play nice folks.

    Sorry for your troubles @tin_robot.

We should all try and remember everyone is fighting their own battles. So try not to add to them.

First off, sincere apologies that I’ve exacerbated what you’re going through Tin.

From my point of view I’ve been getting hassled by Paul for no reason for about a week now in what seems like deliberate joy theft behaviour (ERE is enjoying posting in the film threads at the moment so how I can spoil that?).
    * Grey rocking Paul hasn’t worked because third-parties have leapt in and responded to his posts, validating his behaviour, even though I haven’t, keeping the plate spinning on and on even though I haven’t actually replied to Paul.
    * Switching to being nasty to Paul to get him to fuck off and go away hasn’t worked either because it bothers other people.

I don’t want to leave the forum over this because then that’s just successful joy theft but at the same time I can’t keep letting my spare time get hijacked by someone trying to get under my skin for no reason.

I’m just not gonna communicate at all with Paul at this point. I don’t want to be communicated with by Paul and I don’t want third-parties jumping into any attempt by Paul to communicate with me.

Joy theft? I disagreed with your review and the points you raised. Took the piss a bit. I didn't go out of my way to target you, I'd have took the piss out of anyone for talking about childhood indoctrination and manipulation in a film review. You posted something, I responded to it. That's how a forum works. You might not like what I had to say but it wasn't a personal attack or abusive.

Since then you've been an OTT fanny about it. You tried to attribute my posts to me dealing with stuff going on in my personal life. Presumably my son going through cancer treatment? I can assure you it's got absolutely nothing to do with that, and everything to do with the points you made in your review. I'd appreciate it if my personal life was not used to detract from the actual points I made, which you still haven't even addressed.

Then last night you're telling me to jump off a bridge over a tame as fuck joke about it? Seriously? Over a disagreement over a film review? You're better than that, surely. I'm not even arsed at all that you're calling me a cunt or whatever over it but I don't see any reason to bring personal stuff into it or to recommend that I kill myself. Poor form

Ida Polish film about a novice nun about to take her vows who goes on a mini road trip with her last surviving relative (a rather boozy lady who likes the company of men) to find out about how her parents died during the second world war. To say much more is to spoil.

It's a beautifully shot film in black and white and in 4:3 aspect ratio which is used to get the most of shots with people in them. It looks gorgeous from its stylishly shot externals to the shabby internals. Despite the subject matter there is some humour to be found here. It's a marvellous film and I recommend it.  On BFI.
